PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore athletics program is pleased to announce that a new coach will be leading the men's and women's tennis programs this season. After much thought and consideration, the hiring committee has selected Dr. James Heimdal as the new coach of the UMES tennis program.
"I'm excited about getting started," said Heimdal. "I have coached all of my life and played tennis for over 40 years. It's an opportunity that I have been waiting awhile for."
Heimdal replaces Harold Fowler, who led the men's team to a MEAC Tournament berth for the first time since the conference went to two divisions in 2007. Fowler served as the head coach for two seasons as he took over the reins of the program halfway through the 2009 season.
Although a difficult task ahead, Heimdal is certain that he can resurrect the Hawks' tennis program.
The new philosophy that Heimdal is looking to instill in his players is one that aims at bringing more dedication to the sport. It also incorporates the idea of letting student-athletes have a major role in all team related decisions.
