South Carolina State Rides Big Run to Down Norfolk State, 75-69

NORFOLK, Va. - Unable to fully overcome a huge early first-half deficit, the Norfolk State women's basketball team fell to South Carolina State 75-69, Monday night in MEAC play at Joseph Echols Hall.

The Bulldogs improved to 3-4 overall, 1-1 in MEAC play thanks to a 19-2 run to start the game. NSU (5-3, 1-1) made just one of its first 10 shots to fall into that early hole, although the Spartans were able to chip away and take a brief one-point lead mid-way through the second half.

Senior Whitney Long had another solid effort, posting a game-high 18 points on 8-of-19 shooting for the Spartans. Sophomore Rae Corbo added 14 points and four steals, while freshman Ebony Brown tallied 10 points.

The Bulldogs connected on 47.9 percent for the game (23-of-48) and were assisted by a 26-of-38 effort from the free-throw line, including 21-of 33 in the second half. Tiara Knotts led S.C. State with 16 points, while Cabriel Duren tallied 15.

The Spartans hit a respectable 27-of-64 from the floor (42.2 percent) but were unable to win the rebound battle, as the Bulldogs held a 40-29 edge on the boards. S.C. State committed 24 turnovers, compared to 20 for NSU.

Tracey Flowers and Trinese Fox posted 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Bulldogs, while Paris Alston had a game-high nine rebounds with nine points.

The teams combined for just five 3-pointers in the game on 11 attempts.

Lady Pirates Beat Savannah State To Extend Winning Streak

HAMPTON, Va. -Hampton won its fourth straight game on Monday, beating conference newcomer Savannah State 59-40 at the HU Convocation Center.

The Lady Pirates (6-1, 2-0 MEAC) have won 12 straight home games dating back to last season.

Senior guard Choicetta McMillian led all scorers with 22 points, going 7-for-16 from the field and 6-for-11 from 3-point range. It was her third 20-point effort in the last four games. Senior forward Melanie Warner, the reigning MEAC Player of the Week, added 12 points and eight rebounds.

Junior forward Keiara Avant pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds, while senior guard Jericka Jenkins dished out eight assists. Junior forward Ariel Phelps blocked a career-high four shots.

The Lady Pirates shot 33.3 percent (21-for-63) from the floor, while also hitting eight of their 18 3-pointers - six of which came from McMillian. Hampton also had a season-low eight turnovers, and the Lady Pirates held a 40-32 rebounding advantage.

Savannah State shot 37.2 percent (16-for-43) from the field, and was held to just eight field goals in the second half. The Tigers turned the ball over 18 times, resulting in 21 Hampton points.

Ezinne Kalu led Savannah State (4-4, 0-2 MEAC) with 15 points.

Howard Victorious Over Delaware State, 59-49

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Redshirt freshman Tierra Hawkins posted a game-high 17 points but it wasn't enough as Delaware State succumbed to Howard, 59-49, Monday evening at Burr Gymnasium.

The Lady Bison jumped out to an 11-2 lead to start the game before a 3-pointer from sophomore Tasia Bristow sparked a 10-0 DSU run, which included another Bristow trey.  The run was capped by a jumper from Hawkins at 12:47, which gave the Lady Hornets their lone lead of the game at 12-11.

Howard responded with their own 13-2 run, including six points from the free throw line, to go up, 24-14, with 6:24 left in the first half.

Freshman Chelsea Dukes drained her second 3-pointer of the game to cut the lead to six at 32-26 with 2:14 on the clock.  Redshirt sophomore Uchechi Ahaiwe put the halftime score at 36-28 with a layup in the paint before time expired.

The Lady Bison started the second half with an 8-2 stretch to go up, 44-30.  HU extended their lead to 17 at 55-38 with 8:04 remaining with a trey from Zykia Brown.

Hawkins led Del State over the final minutes; scoring DSU's seven of their next nine points to cut the lead to 10 at 57-47.  The Lady Hornets were unable to make a comeback however as time expired at 59-49.

Joining Hawkins in double figures was Dukes, who returned to action after missing four games with a concussion, with 12 points.  Hawkins and sophomore Deanna Harmon (Owings Mills, Md.) collected seven rebounds for Del State.  Hawkins also tallied two blocks on the night.

HU had three players score in double figures Tamoria Holmes (16), Saadia Doyle (16) and Zykia Brown (10).  Doyle contributed a game-high eight rebounds while Holmes dished out a game-high seven assists.
