Lady Rattlers Holds Off UCF, 5-4

Florida A&M held off  a Central Florida seventh inning rally to hang on for a 5-4 win in their home opener, here Wednesday evening at the Lady Rattler Softball Complex.

FAMU (5-5) recorded five hits, while UCF(3-7) punched out seven hits.

The Lady Rattlers had five players to finish with one hit each as Whitney Robinson finished with a high two RBIs.

Natalie McClain led the Knights in hits as she went two-for- four from the plate.  Vanessa Perez led UCF in RBIs with two.

Robinson (3-3) picked up her third win of the season as he went the distance, allowing seven hits, three earned runs and striking out four in seven innings.

Haley Douglas received the loss for the Knights as she gave up four hits, two earned runs and striking out two in four innings of work.

In the bottom of the second, the Lady Rattlers took advantage of two Knight's errors as Ericka Garcia scored on an infielder's error, giving FAMU a 1-0 lead.

FAMU picked up three more runs in the bottom of the fourth as Brittany Doty ground out to third scoring Francesca Singletary.  Then the Knights would intentionally walk Tenisha Dixon to load the bases, setting up a Robinson two-RBI single scoring both Ashanti Shepherd and Garcia, making the score 4-0 in favor of the Lady Rattlers.

Tera Gainer would give the Lady Rattlers a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth as she scored on Garcia ground out to second.

In the top of the sixth inning, Natalie Land would score on a Marissa Menendez single up the middle, and then both Menendez and Kellie Todd would score on a Vanessa Perez single down the left field line, cutting FAMU's lead to 5-3.

In the UCF seventh inning, Robinson would retire the first two batters.  Then Land would single up the middle and then advance to second on a Lady Rattler error.  She would then score on a McClain double down the right field line, cutting FAMU's lead to 5-4.  UCF's next batter Menendez then fly out to left field for the 5-4 final.
