MEAC Announces Its Bowling All-Conference Honors

Maryland Eastern Shore's Maria Rodriguez was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Bowling Player of the Year as announced by the conference on Thursday. Norfolk State's Thea Aspiras of was named the Rookie of the Year while Norfolk State head coach Wilhelmenia Harrison earned Coach of the Year accolades.  All awards were voted on by the conference's head bowling coaches and sports information directors. 

Rodriguez earned her third consecutive Player of the Year honor after guiding the No. 2 Lady Hawks to a 28-2 mark in conference play and 91-28 record overall.  The senior totaled 10,770 pinfall and averaged a 211 in 51 games.  The MEAC Preseason Bowler of the Year, bowled a high game of 278 at a MEAC  northern division meet, with a 226.6 average in five games. Rodriguez earned two All-Tournament honors this season (Capital Classic and Mid-Winter Classic) and was named MEAC Bowler of the Week in December.

Aspiras led the Spartans with a 200.1 average in 52 games. The freshman recorded 10,606 total pinfall and recorded a game high 277 at the Kutztown Invitational. A two time MEAC Bowler of the Week, Aspiras earned Most Valuable Player honors at two invites this season.

In her sixth season at the helm, Harrison guided the Spartans to a 62-46 regular season record and 18-6 mark in MEAC play. The Spartans won their second southern divisional title and are currently ranked 17th in the nation by the National Tenpins Coaches Association (NTCA).

Joining Rodriguez and Asprias on the 2010-2011 All-MEAC First-Team are Maryland Eastern Shore's Kristina Frahm, Martha Perez and Anggie Ramirez.

Nicole Bower and Jazmyne Hefflefinger of Delaware State, Hampton's Rebecca Glazier, Atoya Leatherbury of Morgan State and Maryland Eastern Shore's Paula Vilas earned All-MEAC Second-Team accolades.

The 2011 MEAC Bowling Championship begins Friday, March 18 at the Gate City Lanes in Greensboro, North Carolina with the qualifying rounds. Play continues on Saturday with teams competing in a best-of-seven Baker series. The championship concludes on Sunday, March 20 beginning with the semifinal round at 9:50 a.m. and concluding with the championship final at 11:45 a.m. The championship finale will air tape-delayed on ESPNU on March 28 at 7 p.m.
