GREENSBORO, N.C., March 20, 2011 - Maryland Eastern Shore defeated Morgan State 4-0 en route to their fifth Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Bowling Championship title on Sunday afternoon at the Gate City Lanes in Greensboro, North Carolina.
No.6 Morgan State defeated the defending MEAC Champion Delaware State Lady Hornets in the semifinal match to advance to the matchup against Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). In the semifinal, Morgan State and Delaware State alternated victories in Baker matches but the Lady Bears rallied to win 4-2 and earn their place in the final.
During the finale, UMES dominated Morgan State sweeping the Lady Bears 4-0 to win their first title since 2008. Morgan State, who was down 0-1 after the first game, attempted a rally in game two but came up short falling 157-161. UMES would dominate the next two games with scores of 170-138 and 187-134. Morgan State's Danielle Hale who totaled a pinfall of 724 and averaged a 181 led the Lady Bears throughout the tournament.
Maryland Eastern Shore junior Paula Vilas earned Outstanding Tournament Performer honors."It feels amazing, I did not expect this award," stated Vilas, "When they called my name I was in shock, but I appreciate the honor."
Vilas aided her team throughout the tournament and bowled a high of 193 against Norfolk State during the qualifying rounds.
UMES Head Coach Sharon Brummell was named the Outstanding Coach for the fifth time in her career. "This fifth championship was very special for me because of our three seniors (Frahm, Perez and Rodriguez). This was their last MEAC Bowling Championship. They were a part of the 2008 National Championship team and they really wanted to go out with a win and they were able to achieve that."
When asked about the winning formula for the match Brummell stated: "What took us over was the fact that we were able to make our spares". I constantly drive into the young ladies that we have to make spares and it proved to be worth it today".
Joining Vilas on the All-Tournament Team is teammate Maria Rodriguez, Delaware State's Jazmyne Hefflefinger and Devin Revels and Keisheena Waldon of Morgan State complete the team.
The MEAC Bowling Championship finale will air in a tape-delayed format on Monday, March 28 at 7 p.m. on ESPNU.
