MEAC ANNOUNCES WEEKLY BASKETBALL HONORS

 

NORFOLK, Va., December 5, 2011 - North Carolina Central's Dominique Sutton was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.  Taariq Cephas of Coppin State was named Rookie of the Week while Kendall Gray of Delaware State earned Defensive Player of the Week accolades.

Dominique Sutton (F, 6-5, 212, Sr., Durham, N.C.) averaged 16.5 points and 8.0 rebounds in back-to-back wins for the Eagles.  Against Southern Wesleyan Sutton recorded 16 points (7-of-9), five rebounds and three steals in 25 minutes of play.  He posted a double-double in a 65-46 win over North Carolina A&T with 17 points and 11 boards.  He also added three steals, two assists, and one blocked shot in the team's first conference victory of the season.

Taariq Cephas (G, 5-9, 150, Fr., Clinton, Md.) shot 63-percent from the field including 4-of-6 shots from long range as he help Coppin State to a 77-68 victory over West Virginia Teach.  He scored 24 points and finished with three assists, two steals and one rebound to help the Eagles snap a four-game losing streak. 

Kendall Gray (C, 6-10, 240, Fr., Dover, Del.) averaged 5.5 blocks and 7.5 rebounds in two wins for the Hornets last week. In a 57-43 win against Eastern Kentucky Gray fell one rebound shy of a double-double with 15 points and nine boards.  He also added five blocks and two steals while playing the entire 40 minutes.  He also recorded six blocks, six rebounds in the Hornets' 78-68 conference victory over Maryland Eastern Shore. 

Other Top Performances

Anthony Breeze (B-CU) scored 22 points with seven rebounds, four blocks and three steals in a 74-59 win over Florida A&M. 

Prince Simuel Frazier (Howard) totaled 23 points, six rebounds, six assists and seven steals in two games last week for the Bison.

Hillary Haley (UMES) recorded a double-double of 22 points and 12 rebounds in a loss to Delaware State.

Rashad Hassan (SSU) averaged 17.0 points and 5.5 rebounds to aid the Tigers to a 1-1 mark last week.

Reggie Lewis (FAMU) led the Rattlers with 10 points, shooting 50-percent from the field, with four rebounds, one assist, and one steal in 28.0 minutes against Bethune-Cookman.

Marques Oliver (DSU) averaged 15.5 points and 10.0 rebounds in a pair of wins for the Hornets last week.

Kyle O'Quinn (NSU) averaged 17.5 points, 12.5 points, 1.5 blocks and 1.5 steals to help the Spartans finish 1-1 last week.

Darrion Pellum (Hampton) helped the Pirates to a 2-1 mark last week while averaging 18.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.36 assists and 1.7 steals in 38.0 minutes per game.

Brandon Riley (SCSU) averaged 28 points, 4.5 rebounds and one steal in two non-conference losses last week for the Bulldogs.

Kevin Thompson (MSU) posted a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds with three assists, two blocks and one steal in a loss to Ohio.
