Castro Stays Hot At Plate As UMEAC Overtakes North Carolina A&T
SAVANNAH, Ga. - Maryland Eastern Shore has found a solid and consistent hitter in Charlise Castro and Saturday was no different as the freshman catcher smacked two home runs to lead the Lady Hawks, 5-4, over North Carolina A&T y at Savannah State's Paulson Softball Complex.
Castro, who hit .750 with two homers in Friday's doubleheader against SSU, followed up with another 3-for-4 day with two dingers, three runs and three RBI against the Lady Aggies (5-16).
Sophomore Jasmine James went 2-for-4 on the day with two RBI while freshman Amber Corrigan went 2-for-4 with one run for UMES (4-22).
Corrigan also earned her second win of the season from the mound as she gave up four runs (three earned) on five hits with three strikeouts in 7.0 innings pitched.
In the top of the first inning, Corrigan and Castro each hit singles and then scored on a double from James to give the Lady Hawks a 2-0 lead.
The third inning started with a bang as Castro smacked her first home run of the day to give UMES a 3-0 advantage before N.C. A&T received a two RBI double from Ryanne Hill in the bottom of the frame to make things 3-2.
The next three innings were quiet for both sides as the two teams combined for one total hit.
Castro gave UMES a 5-2 advantage in the top of the seventh with her one-out, two RBI homer.
The Lady Aggies kept things interesting in their half of the frame as they scored two more runs on a double from Hope Fletcher to come within one at 5-4. The Lady Hawks came through in the end as Tiffany Macklin struck out and Hill grounded out to Corrigan to give UMES the win.
Lauren Clement led N.C. A&T as she went 2-for-3 on the day with one run scored while Fletcher was 1-for-2 with two RBI and one run and Hill went 1-for-4 with two RBI. All three posted doubles for the Lady Aggies.

Reid's Hot Bat Leads Hornets Past Raiders, Bears
Dover, Del. (Mar. 26, 2011) --- Jordan Reid was 7-for-8 with six runs scored to lead Delaware State to victories over Colgate and Morgan State in the Sean Savage Memorial Tournament at the DSU softball complex today. The Hornets have won their last 10 games to improve to 16-8 this season.
DSU defeated Colgate 4-2 before posting a 10-4 victory over Morgan State.
In the Colgate contest, Reid was 3-for-4, including a double. She scored three runs and also stole a base.
Colgate opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning. The Hornets answered with two runs in the bottom of the first to tie the game. Reid led off the inning with a single and later scored on a single by Casey Beighly. Two batters later, Andrea Waters singled in Rachel Carroll tied the score.
Reid singled and stole second before Carroll drove her home with a single to give the Hornets a 3-2 lead in the second inning.
The Hornets added an insurance run in the fourth. Reid doubled to lead off the inning and scored in a Beighly single.
Freshman Ashlyn Campbell (6-2) allowed five hits and two unearned runs, while striking out four to get the victory for the Hornets.
In the Morgan State contest, Reid was 4-for-4 with a double, two stolen bases and three runs scored. Beighly had three hits and a RBI, while Waters, Stephanie Martello and Ashley Davis collected two hits each for the Hornets.
Morgan State led three runs before DSU scored four runs in the third to regain the lead. Beighly and Martello had run-scoring hits in the inning.
The Hornets stretched their lead to 10-3 with five runs in the fifth. Waters and Sherelle Sheppard had run-scoring doubles, while Davis and Reid singled in runs in the inning.
Reid improved her average to a team-best .493 (35-for-71) for the season. She also leads the Hornets with 35 hits and 13 stolen bases (14 attempts).
