Pirates Fall To Wildcats In Double Overtime
HAMPTON, Va. -Hampton fell 78-76 in double overtime to Bethune-Cookman on Saturday at the HU Convocation Center.
The Pirates (19-7, 9-4 MEAC) have lost back-to-back games for the first time this season and fall a game behind Bethune-Cookman in the conference standings.
C.J. Reed hit a floater as time expired to give the Wildcats (16-11, 10-3 MEAC) the win, after the Pirates fought back with a 6-0 run to tie the game at 76-76 on a layup from junior guard Kwame Morgan II with 50 seconds left in the second overtime period.
Reed, who hit all three of his 3-pointers in the overtime periods, sank a floater with 1:50 left in the second overtime to cap a 6-0 B-CU run and give the Wildcats a 76-70 lead.
Reed also hit a trey with four seconds left in the first overtime to force another five minutes.
Junior guard Darrion Pellum led the Pirates with 22 points on 7-for-18 shooting, while Morgan added 20 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Senior guard Brandon Tunnell (Wilmington, Del.) and senior forward Charles Funches each added 14 points; Funches added a team-high 12 rebounds.
The Wildcats shot 42.6 percent (31-for-73) from the floor and out-rebounded the Pirates 51-44. Reed led all scorers with 31 points, while Garrius Holloman added 13 points and 16 rebounds.
Alexander Starling scored 10 points.

MSU Bears Edge VMI in Sears Bracketbusters, 67-62
BALTIMORE - Kevin Thompson scored 18 points to lead to a 67-62 Bracketbusters victory over Virginia Military Institute on Saturday at Hill Field House. With the win the Bears extended their winning streak to three games.
The Bears (13-10) extended their winning streak to three games and improved to 2-1 in ESPN Bracketbuster games since 2009.
Morgan State's big-man tandem of Thompson and Rodney Stokes proved to be a load for the undersized Keydets.
Thompson shot 9-for-9 from the field with eight rebounds, while senior post player Stokes had 16 points and posted a career-high 11 rebounds to go along with three blocked shots. The duo combined for just over half of the Bears' 67 total points.
The Keydets (15-12), who entered the contest as one of the leading scoring teams in the nation (90.3 ppg), led 35-34 at halftime. But the Bears opened the second half on an 11-2 run. Thompson's layup at the 15:04 mark gave the Bears a 41-40 lead, and they ended up holding the lead from that point forward.
Morgan State held its largest lead of the game when Larry Bastfield hit a jumper to put his team up 61-54 with 4:19 left to play. The Keydets whittled the lead 63-61 when D.J. Covington hit a jumper with 15 seconds to go but couldn't get closer as Bastfield and Aric Brooks ended up hitting a pair of free throws apiece to help put the game away.
Bastfield finished with nine points and five rebounds, while Brooks chipped in nine points and seven boards. DeWayne Jackson added 10.
Austin Kenon, who poured in 39 points Tuesday night in a win at Liberty, paced the Keydets with 18 points, but was held to 6-of-20 shooting. Keith Gabrial and D.J. Covington added 15 and 10 points respectively.
Morgan State outscored VMI in the paint by a 36-24 margin, and held a 30-17 advantage in scoring off the bench.

Harper Leads Eagles To 69-67 Win Over Maryland Eastern Shore
BALTIMORE - Michael Harper led four players in double figures with 19 points and Coppin State survived a late run by Maryland Eastern Shore to defeat the Hawks 69-67 in a MEAC game on Saturday in the Physical Education Complex.
Akeem Ellis made two free throws with 1:16 to play giving Coppin State (13-12, 8-4 MEAC) a 67-61 lead, but the Hawks would rally.
Hillary Haley, who led all scorers with 24 points, connected on a three-pointer with 1:02 remaining to cut the lead to 67-64. After a Coppin State turnover, Haley missed on a pair of three-pointers that would have tied the contest.
Harper then made 1-of-2 free throw attempts to up the lead to 68-64 with 7 seconds remaining, but Louis Bell connected on a 3-pointer with 4.3 seconds to play to trim the CSU lead to 68-67.
Ellis then made one of two free throws and Kevin White missed a half-court shot at the buzzer to secure the win for the Eagles.
Michael Murray had a career-high 11 points and a career-high 11 rebounds to post his first career double-double for Coppin State. Vince Goldsberry and Ellis also each scored 11 points.
Haley added 13 rebounds to his 24 points and Lyvann Obame Obame had 10 points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots for Maryland Eastern Shore (6-20, 3-10 MEAC).

Clement Shoots Eagles Past NSU, 82-72
DURHAM, N.C. - North Carolina Central guard Landon Clement scored a game-high 28 points on 9-of-13 shooting to lead the Eagles to an 82-72 win over Norfolk State on Saturday afternoon at McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.
Clement went 5-of-9 from 3-point range for the Eagles (13-12), who shot 54 percent from the floor. C.J. Wilkerson added 20 points and Nick Chasten had 19 to send the Spartans (8-17) to their fourth loss in their last five games.
With the game tied at 30-all, the Eagles outscored NSU 17-5 over the last five-plus minutes of the first half. Clement started the spurt with a 3-pointer and capped it with another trey. NCCU shot 56 percent from the floor in the first half (18-of-32), including 50 percent (6-of-12) from beyond the 3-point arc.
The Eagles maintained a double-digit lead for most of the second half, but NSU closed to within six, 64-58, after a jumper by Rob Hampton and a 3-pointer by Chris McEachin on back-to-back possessions. The teams traded buckets as NSU remaining within 66-60, but Clement hit 3-pointers on consecutive Eagle possessions to stretch the lead back to double digits with 5:16 left.
NCCU led by at least nine the rest of the way.
Kyle O'Quinn led the Spartans with 16 points and 12 rebounds - his sixth straight double-double and 14th of the season. McEachin added 15 points, Hampton had 14 and Rodney McCauley 11.
Other than Clement, Wilkerson and Chasten, no other Eagle scored more than five points.

Bison Use Free Throw Shooting To Down Florida A&M
Washington, DC-February 19---Howard was able to offset serious foul trouble with some good solid free throw shooting in the second half and pull away to a 59-50 win over Florida A&M in a MEAC game at Burr Gymnasium.
The Bison (6-20, 4-9 MEAC) came into the game with nine players in uniform, two of which are walk-ons. The starting five, which has been logging an average of 36 minutes per game through most of the season, was put to the test when three of them were saddled with three fouls in the first 20 minutes.
Howard head coach Kevin Nickelberry went to his short bench early and often in an attempt to offset the disadvantage. The Bison got 10 points from sophomore guard Anton Dickerson and 6 from freshman center Alphonso Leary in the first half before they were forced to go to the bench. The Rattlers (11-16 overall, 6-7 in the MEAC) held a 30-27 lead at the half on the strength of Amin Stevens, who tallied 14 of his game-high 22 points.
Sophomore forward Mike Phillips, the team's leading scorer (13.7) and rebounder (7.3) came off the bench for the first time this season and was rendered ineffective in the first half with only two free throws.
Phillips led the Bison with 13 points, Collins with 11, and Phillips, Riley and Lawrence with eight each.
Stevens led all scorers with 22 but no other Florida A&M player reached double figures.

Hornets Fall To Tennessee State In Sears BracketBusters
Nashville, Tenn. (Feb. 19, 2011) - Delaware State had a disappointing debut in Sears BracketBusters, falling to Tennessee State of the Ohio Valley Conference 78-63 at the Gentry Center this afternoon.
The Hornets have dropped three straight, and seven of their last eight games, to fall to 9-16 this season. The Tigers snapped a three-game skid to improve to 12-15.
Delaware State freshman Casey Walker was the game's high scorer with 21 points. Walker has scored 20-or-more points in seven games this season. Jay Threatt had 13 points and a game-high six assists, while Trevor Welcher added 12 points for the Hornets.
Kenny Moore led three Tennessee State players in double figures with 18 points. Moore was 7-for-10 from the field and 3-of-3 at the free throw line.
The Tigers hit 29 of their 49 shots from the field (59.2%), including 7-of-14 from three-point territory. TSU also held a 39-25 rebounding edge.

Porter Lead Bulldogs Over Aggies 71-57 On Senior Day
ORANGEBURG, SC-Senior forward Darnell Porter tossed in a game-high 23 points in front of a home crowd, on "Senior Day" to lead SC State to a 71-57 victory over conference rival North Carolina A&T
North Carolina A&T was led by Marc Hill with a team-high 20 points, while Nic Simpson chipped in 10 in the loss. SC State improved to 7-19 overall, 3-10 in the MEAC, while N.C. A&T falls to 12-15 overall, 7-6 in the league.
SC State jumped out to a quick 11-0 advantage off a jumper by Darnell Porter at the 15:19 mark. Porter nailed one of his five 3-pointers with 7:06 left in the first-half to give the Bulldogs a 27-16 lead. Marc Hill's 3-pointer cut the SC State lead to five, 27-22 with 6:04 left.
South Carolina State led 33-28 at half-time over the Aggies. The Bulldogs out-rebounded the Aggies 22-15 at the half, along with a season low turnover with just three at the midway point.
Junior forward Omar Sanders open up the second-half with a monster dunk to extend the Bulldogs lead to seven, 35-28 at the 19:40 mark. Senior forward/center Rio Pitt built the momentum on a fast break power dunk to put SC State up 19, 56-37 with 12:22 left in regulation.
Hill tossed in jumper with a little under 9:02 left to cut the Bulldog lead to 12, 58-46. Senior guard Tyvon Williams nailed back-to-back 3-pointers to boost the lead to 19, 68-49 with 4:54 left in the game.
SC State shot 11-of-30 from 3-point range along with out-rebounding the Aggies 40-30 to secure the 71-57 victory. Junior guard Brandon Riley added 11 points and six rebounds, while Tyvon Williams chipped in 10 points and five boards, and Pitt finished with eight points and team-high seven rebounds in the victory.
