Lady Pirates Close Regular Season with Win at Howard

Washington, D.C. – The Hampton Lady Pirates won their regular season finale on Thursday, defeating Howard 60-54 at Burr Gymnasium. 

The Lady Pirates (22-6, 15-1 MEAC), the regular-season MEAC champions, close out the regular season on a 10-game winning streak. Senior forward Quanneisha Perry led Hampton with 17 points and 10 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season, while junior guard Jericka Jenkins added 16 points, nine assists and three steals.

Junior forward Melanie Warner scored 14 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, while junior guard Choicetta McMillian added 11 points.

Senior guard Laura Lewis added nine rebounds.

The Lady Pirates opened the game on a 10-2 lead, from a Warner free throw in the first half. Howard responded with an 18-10 run to tie the game at 20-20 in the half after Saadia Doyle converted a 3-point play.

Hampton then scored six unanswered points to kick off a 12-6 run to end the half. The Lady Pirates took a 32-26 lead into the half. 

Howard outscored the Lady Pirates 7-4 to open the second half, pulling to within three on a 3-pointer from Cheyenne Curley-Payne to cut Hampton’s lead to 36-33. Doyle hit a free throw with to cut the lead to 36-34.

The Lady Pirates responded with an 11-2 run to take a 50-38 lead with a McMillian trey. Doyle hit a pair of free throws to pull Howard within six, 54-48, but that was as close as the Lady Bison would get. 

Howard (13-17, 9-7 MEAC) shot 36.5 percent (19-for-52) from the floor and turned the ball over 17 times. Doyle led the Lady Bison with 20 points on 6-for-12 shooting and nine rebounds, while Curley-Payne added 17 points.

Morton Leads UMES to 55-49 Win over Delaware State in Home Finale

Princess Anne, Md. - Casey Morton led a group of three players in double figures with 18 points on 6-for-9 shooting, adding six rebounds and four assists, as Maryland Eastern Shore defeated Delaware State, 55-49, on Senior Night at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center Thursday.

The win for UMES (10-18, 7-8 MEAC) is the Lady Hawks' second consecutive and moved their home mark to 9-5.

The loss for Delaware State (9-19, 5-11) is its second straight. 

The Lady Hawks never trailed, jumping out to a 22-6 lead in the first half and cruising to victory.

Morton, the lone senior on this year's team, who was named to the All-MEAC Second Team earlier in the day, also made 6-of her 11 free throws and grabbed two steals to pace UMES. Chelsea Sanders scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds, while Adobi Agbasi  finished with 10 points and six rebounds.

Kianna Conner led Delaware State with 17 points and Crystal Pitt chipped in with 10 for the Lady Hornets.

Delaware State made a 12-6 run to close the half down, 29-18.

Conner opened the second half with a layup to bring the deficit under double digits but Sanders knocked down a trey three minutes later, helping the Lady Hawks begin to build the lead again. 

Morton hit a pair from the line to extend the advantage to 42-26 with less than nine minutes to play and The Lady Hornets never mounted a serious threat for the rest of the night.

SC State Women’s Basketball Defeats North Carolina Central in Regular Season Finale

Durham, N.C.—The SC State women’s basketball closed out its 2010-11 regular season with a 47-41 win over North Carolina Central. The non-conference matchup was contested at the McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium on the campus of North Carolina Central. 

Sophomore Tiara Knotts led three SC State players in double-figures with 12.  Fannie Goodwin scored 11 points while Whitney Wiley contributed 10 points in the victory.  Goodwin had an all-around game as she led the team in rebounds with eight while also contributing two blocks with two steals.  Knotts pulled in six rebounds with six assists and four steals as the Lady Bulldogs won its fourth straight contest.

North Carolina Central was led by Shanise Blanks with 12 points. Chasidy Williams recorded a double-double, 11 points-11 rebounds while Jori Nwachukwu contributed seven points and 11 rebounds in the loss.

With the victory, SC State finished the 2010-11 regular season with an 11-16 overall record and 6-10 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).  The loss put North Carolina Central at 2-25

The Lady Eagles came close to potential victory in the second-half, with a layup by Chasidy Williams snapping the double-digit lead to nine.  With a small 4-0 run created by four made free throws from Williams and senior Jori Nwachukwu, the Lady Eagles hit at a 3-point deficit, 42-39.

Goodwin netted a layup to extend the lead to five with a score of 44-39. Nwachukwu, who was 3-for-4 from the free-throw line, sank one free-throw to bring the margin to four, 44-40.

For three minutes of play both teams went silent, until Williams scored a free- bringing the margin back to three with a score of 44-41. 

But with 40 seconds left on the clock, Tiara Knotts netted a three-point basket to seal the 47-41 victory.

Florida A&M Defeats Bethune-Cookman, 68, 59

Daytona Beach, Fla. – The Florida A&M Lady Rattlers outrebounded the  Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats 40-32,and B-CU gave up 19 turnovers. The result was a 68-59 setback that extended the losing streak to FAMU to 14 straight dating back to 2004.

Shekeira Copeland came off the bench to score 19 while Qiana Donald and Tameka McKelton scored 13 each as FAMU (15-14 overall, 9-7) concluded its regular season.

Bethune-Cookman (13-14,5-10) wraps up its season Saturday against Maryland Eastern Shore in Durham, N.C.

Spoiled in the defeat was an effort from Cleniece Roberts, who double-doubled with 26 points and 11 rebounds. She made her first nine shots.

After exchanging the lead five times in the opening half, B-CU took a 35-34 lead on a Roberts lay-up, but FAMU scored the next six points for a 40-35 lead. B-CU cut it back to 40-39, but FAMU quickly built its lead back up to seven at 46-39.

B-CU cut the deficit down to two twice, the last when Roberts’ jumper made it 52-50, but that’s as close as it got.

Jasmine Elum scored 15 for B-CU, while Sarah Bolden had eight rebounds.

North Carolina A&T's Fast Pace Leads to 91-63 Win Over Norfolk State

NORFOLK, Va. – North Carolina A&T’s high-octane offense was too much for the Norfolk State in a 91-63 loss Thursday night at Joseph Echols Hall on Senior Night.

The Aggies shot better than 50 percent for the game and continuously pushed the pace of the game in the last regular season game for both teams. NSU fell to 9-18 overall, 2-14 in the MEAC with the loss, while  North Carolina A&T improved to 15-13, 10-6.

Freshman Rae Corbo had 13 points to lead NSU, which hit 35.7 percent for the game, including just 29.4 percent in the first half. Sophomores Marian Brooks and Batavia Owens added nine and eight points, respectively, and Brooks also led the Spartans with six boards.

Tracy King and Jaquayla Berry led for the Lady Aggies with 25 and 23 points, respectively, on a combined 17-of-23 shooting. King completed a double-double with 11 points and added two steals, two assists and two blocks. Nikia Gorham also posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards, and Mikala Scott joined them in the scoring column with 12.

The Aggies held a sizeable advantage on the boards, 44-31, but committed 22 turnovers to just 16 for the Spartans. A&T hit 52.4 percent for the game, including an 8-of-16 mark from long range. The Aggies also sank 17-of-21 free throws on the night.
