MEAC Announces Weekly Tennis Honors

NORFOLK, V.A. - Norfolk State’s Arsenio Culver and Howard’s Michelle Brown were chosen as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tennis Athletes of the Week, the conference announced on Friday. Maryland Eastern Shore’s Arshell Jackson and Malcolm Johnson received Rookie of the Week accolades, respectively.

Culver (Jr., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) finished 4-0 for the week in matches against James Madison and Christopher Newport. Culver defeated Greg Vladimirsky of JMU 6-2, 6-1 at the number one singles position and followed his performance with an 8-5 win in doubles action. Against Christopher Newport, he topped Eric Shulman in two sets 6-2, 6-2 also winning in doubles 8-2.

Brown (Jr.,Los Angeles, California) was 3-0 last week with a singles victory over Coppin State’s Courtnay Clarke (6-0, 6-0) and in doubles against Lauretta Mukam and Jennifer Mitchell (8-0).

Jackson (Fr., Easton, Maryland) aided the Lady Hawks to a 7-0 victory over Coppin State winning at the number three singles position against Hafsatu Kamaru (6-0, 6-0). In doubles action, Jackson and teammate Brittany Coppock defeated Lauretta Mukan and Courtnay Clarke (8-4).

Johnson (Fr., Silver Spring, Maryland) defeated Casey Pleasants of Coppin State in the number five singles position (6-0, 6-0) aiding the Hawks to a 5-2 overall victory.

Other Top Performances:

Christopher Brown (How) defeated Coppin State’s Jeffery James (7-5, 6-2) at the number one singles position. 

Brooke Hawthorne (How) topped Brittany Wagner of Coppin State in singles action.

Solana McMillian (UMES) finished 2-0 (6-0, 6-1) against Lauretta Mukam in the number one singles position.

Richard Warren (UMES) went 1-1 in singles action against Coppin State (6-0, 6-0) and Virginia State (1-6, 0-6).
