NC Central Uses Late Surge to Defeat Howard North Carolina Central 79, Howard 70
Washington, DC-Landon Clement scored 23 of 26 points in the second half including a clutch 3- pointer with the shot clock winding down, and CJ Wilkerson added 16 of his 20 points after intermission to lead North Carolina Central to a 79-70 win over Howard in a non-conference men's game at Burr Gymnasium. The loss snapped a two-game win streak for the Bison (4-19).
The game was competitive from start to finish and Howard was able to get the upper hand in the first 20 minutes as Dadrian Collins (10 points), Anton Dickerson (9) and Kyle Riley (8) combined to help the Bison take a 34-28 lead to the locker room. The Eagles (11-10) got 15 points from Nick Chasten but Clement and Wilkerson, their two big weapons on offense, managed only seven points between them on a combined 3-of-11 shooting from the floor.
Dickerson led the Bison with 24 points, two off his career high. Collins added 13, Mike Phillips 10, and Alphonso Leary tallied eight points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Riley finished with 15 points and a career-high eight assists while logging 39 minutes and handling the baseline to baseline full-court pressure of NCCU.
Clement led all scorers with 26, Chasten with 20, 15 coming in the first half, Wilkerson with 16 and six assists and Jeremy Ingram with 10 off the bench.

Eagles Defeat First-Place Bethune-Cookman In Overtime
Coppin State 90, Bethune-Cookman 79
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Akeem Ellis and Tony Gallo combined to score 15 of Coppin State's 19 points in overtime leading the Eagles to a 90-79 victory over Bethune-Cookman in a MEAC game on Saturday in Moore Gymnasium.
Led by Ellis and Gallo, Coppin State outscored the Wildcats 19-8 in the extra session to win for the fifth time in the last six games. The Eagles improved to 11-10 overall and 6-3 in the MEAC. Bethune-Cookman, which entered the contest in first place in the MEAC, fell to 13-10 overall and 7-2 in league play.
Gallo, who scored all eight of his points in the overtime period, scored the first seven Coppin State overtime points. He converted a three-point play and then made four consecutive free throws to give the Eagles a 78-72 lead with 3:03 left in overtime.
Ellis, who finished with a career-high 21 points, then took over as he scored seven of the Eagles final 11 points.
Coppin State made 29-of-39 free throw attempts, including 13-of-17 in overtime, to improve to 44-10 all-time against Bethune-Cookman. It marked the third consecutive game between the two teams that has been decided in overtime.
Ellis, who also grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds, led four players in double figures in scoring. Jordan Lee had 20 points, while Harper finished with 17 points. Vince Goldsberry added 10 points and three assists for the Eages.
CJ Reed led all scorers with a game-high 34 points for Bethune-Cookman. Stanley Elliott had 14 points and Alexander Starling added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Pirates Beat Bulldogs For Third Straight Win
Hampton 64, South Carolina State 53
HAMPTON, Va. - Hampton picked up its third straight win Saturday night, beating South Carolina State 64-53 at the HU Convocation Center.
Junior guard Kwame Morgan led the Pirates with 14 points - going 7-for-9 from the free throw line - while junior guard Darrion Pellum added 12 points and sophomore forward Koron Reed scored a career-high 10 points, all in the first half.
Junior forward Danny Agbelese pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds and blocked three shots. Pellum added a team-high five assists.
After Omar Sanders hit a trey with 19:21 left in the second half to give SCSU a 25-24 lead, the Pirates went on an 8-2 run to take a 33-27 lead on a Pellum 3-point play. A 7-2 Bulldog run tied the game at 37-37 with 12:08 to play after Joe Ikhinwin hit a jumper, and Rio Pitt tied the game again at 39-39 at the 11:26 mark with a jumper.
But the Pirates responded, going up 44-39 with 9:42 to play on a Pellum trey. A layup from senior guard Brandon Tunnell with 4:47 to play put Hampton up 52-46. Senior forward Charles Funches sank a layup with 1:09 to play to put the Pirates up 56-47.
The Pirates went on to make eight of 10 free throws down the stretch to ice the game.
Tyvon Williams led SCSU with 12 points, while Sanders added 10 points and Pitt pulled down 13 rebounds.

White, Hawks Snap NSU's 5-Game Win Streak
Maryland Eastern Shore 88, Norfolk State 84
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Kevin White scored a game-high 22 points, and host Maryland Eastern Shore shot 54.5 percent and held off a late Norfolk State rally to claim an 88-84 victory on Saturday at the Hytche Center.
Tyler Hines had 17 points and 16 rebounds, Hillary Haley added 16 points and Lyvann Obame Obame 15 for the Hawks (5-17, 2-7 MEAC), who snapped their five-game losing streak and broke the five-game winning streak of the Spartans (7-14, 5-4).
Despite not tallying a single point or rebound in the first half, Kyle O'Quinn finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds for his 10th double-double of the year to lead NSU. Aleek Pauline added 16 points, seven assists and seven rebounds without committing a turnover.
The Spartans trailed just 59-57 after a Pauline free throw with 10:09 remaining in the game, but the Hawks went on a 13-3 run to take control. Haley had five points in the spurt, which ended with the Spartans trailing 72-60 with 5:40 left.
NSU went six minutes - from the 10:23 mark to the 4:23 mark - without a field goal. Still, the Spartans crawled back in it with a frantic last-gasp push. O'Quinn hit a 3-pointer with 19 seconds left to trim the UMES lead to 85-82. But Dishawn Bradshaw hit two free throws at the other end.
Pauline cut the lead to three once more, at 87-84, with four seconds left. But Haley hit 1-of-2 free throws to seal it.

Rattlers Withstand Late Surge By MSU, 63-59
Florida A&M 63, Morgan State 59
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Forward Yannick Crowder scored 15 points and Chris Watson had 11 points to lead Florida A&M to a 63-59 victory over Morgan State on Saturday in Tallahassee.
Florida A&M (8-13, 3-6 MEAC) recorded its first win against the Bears since January 17, 2009, and improved to 8-1 on their home court at the Al Lawson Center.
Ameer Ali, who entered the game averaging 6.3 points per game, was the Bears leading scorer tonight by finishing with 15 points on 6-for-11 shooting. The junior also collected four rebounds and two steals.
Sophomore DeWayne Jackson was held well under his 15.7 points per game, as he finished with seven points (1-4 FG), his lone basket coming on a 3-pointer in the final moments of the contest.
Morgan State (10-10, 6-3 MEAC), which entered the game attempting to extend to a 3-game winning streak, erased a 14-point deficit in the second half. The Bears trailed 59-56 with 1:11 remaining on a basket by Kevin Thompson.
Thompson collected his ninth double-double of the season with 13 points (6-13 FG) and a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Rattlers never trailed in the second half.
Despite outrebounding Florida A&M by a 36-31 margin, the Bears were outscored 30-24 inside the paint.

Hornets Drop Overtime Contest To Aggies
North Carolina A&T 78, Delaware State 73 OT
Dover, Del. (Feb. 5, 2011) --- Senior Thomas Coleman had game-highs of 30 points and 12 rebounds to lead North Carolina A&T to a 78-73 overtime win at Delaware State in a MEAC men's basketball contest in Memorial Hall this evening.
The Aggies won their fourth straight game to improve to 10-13 overall and 5-4 in the MEAC, while the Hornets dropped their fourth in a row to fall to 8-13 and 4-5.
Delaware State's five MEAC losses have been by a combined 15 points, including two overtime contests. The Hornets' last eight games have been decided by five points or less.
Coleman was 13-for-17 from the field and 4-of-4 at the free throw line. He also had three blocks, two assists and a steal in the contest. Marc Hill added 12 points and Ray Lester 11 for the Aggies.
Casey Walker led four Delaware State players in double figures with 19 points. His performance included five three-point field goals. Desi Walker had 18 points, highlighted by four three-pointers, for the Hornets. DSU's Jay Threatt recorded 13 points, nine assists and four steals, while Marques Oliver had 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds for the Hornets.
Delaware State's Desi Washington missed the potential game-tying three-point shot with 17 seconds left to play.
