Short-Handed Hornets Edged by Tennessee State

DOVER, Del. - Despite missing three starters, Delaware State put up a valiant effort before falling to Tennessee State 59-55 in a men's basketball contest in Memorial Hall this evening.

The Hornets (4-6) led 27-21 at the half, but were outscored 38-28 in the final 20 minutes.

Tennessee State's Robert Covington led all players with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Covington was 8-for-11 from the field and 6-of-7 at the free throw line. He scored 20 of TSU's 38 second half points. Patrick Miller (11) was the only other player in double figures for the Tigers (5-6).

Casey Walker led four Delaware State players in double figures with 13 points. Walker has led the Hornets, or tied for the team high, in each of the last six games. Tyshawn Bell came off the bench to add 12 points for DSU. Bell was 3-for-3 from the field (one three-pointer) and 5-of-5 at the free throw line in the contest. Amere May tallied 12 points, while Marques Oliver had 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds for the Hornets.

Delaware State played without starting guards Jay Threatt (injury) and Tahj Tate (suspension). And center Kendall Gray (injury).

SC State Falls Short To #15 Pitt 69-55

PITTSBURGH-The South Carolina State Bulldogs (4-7) fell short of knocking off a nationally ranked team this season, as #15 Pitt (10-1) knocked off SC State 69-55 Saturday in non-conference play at Peterson Events Center.

Senior guard Brandon Riley finished with a game-high 21 points to lead the Bulldogs, while junior point guard Khalif Toombs chipped in 16 in the loss. Red-shirt sophomore Shaquil Barber added 12 points and five rebounds off the bench.

The Panthers jumped out to a quick 18-15 lead off a dunk by J.J. Moore at the 10:01 mark in the first half. Riley nailed a 3-pointer to put the Bulldogs ahead 20-18 with 6:04 left in the half. Talib Zanna's layup sparked a 7-0 run for Pitt to extend the lead to 27-20.

Riley hit a driving layup and Barber tossed in a pair of key free throws to cut the lead to three, 29-26 with 0:28 seconds left in the half. Freshman center Malcolm Gilbert made the highlight of the night throwing down a monster dunk off a missed 3-pointer by Lamar Patterson as time expired to give Pitt a 31-26 lead halftime.

The Panthers out-rebounded the Bulldogs 21-11 in the first half.

Akron Zips by Rattlers, 91-69

AKRON, Ohio - The Florida A&M Men's Basketball team outscored Akron in the second half as the Zips defeated the Rattlers, 91-69 here Saturday evening at Rhodes Arena.

FAMU (2-9) had four Rattlers to score in double-figures as D'Andre Bullard scored a team high 13 points, followed by Avery Moore with 12 points, while both Reggie Lewis and Yannick Crowder finished 11 points each.  Jeremy Dean led the Rattlers on the boards with 10 rebounds.

The Rattlers finished the first half shooting 21.9 percent (seven -of-32), while the Zips shot 63.3 percent (19-of-30)as the Akron went into the break with a 48-19 lead.

Akron (5-5) was paced by C.J. Oldham with a team high 16 points, followed by Nikola Cvetionovic with a double-double as he scored 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.  Zeke Marshall added 13 points, while both Demetrius Treadwell and Adedeji finished with 13 points apiece.

Pirates Loose Third Straight at Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Hampton dropped its third straight game on Saturday night, as the Pirates fell to Liberty 74-65 at the Vines Center.

Sophomore center David Bruce led the Pirates with a career-high 20 points to go along with a team-high nine rebounds. Senior guard Mike Tuitt was the only other Pirate in double figures with 14 points.

Hampton (4-7) took an early 5-4 lead after a 3-point play from Tuitt at the 15:47 mark of the first half, but Liberty went on an 11-0 run to take a 15-5 lead with 11:55 left in the half after Jesse Sanders nailed a jumper.

The Pirates closed to within four on a few occasions in the first half - the latest at the 2:21 mark after Bruce sank a layup to cut Liberty's lead to 28-24, but the Flames used an 8-1 run to take a 34-25 lead at the 1:04 mark after a John Caleb Sanders jumper.

Liberty went into the half up 34-27.

UMES Battles From 10-point Deficit to Lose 64-60

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Trailing by as much as 12 points in the game, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore cut within one point of the lead late in the game but would fall to Air Force 64-60 Saturday night. Three Hawks tallied double figures, while Pina Guillaume marked his first 12-point 11-rebound performance of the season.

Air Force managed its largest lead of the night with 10:06 remaining in the first period, but UMES continued to battle with the Falcons and would trail by just 10 points at halftime.

In his debut game, Ron Spencer had a game-high six offensive boards and finished with eight total rebounds.

Spencer not only helped the defense, but his 4-of-8 (.500) shooting from the files and 3-of-5 (.600) certainly boosted the Hawks offensive production.
