Baltimore- Shawntae Payne scored a game-high 14 points and Larrissa Carter added 12 points and 13 rebounds as Coppin State defeated Maryland Eastern Shore, 62-50, at the Physical Education Complex Saturday.
Coppin State improved to 10-14 and 7-5 in the MEAC with the win. UMES fell to 8-17 and 5-7 in the league.
Adobi Agbasi paced UMES with her first career double-double. The junior had 13 points and career highs of 11 rebounds and seven blocks. It marked the first time a UMES player had seven
blocked shots since April McBride did so against Bethune-Cookman on Jan. 26, 2009.
Payne was 4-for-12 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line to help Coppin State to its first win against UMES in four games. Kyra Coleman chipped in with nine points and 15 rebounds while Leola Spotwood had five points and 10 rebounds.
Coppin State jumped out to a 17-3 advantage in the game's first eight minutes behind six points from Dawnnae Roberts and four from Payne.
UMES cut it to a 21-15 margin at the as Shanyce Stewart ignited a 12-4 run with a layup with 10:49 remaining. Casey Morton later hit a shot in transition to make it 18-7 and Cook converted a layup to make it 21-14 before a Courtney Brax free throw.
The Eagles then used an 8-3 stretch to extend their advantage to double digits when Coleman hit a layup for a 29-18 edgemin the opening half.
Coppin State led, 35-20, at halftime. Payne led all players with 11 points on 4-of-8 shoot in the first period.

Lady Bison Extends Home Win-Streak to Seven
Howard 67, Florida A&M 58
Washington, DC – The Howard Lady Bison extended its home winning streak to seven with a 67-58 win over Florida A&M (13-11, 8-5 MEAC) on Sat. Feb. 19. With the win, the Lady Bison split the season series with the Rattlers and improve to 7-5 in MEAC play.
Saadia Doyle led the all scorers with 18 points and 13 rebounds. The redshirt-sophomore is now 29 points away from 1,000. Tamoria Holmes recorded a flawless game with 14 points, five assists, and no turnovers in 35 minutes of action. Adelle Walton proved to be a spark off the bench with 11 points off 4-of-6 shooting from the floor. Cheyenne Curley-Payne chipped in with eight points and eight boards.
The HU defense converted 19 FAMU turnovers into 14 points. Howard also won the battle of the boards, 40-37 – including 15 offensive – and scored 13 points of second chance opportunities. The Lady Bison dominated in the paint, outscoring Florida A&M 36-12.
HU began the game with a 7-0 run, capped by a Doyle layup. FAMU was held scoreless until an Antonia Bennett basket at the fifteen minutes into play. The spread was 14-7 midway through the period and Howard used an 11-3 run over a three-plus span to take its largest lead of the game, 25-10. The Lady Bison took a slim 29-21 advantage at intermission.
In the second stint, HU pushed the margin back to double-digits behind a Curley-Payne jumper to start the period. FAMU chipped into the Lady Bison lead and outscored Howard 12-7 over a three-plus span to make it 38-33. The Rattlers used a Tameka McKelton shot from behind the arc to for a 40-36 score.
For the Rattlers, Bennett tallied a game-high 19 points. McKelton and Jasmine Grice finished with 15 and 11 points, respectively.

NCCU defeats Norfolk State University, 62-56 on Saturday

Durham, N.C. – Senior Jori Nwachukwu, sophomore J’Mia Pollock and freshman Sierra Solomon each netted in double-figures and provided season-high performances to lead the Lady Eagles past Norfolk State University, 62-56 on Saturday.
Seizing her 11th double-double this season with a season-high 28 points and 13 rebounds was Nwachukwu. Pollock posted a season-high in points (15), rebounds (14) and assists (6). Solomon, who is developing and becoming more confident each contest, poured in 11 points.
The Lady Eagles controlled the contest from the tip-off, pacing to a five-point lead within the first four minutes of play. Even with 10 lead changes, they never allowed Norfolk State to reach larger than a one-point margin.
Norfolk State’s Rae Corbo, who led the Lady Spartans with 15 points, recaptured the lead for the visitor in the second half.
Norfolk State’s offense was led by Corbo, Bridges and Sarah Daily, who finished with 12 points in the loss. Corbo distributed four assists and stole three NCCU possessions, while Rachel Gordon pulled down seven rebounds.
NCCU secured its six-point win by outrebounding the Lady Spartans 50-33, stealing more possessions, 12-9, earning 26 points off of second chance opportunities and obtaining 15 points from the bench. Collectively, the Lady Eagles netted 74 percent from the charity stripe, 33 percent from the field and eight percent from the long range.

Late Game Push Not Enough as SC State Fall to NC A&T in Women’s Basketball

Orangeburg, S.C.—S.C. State’s late second half push was not enough as they fell to North Carolina A&T, 77-71, in a MEAC matchup in the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
S.C. State (8-15, 3-10 MEAC) allowed NC A&T to jump out to a seven point advantage early in the first half (9-16) but quickly rebounded. The Lady Bulldogs used an 11-3 run to jump ahead of the Lady Aggies by one (20-19) in the first half.
The teams exchanged baskets over the next three plus minutes before NC A&T (12-12, 8-5 MEAC) used an 8-4 run to jump ahead by three (24-27) with just over eight minutes remaining in the half. The Lady Aggies would increase its lead to 11 (24-35) with just five minutes remaining. The Lady Bulldogs managed to cut the deficit to six (33-39) heading into the half.
Sophomores Trinese Fox and Tiana Hemphill led the way for the Lady Bulldogs with 15 and 12 points, respectively. Hemphill led the team in rebounding with eight boards in the loss.
The Lady Aggies were paced by Jaleesa Sams with 19 points. NC A&T had four players in all to record double-digit points as Mikala Scott and Tracy King each scored 16 and Jaquayla Berry dropped in 12 in the contest. Reisha Bullock pulled in a game-high nine rebounds for the Lady Aggies in the victory.

Women's Basketball Dropped By Delaware State, 59-47; Still Holds Onto Second Place

Baltimore- Delaware State's Brittany Washington scored a game-high 16 points and pulled down eight rebounds, while Tasia Bristow and Kianna Conner added 13 and 12 points, respectively, to lead the visiting Hornets to a 59-47 MEAC victory over Morgan State on Saturday afternoon at Hill Field House.
The victory ended a two-game losing skid for Delaware State (8-17, 4-9 MEAC) which has now won three of its last 11 contest. The win also ended a three-game losing slide to the Lady Bears, while extending Morgan State losing streak to a season-high three games.
Morgan State (14-11, 8-4 MEAC), which has fallen to 37-28 all-time against Delaware State, got a team-high 13 points from Kyla Rollins, who came off the bench and connected on 6-of-9 shooting from the field and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and had a game-high three blocked shots. Moneshia Davis added 11 points and Brittany Dodson added seven points and five rebounds before fouling out.
Morgan State, which has held onto first or second-place in the league standings for the entire season, still remains in second, despite its recent slippage, behind first-place Hampton. Florida A&M (13-12, 8-5 MEAC), which was a game behind Morgan State heading into Saturday, was dealt a 67-58 loss at Howard (12-15, 8-5 MEAC) and remains in third-place tied with Howard.
