SC State Defeats Florida A&M, 76-70, in Overtime

Tallahassee, Fla.— South Carolina State closed out its 2010-11 MEAC play with a 76-70 overtime victory over Florida A&M at the Al Lawson MCTG on the campus of Florida A&M. The win is the third straight for the Lady Bulldogs and second straight road win. 

Florida A&M (FAMU) began the game very aggressive, jumping out to a 14-2 run.  Over the next four minutes, SC State (10-16, 6-10) put together a mini 9-3 run to pull within four, 17-13.  FAMU then used a 7-2 run to jump ahead 24-15 with a little over eight minutes remaining. The Lady Rattlers enjoyed a four point lead, 36-32, heading into intermission.

After both teams went scoreless over a five minute span, FAMU (14-14, 8-7 MEAC) put together a 7-0 run to pull within three, 47-50, with 7:56 remaining.  The Lady Rattlers cut the score to one, before a three pointer by Jasmine Grice gave FAMU a one point lead with just over five minutes remaining. 

A free-throw by the Lady Bulldogs Tiara Knotts tied the game at 53-53.  FAMU regained the lead off a jumper by Grice in the half. A short jumper by Knotts once again tied the game at 57-57. 

Senior guard Whitney Wiley hit a three-pointer with just 1.5 remaining that tied the game at 63-63 that eventually sent the contest into overtime.

Wiley and Knotts led SC State in scoring with 13 points each.  Fannie Goodwin recorded a double-double, 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds in the victory.

Florida A&M was led in scoring and rebounding by Qiana Donald with 15 and 12 respectively.

Coleman Leads Eagles to Victory over Norfolk State

Norfolk, Va. – Freshman Kyra Coleman scored a career-high 20 points and also grabbed 11 rebounds as Coppin State snapped a two-game losing streak with a 64-50 MEAC victory over Norfolk State on Monday in Echols Hall.

Coleman sparked a second-half rally by the Eagles as she scored 16 of her 20 points after halftime helping Coppin State to overcome a four-point deficit at the intermission. She finished the game 8-of-14 from the floor and 4-of-6 from the free throw line.

Coppin State (11-16, 8-7 MEAC) shot 53.3 percent from the floor in the second half, while limiting Norfolk State to just 29.7 percent shooting. The Eagles shot just 22.2 percent in the first half and trailed 24-20 at halftime.

The Eagles also received 15 points from Dawnnae Roberts, while Shawntae Payne scored 12 points. Larrisa Carter grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds for Coppin State.

Norfolk State (9-17, 2-13 MEAC) was led by Whitney Long who scored 13 points and Recca Trice who had 11 points.

Norfolk State scored the first two baskets of the second half to open a 28-20 lead before the Eagles rallied.

Roberts hit one of two free throws and a three-point basket to ignite a 9-2 Coppin State run that brought the Eagles to within 30-29 within the second half.

Coppin State took its first lead of the second half when Roberts drilled a three-pointer giving the Eagles a 34-32 lead.

The Eagles took the lead for good when Coleman converted two free throws for a 40-38 lead with just over nine minutes remaining in the contest.

Free Throws and Threes Help Morgan State Beat North Carolina A&T

Greensboro, N.C. – The Morgan State Lady Bears frustrated North Carolina A&T throughout by hitting 3-pointers and free throws in a 74-69 win at Corbett Sports Center Monday evening.

The Bears (16-12, 10-5) hit 11 3-pointers and made 23 of 25 free throws. Erin Hawkins led the way with 17 points on 5-for-10 shooting from 3-point range. Brittany Dodson added 15 points on 9-for-10 shooting at the line.

Jaleesa Sams led N.C. A&T with 23 points.

The Aggies trailed by as many as 14 in the second half. But a Sams 3-pointer tied the game at 56. The Bears responded by going on a 9-2 run that included a 6-for-6 stretch at the free throw line and a 3-pointer by Brittany Noel that giving the Bears a 65-58 lead.

N.C. A&T cut the lead down to three four times within the last 40 seconds of the game. But the Bears were able to convert enough free throws to keep the lead.
