Parker, Morton Help UMES Surge by Norfolk State
Princess Anne, Md. - Chena Parker scored a season-high 19 points and grabbed five rebounds and Casey Morton recorded 18 points and six boards to lead Maryland Eastern Shore to a 72-49 win over Norfolk State at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center Saturday.
Parker shot 7-for-12 from the field while Morton was 5-for-9 for the Lady Hawks, who stopped a two-game losing streak with the win. Norfolk State, which received 12 points from Sarah Daily, dropped its third straight.
UMES (8-14, 5-4 MEAC) led from start to finish. The 72 points scored marked a season high for the Lady Hawks.
UMES jumped out to a 15-7 advantage in the game's first five minutes. Parker tallied eight in the stretch, including a 3-pointer to open the scoring.
NSU (8-11, 1-8) battled back with an 8-0 run to knot the game at 15-15 in less than two minutes. Daily hit a trey and Whitney Long a layup to pull the Spartans even with 13:39 remaining.
Junior Sarah Daily led the Spartans with 12 points, while sophomore Batavia Owens contributed seven. Freshman Rachel Gordon tallied a team-high eight rebounds with five points.
The Lady Hawks took the lead for good, 19-17, with a Morton layup. The basket sparked a 7-2 run for UMES that LaKendra Wilkerson capped with a three-point play. UMES led by as many as 10, 32-33, on an Amber Cook free throw before the break, taking a 32-24 edge into the locker room when Norfolk State's Tyisha Bridges converted a fastbreak layup in the final minute.
Parker led all players with 12 points in the period.
The Spartans scored the first four points of the second half to cut the deficit to 32-28 when Rae Corbo and Marian Brooks hit shots, but UMES rattled off 12 of the next 16 to extend its lead to 44-32.

27 NCCU Turnovers Supply Necessary Leverage for 66-33 Howard Win
Washington, D.C. - In spite of North Carolina Central senior Shanise Blanks coming off the bench sinking 12 points from the behind the arc for the Lady Eagles. The visitor's 27 turnovers and senior Jori Nwachukwu fouling out of the contest at the 6:46 mark provided the Bison the leverage the needed to take 66-33 win on Saturday, Feb. 5 in Burr Gymnasium..
Tamoria Holmes, who led with 11 points at the half, quickly snapped the NCCU lead, pacing the Bison to a 19-0 run with a score of 24-9. Neely broke the run with a two-point jumper.
The Lady Bison netted two free throws and a jumper to end the first-half at 28-11. NCCU's 11-point scoring, matches the first-half 11-point low outing on Feb. 9, 2010 against Winthrop.
As the second-half of play commenced Saadia Doyle paced the Bison offense. Doyle scored the first two points of the half from the free-throw line, and went on to score 12 points in the second-half for a total 20 points.
Jenkins netted the Lady Eagles first two points of the second-half, followed by Nwachukwu's first points of the contest at the 16:31 mark. Blanks netted her first three-point basket pacing a small 7-5 NCCU run, 34-18.
Holmes answered back with her own behind the arc shot to launch an eight-minute 20-8 run, 54-23.
In final five minutes of the contest, Blanks attempted to revive the offense with nine points from the long range. But the host team scored 12 final points to cruise to a 66-33 win.

McMillian, Jenkins Lead Lady Pirates Past S.C. State
Hampton, Va. - Several Lady Pirates had career nights on Saturday, as they defeated South Carolina State 77-57 at the HU Convocation Center for their fourth straight win.
Senior forward Quanneisha Perry recorded her eighth double-double of the season with a team-high 25 points and 16 rebounds, while junior guard Choicetta McMillian scored a career-high 22 points behind six 3-pointers.
Sophomore forward Keiara Avant added a career-high 11 points, while junior center Sherena Abercrumbia tied her career high with eight points.
Junior guard Jericka Jenkins dished out a career-high 17 assists; she sits second in school history for most assists in a game, behind the 20 assists Jackie Wyche dished out in 1986 against Virginia Union.
The Lady Bulldogs opened the second half on an 11-2 run to cut Hampton's lead to 37-28 in the second half after a Tiara Knotts 3-pointer, but the Lady Pirates scored eight unanswered points to go up 46-28 after an Abercrumbia layup.
McMillian hit her sixth trey of the night, capping a 22-9 run to give the Lady Pirates a 62-37 lead.
The Lady Pirates shot 40.6 percent from the floor, while also making 17 of 20 free throws. Hampton (16-6, 9-1 MEAC) also out-rebounded SCSU 47-32.
SCSU (6-13, 2-7 MEAC) shot 40.4 percent from the floor in its seventh straight loss, turning the ball over 19 times. Whitney Wiley led the Lady Bulldogs with 21 points.

Payne Leads Balanced Eagles Past Bethune-Cookman
Daytone Beach, Fla. - Shawntae Payne led five players in double figures with 14 points and Coppin State used a strong second half shooting performance to defeat Bethune-Cookman 76-57 in a MEAC game on Saturday in Moore Gymnasium.
Coppin State (8-12, 5-4 MEAC) shot 57.7 percent from the floor in the second half to pull away from the Wildcats. The Eagles won for the sixth time in their last eight games and moved over the .500 mark in conference play at 5-4.
Payne was 6-of-13 from the floor to lead the Eagles, while Leola Spotwood and Larrisa Carter each added 13 points for Coppin State. CSU also received 11 points each from Ashle Craig and Kyra Coleman.
Bethune-Cookman (11-10, 4-5 MEAC) was led by Amanda Hairston who scored a game-high 15 points. Sarah Bolden added 12 points and 11 rebounds and Kiara Redmon had 10 points.
Coppin State took control of the game early in the first half with a 17-0 run.
After the Wildcats opened the game with a basket and a free throw to take a 3-0 lead, Coppin State responded by scoring the next 17 points.
Leading 43-38, Craig started the run with a jumper to increase the CSU lead to 45-38. Carter then scored back-to-back baskets to increase the lead to 49-38.
Payne connected on a jumper to increase the lead to 13 points and Coleman capped the run with a free throw that gave the Eagles a 52-38 lead.

Lady Rattlers Drop Tough Defensive Battle 63-54 to Morgan State
Tallahassee, Fla. - The Florida A&M Lady Rattlers lost 63-54 to the Morgan State Lady Bears this afternoon in a defensive battle at the Alfred Lawson Jr. Multipurpose Center and Teaching Gymnasium. The halftime score of 25-18, in favor of Morgan State was a result of a tough defensive strategy employed by both teams, often with full court pressure.
In the first half, the Lady Rattlers were led in scoring and rebounds by Qiana Donald, who muscled in eight points in the paint and pulled in seven rebounds. Jasmine Grice added six points; while Tameka McKelton and Antonia Bennett scored two points each to round out the Lady Rattlers' scoring in the half.
The Lady Bears had a balanced attack with Brittany Dodson and Moneshia Davis scoring five points. Five other Lady Bears scored in the first half.
In the second half, the Lady Rattlers turned up the heat on defense and found their rhythm from the field as they tied up the game with 15:30 to go in the half. Morgan clawed their way to a three-point lead, but the Lady Rattlers kept pressing, taking a 36-35 lead on a Danielle Anderson layup.
The game went back and forth until an Antonia Bennett steal with 12 seconds remaining, with the Lady Rattlers trailing 51-50. The Rattlers would take their final possession with eight seconds remaining. Bennett was fouled on the inbounds attempt and split the pair of free throws to take the game to overtime in a 51-51 tie.
Donald finished with a team high 15 points for the Lady Rattlers. McKelton and Bennett finished with 10 points each. Bennett led all rebounders with 17 for the game.
For the Bears, Davis led the way with 15 points. Dodson added 13, and Theresa Davis scored 10. Theresa Davis also grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Bears.

Lady Hornets Top Aggies To End Skid
Dover, Del. (Feb. 5, 2011) --- Freshman guard Kianna Conner led three Delaware State players double figures with a career-high 19 points in a win over North Carolina A&T in Memorial Hall this evening.
The Lady Hornets snapped a six-game losing streak to improve to 6-15 overall and 2-7 in the MEAC. The Aggies lost their second straight game to fall 9-11 and 5-4.
Conner's performance included a career-high five three-point field goals. Her previous high scoring game was 18 vs. Wesley on Jan 1.
Brittany Washington and Tasia Bristow added 14 points each for Delaware State.
Malaka Scott led North Carolina A&T with 19 points, while Jaleesa Sams had 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
The contest featured nine ties and 10 lead changes.
North Carolina A&T forced the final tie of the game 67-67 on a jumper by Scott with 1:58 left. On the ensuing possession, Delaware State pulled ahead for good on a short jumper by Tonya Clark.
After the Aggies failed to score on their next possession, the Lady Hornets opened up a 71-67 lead on a lay up by Tonya Clark with 53 seconds left to play.
North Carolina A&T committed a turnover and missed a shot on its next two possessions. Conner hit two free throws with 24 seconds left to seal the win for the Lady Hornets.
