O'Quinn, Hampton Spark Spartans Past Howard
Norfolk State 76, Howard 68
NORFOLK, Va. - Rob Hampton scored a game-high 21 points and Kyle O'Quinn added 20 points and 16 rebounds for his fifth straight double-double as Norfolk State snapped a three-game losing streak with a 76-68 win over Howard on Monday night at Echols Hall.
The Spartans (8-16, 6-6 MEAC) blocked a season-high 10 shots, half of them from O'Quinn, to lead a solid defensive effort. The Bison (5-20, 3-9) shot 43 percent from the floor, just 32 percent in the first half.
Howard clawed within five, 36-31, on a three-point play by Alphonso Leary with 18:18 remaining in the game. NSU then responded with a 7-0 run, capped by a Hampton trey, to make it a 12-point game, 43-31.
The Spartans extended their lead to as many as 17, but Howard had one more run left. Leary had another three-point play to bring the Bison within 61-53 with 3:35 remaining. But NSU freshman guard Pendarvis Williams scored off a pass from McCauley. Williams then recorded a block and rebound at the other end, and his long outlet pass led to McCauley's three-point play that put NSU ahead by 13.
Williams added 11 points, five assists, four rebounds and two blocked shots. Aleek Pauline was the third Spartan in double figures, with 10 points. He also dished out five assists. McCauley chipped in with eight points, three assists and three steals off the bench.
Leary had a career-high 17 points for Howard. Anton Dickerson also had 17.

Chasten Buzzer Beater Hands Coppin State
North Carolina Central 77, Coppin State 75
DURHAM, N.C. - Nick Chasten scored on an in-bounds pass with .8 seconds remaining in regulation lifting North Carolina Central to a 77-75 non-conference victory over Coppin State on Monday in McDougald-McLendon Gym.
Chasten, who scored all 16 of his points in the second half, took the pass from Emanuel Chapman and laid in the winning basket just beating the buzzer and giving North Carolina Central a sweep of the season series.
Michael Harper, who scored a team-high 21 points for Coppin State, tied the score at 75-75 when he drained a three-point basket with 19 seconds to play.
On the ensuing possession, C.J. Wilkerson missed a layup but North Carolina Central retained the ball after the scramble for the rebound went out of bounds. After a NCCU timeout, Chasten scored the game-winner.
Coppin State dropped to 12-12 on the season despite shooting 53.2 percent from the floor for the game. The Eagles received 15 points and seven rebounds from Ellis and nine points each from Vince Goldsberry and Tony Gallo.
North Carolina Central, which improved to 12-11 overall, got 21 points from Wilkerson and 19 points from Landon Clement.

Bethune-Cookman Defeats Maryland Eastern Shore

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -Bethune-Cookman defeated the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks 86-50 in front of a Valentine's Day crowd in historic Moore Gymnasium and got some help to move back into a first-place tie atop the MEAC.
CJ Reed's 21 points led five Wildcats into double figures as B-CU (15-11 overall, 9-3) won its second straight. Combined with North Carolina A&T's 74-63 win over first-place Hampton, the win lifted B-CU into a tie with Hampton and set the stage for a huge meeting between the teams Saturday.
A team noted for winning close games all season enjoyed the program's largest margin of victory in a conference game under Head Coach Clifford Reed. It was B-CU's first 30-point win in MEAC play since a 111-81 defeat of Norfolk State on January 31, 2000.
UMES (6-19,3-9) scored the first seven points of the second half, but B-CU withstood the run and built the lead back to 25 on an Aric Miller free throw that made it 59-34 with 10:04 remaining, than the fun really began. For the first time all season in league play, Coach Reed could clear his bench.
Alexander Starling had 18 points and 9 boards for B-CU, while Garrius Holloman had 17 points and 7 boards. Both the B-CU bigs were 7-8 from the field. Kevin Dukes and Stanley Elliott contributed 13, and 10 respectively.

DeWayne Jackson Leads Bears Over Bulldogs
Morgan State 72, South Carolina State 66
ORANGEBURG, SC-Sophomore guard DeWayne Jackson tossed in a team-high 17 points for Morgan State, while junior guard Brandon Riley led the way for SC State with 17 but it wasn't enough as Morgan State cruised to a 72-66 victory over the Bulldogs at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center Monday.
Sophomore guard Khalif Toombs added 11, while senior guard Tyvon Williams dished out a game-high 10 assist along with chipping in eight points in the loss.
SC State falls to 6-19 overall, 2-10 in the MEAC, while Morgan State improves to 12-10 overall, 8-2 in the conference.
A 3-pointer by Justin Black and a layup Aric Brooks put the Bears ahead four, 55-59 at the 8:17 mark in the game. Senior forward Rio Pitt powered the way along with a layup by Toombs to tie the game for the eighth time on the night, 59-59 with 6:33 left in regulation.
Black tossed in a pair of free-throws with 0:23 seconds left to extend the lead to five, 65-70 for Morgan State. Free-throws were the deciding factor down the stretch as Morgan St. shot 72% from the charity stripe hitting 16-of-22 on the night to seal the victory.
Ali Ameer also tossed in 14, while All-MEAC center Kevin Thompson was limited to 10 points and eight rebounds on the night for Morgan State.

Pirates Win Streak Halted At Four
North Carolina A&T 74, Hampton 63
GREENSBORO, N.C. -Hampton had its four-game winning streak snapped at Corbett Sports Center on Monday night, as the Pirates fell 74-63 to North Carolina A&T.
The Pirates (19-6, 9-3 MEAC) are now tied for the MEAC lead with Bethune-Cookman.
Junior guard Kwame Morgan II led the Pirates with 27 points on 10-for-21 shooting, including a 7-for-12 mark from behind the arc. Senior forward Charles Funches added 15 points and a team-high 10 rebounds, while junior guard Darrion Pellum added 12 points.
Junior forward Danny Agbelese blocked six shots.
Hampton shot 34.4 percent (22-for-64) from the floor, making eight of its 24 3-pointers and 11 of its 16 free throws.
The Aggies (12-14, 7-5 MEAC) shot 42.6 percent (20-for-47) from the floor and out-rebounded the Pirates 45-35. North Carolina A&T also out-scored Hampton 32-4 off the bench. Underwood led the way with 16 points off the bench, while Coleman added 14 points and a team-high 13 rebounds.
The Aggies shot 48.0 percent (12-for-25) in the first half to 43.3 percent shooting (13-for-30) for the Pirates. Pellum and Morgan each had 12 points in the first half, with Funches adding 10.
Underwood led North Carolina A&T with nine points at the half.

Hornets' Rally Falls Short At Florida A&M
Florida A&M 69, Delaware State 63
Tallahassee, Fla. (Feb. 14, 2011) --- Delaware State cut a 14-point second deficit to three before falling to Florida A&M 69-63 in a MEAC contest at the Lawson Center this evening.
The Hornets have lost two in a row and six of their last seven games to fall to 9-15 overall and 5-7 in the MEAC. The Rattlers won their fourth straight to improve to 11-14 and 6-6. DSU also lost its fourth straight road game.
The Rattlers led 62-52 before another DSU rally. Washington capped off a 9-2 Hornet run with a three-pointer to cut Florida A&M's lead to 64-61 with 2:24 to go in the game. On the ensuing possession, Stevens hit a lay up to give the Rattlers a five-point advantage.
Delaware State pulled to within three again (66-63) on a follow-up basket by Jay Threatt with 1:49 left. After Florida A&M hit one of two free throws to open up a 67-63 lead, the Hornets failed to score despite three shot attempts on their next possession.
Florida A&M closed out the scoring on a dunk by Jeremy Dean with 1:02 left.
The loss overshadowed a career-high scoring effort for Threatt, who led all players with 22 points. His performance included a career-best three 3-point field goals. Desi Washington added 16 points and Terron Stowe tallied a career-high 13 for the Hornets.
Stevens was high scorer for Florida A&M with 16 points.
