BALTIMORE -- Tanisha McTiller scored 22 points and hit a driving layup with 2.0 seconds remaining in regulation lifting Towson to a 61-59 victory over Coppin State on Wednesday in the Physical Education Complex.
Shawntae Payne, who led Coppin State with 14 points, hit a fallaway jumper with 21 seconds to play to tie the game at 59-59.
Towson (6-2) then got the ball into the hands of McTiller who beat a defender and converted the game-winning layup.
Coppin State (2-6) trailed by 55-43 with 3:32 to play before staging a furious comeback.
Larrisa Carter started the comeback with a layup and Payne and Carter then each added a pair of free throws to trim the lead to 55-49 with 2:02 to play.
Krystal Parnell upped the lead to 57-49 at the 1:52 mark by making two free throws, but Ashle Craig drained a three-pointer with 1:44 to play cutting the lead to 57-52.
Krystin Fields made one of two free throws for Towson to increase the margin to 58-52 with 1:21 left in the game.
Payne connected on a jumper to cut the lead to 58-54, but Parnell answered with a free throw to increase the lead to 59-54 with 1:02 left.
Payne then drilled a three-pointer to cut the lead to 59-57 and then Carter got a steal off the Towson inbounds pass to regain possession for the Eagles.
Payne then drove to the basket and pulled up for an off-balance jumper that capped the comeback and knotted the score at 59-59 with 21 seconds left.
Towson also received 11 points from Fields and 10 points from Parnell.
