Junior Paige Arnold pitched a three-hit shutout in game one and hit a three-run home run and picked up the save in the second game leading Coppin State to a doubleheader sweep of Norfolk State on Sunday at the NSU Softball Field in the Eagles season opener.
The Eagles won the opener 4-0 and completed the sweep with a 9-2 victory in the second game.
Arnold was dominant for Coppin State in the first game as she allowed just three hits and struck out 10 batters. She allowed only one hit after the first inning and retired 12 consecutive batters from the second inning through the fifth inning.
Offensively, Stacey Burgos had a pair of runs batted in and Heather Josker had two hits to lead the way. The Eagles also received hits from Arnold, Tiffani Whaley, Erica Washington and Carmen Frazier.
The Eagles jumped out in the front in the first inning when Josker singled to lead off the inning and Jade Dudley followed with a walk.
Arnold sacrificed both runners up and Burgos brought in the first Coppin State run of the year with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
The Eagles then added to their total with a pair of runs in the fifth inning.
Charma Robinson and Amber Miller walked to lead off the inning. Washington laced a double to left center that scored Robinson and pushed the Coppin State lead to 2-0.
Frazier then lined a single to left that scored Miller with the final run of the game.
The Eagles rolled to the victory in the second game as Arnold hit a three-run homer and Burgos had two hits and two RBI.
Washington singled to lead off the CSU third inning and advanced when Patrice Williams was hit by a pitch. Arnold then followed with a deep blast to left centerfield giving the Eagles an early 3-0 lead.
Norfolk State (2-2) fought back with single runs in the third and fourth innings.
Coppin State stretched the lead to 5-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Williams reached on an error and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Josker. Arnold drew a two-out walk and Burgos delivered an RBI single pushing the lead to 4-2.
Coppin State increased the lead to 5-2 when Arnold stole home and Burgos stole second on the double steal.
The Eagles broke the game open in the top of the seventh with four runs. Burgos and Charma Robinson each had RBI's for the Eagles during the inning.
