NCCU  FALLS TO #24 NORTH CAROLINA, 79-42

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - In the final contest of the calendar year, the North Carolina Central University women's basketball team suffered a 79-42 loss to No. 24 North Carolina on Friday, Dec. 30 in Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill, N.C.

In the loss, junior Chasidy Williams led in three categories with 15 points, eight rebounds and three steals.  Freshman Kabrina Truesdale collected 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals on the night, while sophomore Tiffany Gary blocked three Tar Heel shots.  Williams and Truesdale lobbed two assists each.

Three Tar Heels scored in double-figures to seal the victory.  Krista Gross finished with a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Chay Shegog scored a team-high 20 points.  Brittany Rountree, who was 3-of-5 from the long range, finished with 11 points.  Shegog also led the squad with six assists and five blocks, as Gross stole six possessions.

Howard Rolls to Seventh-Straight Victory

Teaneck, N.J --- December 30-- Howard pulled out another win to defeat Fairleigh Dickinson by 10, 66-56 on Dec 30 at Stratis Arena. HU finished the month of December with a perfect 7-0 record and improved its overall mark to 8-5 heading into the New Year.

The Bison started the contest a little rattled as FDU opened with a 10-4 run. The run was ended with a three pointer by Kara Smith at the 12:30 mark. From there, HU found momentum as Smith hit another shot behind the arc to put the Bison down by one, 10-9. Howard picked up its intensity and forced the Knights into a turnover. Following the turnover, Smith drowned a jumper which gave the Bison their first advantage of the half.

For the Bison, Brown led the game with a season-high of 19 points on shooting 8-11 from the field and 3-5 from behind the arc. Tamoria Holmes contributed 14 points, eight rebounds and four assist. Smith chipped in with a season-high of 12 points in 20 minutes of action. Nicole Deterville grabbed a game-high of nine boards to finish the match. FDU kept Saadia Doyle under double-digit scoring as she chipped in with seven points.

Coppin State Defeats Fordham, 61-60

BRONX, N.Y. -- Senior Crystal Whittington scored on a layup with three seconds remaining in regulation lifting Coppin State to a 61-60 victory over Fordham in the championship game of the Fordham Holiday Classic on Friday in Rose Hill Gym.

Jeanine Manley, who was also named to the all-tournament team, led Coppin State with a game-high 20 points and a team-high five rebounds. Whittington finished with 12 points and four rebounds and Kyra Coleman had 10 points and four rebounds.

 The Eagles (4-9) had to overcome an eight-point second-half deficit to claim the tournament title.

Coppin State responded with a 7-0 run, capped by a three-point play by Ashle Craig, that gave the Eagles a 59-57 lead with 57 seconds to play.

Abigail Corning led Fordham with 21 points, while Collins had 11 and Christina Gaskin added 10 points.

 Bethune-Cookman Makes it Two Straight with 58-49 Win Over Kent State

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Powered by scoring totals of 14 and 13 from seniors Demetria Frank and Jalisa Isaac, the Lady Wildcats (3-9) made it victories in consecutive games, defeating Kent State (1-9), 58-49, Friday at Moore Gymnasium.

Despite the suggestion of their (then) 1-8 record, Kent State proved resilient and made several pushes at a comeback late in the game, coming as close as five with just under a minute to play. The Lady Wildcats made all the right moves to secure the win, putting down the key free throws and topping KSU, 58-49, making it two in a row.

Frank led all B-CU scorers with 14, in addition to her seven steals, five assists, and six rebounds. Isaac wasn't far behind, logging 13 points, including 3-of-7 from the perimeter.

Bonnies Shoot Lights Out from 3, Down NSU 58-44

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - St. Bonaventure used 12 3-pointers, including eight by Jessica Jenkins, and  a large rebounding edge to down the Norfolk State women's basketball team, 58-44, on the second day of the Hawk Holiday Classic Friday afternoon at the Multipurpose Activity Center on the campus of Monmouth.

Jenkins hit seven treys in the first half - the Bonnies had 11 as a team in that first stanza - to open an 18-point lead at the half. NSU cut the deficit down to as much as seven midway through the second half but went cold from the floor after that point to fall to 5-7 on the season. St. Bonaventure improved to 12-2.

NSU hit just under 30 percent for the game, while St. Bonaventure connected on 44.2 percent, including 12-of-19 from beyond the arc (63.2 percent). Jenkins hit 8-of-10 for a game-high 24 points, with all her shots coming from long range.

The Spartans committed a season-low 11 turnovers and forced 26 from the Bonnies for a 16-6 edge in points off turnovers. St. Bonaventure, though, had a 43-25 advantage on the boards, with Doris Ortega and Jennie Ashton combining for 21 boards.

Senior Whitney Long was the only player in double figures for the Spartans with 10. Junior Recca Trice had eight points, and sophomores Rachel Gordon and Rae Corbo tallied seven each. Freshman Ebony Brown was named to the all-tournament team.
