Florida A&M Defeats Southern Miss, 77-66

HATTIESBURG, Ms (Nov. 29) - The FAMU Lady Rattlers (2-4, 0-0 MEAC) got back on the winning track by defeating the University of Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (2-4, 0-0 C-USA), 77-66 tonight at the Reed-Green Coliseum in Hattiesburg.

The Rattlers were led by a strong performance from Qiana Donald, who carded a double-double of 20 points and 17 rebounds. FAMU got well-rounded scoring from a trio of other players in double figures. Kimberly Sparkman and Antonia Bennett poured in 15 points each, while Tameka McKelton chipped in 13 points. Bennett would also grab nine rebounds.

The Lady Rattlers shot 41.8 percent from the field, including 37.5 percent from three-point range. They shot 78.9 percent from the free throw line and grabbed 52 rebounds as a team (24 off./28 def.).

For the Golden Eagles, they were led by Tanecka Carey with 16 points. Rounding out the trio in double figures was Jamierra Faulkner with 15 points and Sedreka Plummer with 10. Carey chipped in six rebounds for USM.

The Golden Eagles shot 39.7 percent from the field for the game. They also shot 23.5 percent from three-point range, 40 percent from the free throw line and grabbed 39 rebounds.

Post Play Too Much For NCCU In 16-Point Loss To Presbyterian

CLINTON, S.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) - While North Carolina Central University junior Chasidy Williams gave an impressive second-half performance to achieve her third double-double of the season, a first-half 11-point lead and 36 points in the paint provided Presbyterian the footing needed for 64-48 victory over the Lady Eagles on Tuesday, Nov. 29 in Clinton, S.C.

Williams, who ended the first 20 minutes of play with six points and three rebounds, concluded the night with 22 points and 11 rebounds, as senior Blaire Houston and junior Jasmine Alston, who was 3-of -7 from behind the arc, finished with nine points apiece.  Williams collected the only steals of the night with four, while she and Houston circulated two assists each.  Sophomore Alesha Jenkins pulled down six rebounds, as freshman Jamara Malone attained a career-high three rebounds over four minutes of play.

On the night, the Lady Eagles were 33 percent from the field on 16-of-49 shooting, 4-of-14 from behind the arc, and 75 percent from the charity stripe, 12-of-16. 

Mariah Pietrowski led the Blue Hose with 19 points, as Davis added 16 points in the win.  Sherece Smith paced the rebounding campaign with nine rebounds and David assisted in the effort by pulling down seven boards.  In the home contest, Presbyterian was 49 percent from the field on 27-of-55, 3-of-11 from the long range, and 70 percent from the free-throw line, 7-of-10.

On the season, the maroon and gray drops to 1-6, while the Blue Hose advance to 3-4 on the season and obtains their first win of the all-time series 2-1.

Savannah State Downs Jacksonville in Overtime, 67-64

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Ezinne Kalu scored 27 points and dished out seven assists to lead Savannah State to a 67-64 overtime victory over Jacksonville in Tiger Arena.

The Dolphins (0-6) led 30-28 at the half but increased their advantage to six early in the second period.

Trailing 39-33, SSU rallied with eight unanswered points to take a 41-39 lead with 12 minutes remaining when Jazmin Thomas hit a jumper.

The game would be close the rest of the way with no team leading by more than three points.

Tied at 54 with 2:39 left in regulation, Crystal Bell hit a free throw for the Dolphins while Uba Blessing made a layup for SSU for a 56-55 lead.

A layup by Alisha Nelson put SSU ahead 58-55 with 43 seconds remaining but JU sent the game into an extra period when Abril Peeples nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Kalu and Nelson both made field goals early in the extra period to give the Lady Tigers a 62-58 lead with 3:34 on the clock.

Jacksonville tied the game at 62 with 2:06 remaining but four free throws by Kalu put SSU ahead for good with a 66-62 lead with 18 seconds left.

Bell hit a free throw for JU with 11 seconds left but another free throw by Kalu gave the Lady Tigers a 67-64 lead with four seconds remaining. Peebles, who scored 11 points, missed a potential game tying 3-pointer for the Dolphins at the buzzer.

Nelson added 14 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks for SSU (4-2) while Jasmine Kirkland chipped in 11 points.
