UMES Stops Four-Game Skid; Tops Howard, 53-50, on Homecoming

Princess Anne, Md. - Casey Morton scored 14 points and grabbed three rebounds and three steals to lead UMES to a 53-50 win over Howard on Homecoming at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center Saturday.

Morton shot 3-for-8 from the field, and including 3-for-5 from 3-point range, leading three players in double figures as UMES (9-18, 6-8 MEAC) won for the second straight season on Homecoming and snapped Howard's (13-16, 9-6) three-game winning streak. The win also broke the Lady Hawks' four- game skid.

Trailing by eight in the second half, 42-34, Morton hit a 3-pointer and Shanyce Stewart knocked down a free throw to pull within, 42-38.

Saadia Doyle, who scored a game-high 18 points, responded with a three-point play but UMES used a 7-0 run to knot the game at 45-all on a pair of free throws by Morton. She blocked a jumper by Doyle and collected the rebound, racing the length of the floor, before getting hacked from behind on the play that tied the game.

Morton then stole a Kara Smith pass and Amber Cook hit a layup as UMES took its first lead of the second half.

After Cheyenne Curley-Payne tied the game with free throws with two minutes left, Morton knocked in a clutch 3-pointer from the wing for a 50-47 advantage and UMES didn't look back.

Chelsea Sanders and Cook finished with 11 and 10 points respectively, for UMES.

Tamoria Holmes (12 points) and Curley-Payne (10) also had double figures for the Lady Bision.

UMES tied a season low with 14 turnovers and forced 18 Bison miscues, turning them into 11 points. Howard won the battle of the boards, 41-27, on the strength of 11 from Doyle

SC State Comea From Behind to Defeat Bethune-Cookman, 64-60

Daytona Beach, Fla. - SC State turned a four-point half-time deficit into a four-point victory as they defeated Bethune-Cookman, 64-60, in MEAC contest at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Fla.  The victory is the first road win of the 2010-11 season for the Lady Bulldogs.

Bethune Cookman opened the game on a 16-2 run over the first six minutes.  SC State then used a 14-0 run to tie the game at 16-16 with less than nine minutes remaining.  The teams exchanged baskets over the next four minutes before a jumper by the Lady Wildcats Amanda Hairston  began an 11-0 run which gave Bethune-Cookman the 34-23 lead with just over one minute remaining in the half.  SC State closed the half with a 7-0 run to go into the locker room down by four, 34-30, at the half.

The second half of the contest was one of runs.  SC State began the half with a 5-0 run to take the one point lead, 35-34.  Bethune-Cookman used a 7-0 run over the next three minutes to take a six point lead, 41-35, with just over 14 minutes remaining. 

SC State (9-16, 5-10 MEAC) had four players to score in double-figures led by senior guard Whitney Wiley with a game-high 20 points.  Sophomore Paris Alston contributed 13 points-eight rebounds while Tiara Knotts and Fannie Goodwin added 12 and 10 points, respectively.  Goodwin also pulled in seven rebounds in the victory.

Bethune-Cookman (12-13, 5-10 MEAC) was led by Amanda Hairston with 17 points-15 rebounds.  The Lady Wildcats had three players in all to record double-digits as Jasmine Elum scored 15 and Sarah Bolden contributed 11 points in the contest.  Bolden and Jasmine Daniels pulled in seven rebounds each in the loss.

Lady Pirates Extend Win Streak to Nine

Hampton 77, Delaware State 64 

Dover, Del. Hampton ran its winning streak to nine games on Saturday, as the Lady Pirates defeated Delaware State 77-64 at Memorial Hall.

Junior guard Choicetta McMillian led the Lady Pirates with 16 points, while sophomore forward Keiara Avant added 15 points and seven rebounds. Junior guard Jericka Jenkins added 13 points and a team-high 10 assists for her fourth double-double of the season.

Senior forward Quanneisha Perry added eight points and seven rebounds.

Hampton opened the game on a 13-1 run, culminating in a 3-pointer from McMillian in the first half. Delaware State then scored five unanswered points, before the Lady Pirates went on an 14-4 run – taking a 28-10 lead on a trey from Avant.

The Lady Pirates led by as many as 27, 49-22, in the first half after an Avant free throw with 34 seconds left. Hampton held a 49-24 lead at the half.

The Lady Hornets could never get closer than within 13, after Kianna Conner drained a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left to push the game to its final margin.

The Lady Pirates (21-6, 14-1 MEAC) shot 41.1 percent from the floor, while also hitting 27 of 38 free throws. Hampton also out-rebounded Delaware State 37-31, and the Lady Pirates forced Delaware State into 19 turnovers.

Delaware State (9-18, 5-10 MEAC) shot 40.4 percent from the floor. Washington and Conner each scored a team-high 13 points, while Kianna D’Oliveira added 10 points. Washington also pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.

North Carolina A&T Dominates Coppin State 81-58

North Carolina A&T 81, Coppin State 58

Greensboro, N.C. - Jaquayla Berry and Reisha Bullock each scored 17 points leading North Carolina A&T to an 81-58 victory over Coppin State in a MEAC game on Saturday in the Corbett Sports Center.

North Carolina A&T (14-12, 9-5 MEAC) never trailed in the game in handing Coppin State its second consecutive loss. The Aggies forced the Eagles into 32 turnovers and limited CSU to 34.4 percent shooting from the floor.

The Aggies took control early and opened the game on a 13-2 run, which included back-to-back three-point baskets by Berry.

Trailing 15-4, Coppin State (10-16, 7-7 MEAC) responded with a 7-2 run to cut the lead to 17-11in the first half.

North Carolina A&T pushed the lead back to 12 points at 24-12, but a free throw by Larrisa Carter and a layup by Jaleah Holsey brought the Eagles to within 24-15 in the opening half.

The Aggies responded with a 9-0 run to take its largest lead of the first half at 33-15.

Coppin State had a response of its own as the Eagles closed the first half on a 7-0 run, keyed by a three-pointer by Jessica Mayes, to climb to within 33-22 at the half.

North Carolina A&T stretched the lead to as much as 30 points in the second half.

The Aggies also received 16 points from Mikala Scott and 11 points and 11 rebounds from Jaleesa Sams.

Leola Spotwood had 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead Coppin State and Kyra Coleman also had 14 points. Roberts finished with 13 points for the Eagles

Norfolk State Upsets Lady Bears, 66-65

Norfolk State 66, Morgan State 65

Norfolk, Va. - Rae Corbo scored a team-high 20 points, including four 3-pointers and Rachel Gordon grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds to go with her nine points to lead Norfolk State to a 66-6 MEAC victory over visiting Morgan State on Saturday afternoon at Echols Hall.

The win was just the second conference victory for the last-place Spartans, who improved to 9-16 overall and 2-12 in the MEAC to end an eight-game game losing skid. The win also put an end to Morgan's seven-game winning streak over the Spartans.

Morgan State (15-12, 9-5 MEAC), which entered the game in second-place in the league standings, was led by Mahala Thomas' career- and game-high 25 points. Thomas came off the bench and shot 10-of-15, from the field, including 5-of-7 from three-point range in the loss. Brittany Dodson added 10 points and Whitney Southerland chipped in with eight.

Morgan State, which struggled all afternoon to gain control of the game, took a 65-62 lead with 58 seconds remaining on two free throws by Dodson. But the hosts, which overcame a seven-point (45-38) second half deficit, received a layup by Whitney Long to pull within 65-64. The Spartans then forced a Morgan State turnover, the 16th of the game and Sarah Daily (eight points) hit a jumper from the left side of the free throw line to put Norfolk State up for good with 9.7 to play.

The Lady Bears held a rare rebounding advantage over an opponent (37-33) with Brittany Noel and Moneshia Davis each pulling down a team-high six boards. Morgan State however was limited to 5-of-7 (71.4 percent) from the free throw line, while the host Spartans connected on 10-of-17 (58.8 percent).
