MEAC Announces Basketball Weekly Honors

North Carolina A&T center Thomas Coleman was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. Howard's Alphonso Leary was named the Rookie of the Week and Norfolk State's Kyle O'Quinn earned the Defensive Player of the Week honor respectively. 

Coleman (C, 6-9, 240, Sr., Louisville, Ky.) averaged 22.5 points 10.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.0 blocks to lead the Aggies to a 2-0 mark last week. He scored 21 points, nine rebounds, six assists and one block in a 72-67 non-conference win over North Carolina Central. In a win over Coppin State, he recorded a double-double of 24 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks. For the week, Coleman shot 78-percent (18-of-23) from the floor and 60-percent (9-of-15) from the charity stripe.  

Leary (C, 6-8, 190, Fr., Norfolk, Va.) totaled 30 points, 13 rebounds, three steals and two blocks in two games for the Bison. Against Bethune-Cookman, Leary shot 70-percent from the floor (7-of-10) and 58-percent from the free-throw line (7-of-12) and added two steals, one block and one steal.


O'Quinn (F/C, 6-10, 240, Jr., Jamaica, N.Y.)
pulled down 27 rebounds and blocked nine shots as the Spartans went 1-1 last week. Against South Carolina State, O'Quinn pulled down nine rebounds, blocked six shots and stole one ball.  He followed that performance with 18 rebounds, three blocks and one steal in a win over Morgan State.  Offensively, O'Quinn combined for 37 points and four assists while shooting 65-percent from the floor.

Akeem Ellis
(CSU) recorded 29 points and nine rebounds in a loss to North Carolina A&T.

Hillary Haley
(UMES) scored 26 points, including a perfect 10-of-10 from the charity stripe, in a win over Howard.

Michael Harper (CSU) averaged 22.5 points and 4.5 rebounds to lead the Eagles to a 1-1 mark last week.  


Mike Phillips (How) averaged 15.5 points and 5.0 rebounds in two games for the Bison.

CJ Reed (B-CU) totaled 43 points, seven rebounds, 11 assists and two steals in two Wildcat wins.


Kyle Riley
(How) combined for 15 points, five rebounds, eight assists and six steals against Bethune-Cookman and Maryland Eastern Shore.
