Poor First Half Leads to 66-49 Loss to Howard

Norfolk, Va. - A rough shooting performance in the first half for Norfolk State and a career night from Saadia Doyle propelled Howard to a 66-49 win over the Spartans Monday night at Joseph Echols Hall on Breast Cancer Awareness Night.
The Spartans hit just 20.8 percent in the first half and had just 12 points at the break as they fell to 8-14 overall on the season and 1-11 in the MEAC. Saadia Doyle tallied a career-high 38 points and 10 rebounds for Howard, which improved to 11-15, 7-5.
Junior Sarah Daily led the Spartans with 10 points on the night, while freshman Rachel Gordon had a team-leading seven rebounds with eight points. Junior Whitney Long tallied nine points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists. Freshman Rae Corbo led the Spartans with five assists to go along with six points.
NSU dropped its sixth game in a row with the loss.
Tamoria Holmes was the only other player in double figures for the Bison with 11 points. She also added five rebounds, five assists and two steals.
NSU hit just 28.8 percent for the game on shooting, while the Bison connected 43.5 percent, including a 12-of-22 performance in the first half. Howard also held the rebounding edge, 37-33, and was solid at the line, hitting 23-of-29 for the game.
Junior Tyisha Bridges finally got NSU on the board with a fastbreak layup, but NSU missed 11 of its first 12 shots as the Bison ran out to a 15-2 lead more than 10 minutes into the game. Gordon ended the drought with a jumper from just inside the free throw line.
Freshman Carlon Chambers hit a pair of free throws then got a basket down low to get the Spartans into double digits on the scoreboard, but the Bison stretched the lead to 21 and went into the break holding a commanding 33-12 lead. Doyle outscored the entire NSU team, 16-12, in the first half.

South Carolina State Snaps Nine-Game Losing Streak with 60-57 Win over Lady Bears

Orangeburg, S.C. - South Carolina State snapped a nine-game losing streak Monday as guard Tiara Knotts scored 23 points, including a layup with 6.7 seconds left, to lead the Lady Bulldogs past Morgan State 60-57 in a MEAC Conference game at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
Coach Doug Robertson's team, whose last win was a 47-35 home triumph over Delaware State Jan. 10, improved to 7-15 overall and 3-9 in the league.
Knotts was supported in the Lady Bulldogs effort by Tracey Flowers with nine points, including four in the last three minutes, and Trinese Fox with seven. Fannie Goodwin grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for SC State, which enjoyed a 47-34 edge on the glass.
Jamesia Smith led three Lady Bear players in double figures with 15 points. Brittany Dodson added 11 points and Erin Hawkins 10 for Morgan State, which dropped its second in a row to dip to 14-10 on the season and 8-3 in the MEAC.
South Carolina State took control early, jumping out to a 15-6 lead on a 3-pointer by reserve guard LaTeia Brailey in the opening half. The Lady Bulldogs built their lead to 11, 31-20, on a short jumper by Fox, however, the Lady Bears closed out the half with a 14-4 run to close the gap to 35-34 at the break. The visitors hit the last nine points of the period, all on 3-pointers.
SC State scored 12 of the first 16 points of the final stanza to go ahead 47-38 on the fourth 3-pointer of the game by Knotts.
Morgan State, however, roared back with a 17-8 run, capped by five straight points by Moneshia Davis, to deadlock the contest at 55-all with two minutes left in the first half.

Lady Pirates Snap A&T's Home Court Win Streak
Hampton 74, North Carolina A&T 66
Greensboro, N.C. - The Lady Pirates picked up their seventh straight win on Monday, defeating North Carolina A&T 74-66 at the Corbett Sports Center in front of a national ESPNU audience.
With the win, the Lady Pirates (19-6, 11-1 MEAC) snapped North Carolina A&T's 30-game home conference winning streak and came within one win of their second straight 20-win season. Hampton went 20-12 last season.
It also marked the first time Hampton swept the season series with North Carolina A&T since 2005.
Junior guard Choicetta McMillian led four Lady Pirates in double figures with a career-high 22 points on 5-for-11 3-point shooting. Junior guard Jericka Jenkins scored 15 points to go along with a team-high five assists, while sophomore forward Keiara Avant added 14 points and junior forward Melanie Warner scored 13 points.
After the Lady Aggies (11-12, 7-5 MEAC) opened the game with a 4-0 lead, the Lady Pirates went on a 13-2 run, punctuated at the 14:00 mark by a McMillian layup. She would add a layup at the 7:43 mark to put the Lady Pirates up 28-11, their largest lead of the first half.
Jaquayla Berry led the way with 26 points, while Scott added 11 points and King poured in 10 points to go along with 10 rebounds.

Florida A&M Too Much for Lady Hornets

Tallahassee, Fla. - Antonia Bennett had game highs of 26 points and 18 rebounds to lead Florida A&M to a 69-46 victory over Delaware State at the Lawson Center Monday evening.
Lady Hornets lost their second straight to fall to 7-17 overall and 3-9 in the MEAC. The Rattlers won their third in a row to improve to 13-11 and 8-4.
Tasia Bristow was the only Delaware State player in double figures with 10 points. Kianna Conner added nine points, while Brittany Washington led the team with 11 rebounds in the contest.
Bennett had 12 points and 12 rebounds in the first half to lead Florida A&M to a 29-22 advantage at the break.
Delaware State scored the first four points of the second half, and pulled within three, 29-26 on a steal and lay up by Deanna Harmon. Florida A&M answered with an 8-1 run and opened up a 37-27 lead on a lay up by Shekeira Copeland.
Conner hit a three-pointer and Tonya Clark added a basket to cut Florida A&M's lead to 41-36, but the Rattlers ran off the next eight points to stretch their lead to 13.
The Lady Hornets pulled to 52-43 on a three-pointer by Bristow, but Christian Rateree capped off a 9-1 Florida A&M run with a three-pointer to give the Rattlers a 61-44 lead.
Delaware State was outscored 40-24 in the second half. The Lady Hornets hit just 8 of their 29 shots from the field (27.6%) in the final 20 minutes. Florida A&M was 57.7 percent from the floor in the second half.

Four Lady Eagles in Pink Score in Double-Figures to Top Coppin State, 60-50

Durham, N.C. - For the first time during the 2010-11 campaign, four Lady Eagles netted in double-figures for North Carolina Central's second-straight win on Monday with a 60-50 victory over Coppin State in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.
NCCU (4-21) collected a total 51 points from its upperclassmen leadership. Obtaining her 11th double-double this season, senior Jori Nwachukwu poured in 19 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Junior Blaire Houston obtained 12 points. Senior Shanise Blanks and sophomore Chasidy Williams matched in scoring and rebounding, sinking 10 points and three boards apiece.
The first-half of play consisted of nine lead changes and five ties. Coppin State's Larissa Carter scored the visiting Eagles' first two points of the contest, NCCU's Williams quickly put the Lady Eagles on the board with a layup for the first tie of the game. The two teams went point-for-point until a Houston, Nwachukwu, and Blanks run placed the maroon and grey on their first main lead of the contest.
Coppin State's Shawntee Payne netted a three-point basket to pace the visitors on a short 7-point run to regain the lead, 15-12.
Coppin State was topped by Kyra Coleman with 11 points and Larissa Carter at 10 points and seven rebounds on the night. The NCCU defensive held the visiting Eagles to 32 percent from the field and 20 percent from the charity stripe.
The Lady Eagles out-rebounded the visitors 41-31, and distributed three more assist than Coppin State, 12-9.
