MEAC ANNOUNCES WEEKLY BASKETBALL HONORS

 

NORFOLK, Va., November 28, 2011 - North Carolina Central's Ray Willis was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.  Tahj Tate of Delaware State was named Rookie of the Week while Norfolk State's Kyle O'Quinn earned Defensive Player of the Week accolades.

Ray Willis (G, 6-6, 164, Jr., Atlanta, Ga.) averaged 22.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 2.0 blocks and 2.0 steals to lead North Carolina Central to a pair of non-conference wins last week.  Against Morris College Willis shot perfectly from the field (8-of-8) and connected on 80-percent (8-of-10) of his shots from the charity stripe.  He also recorded four assists, four steals, three boards and two blocks in the 112-50 victory for the Eagles.  He followed up with a 19 point, nine rebound performance against Barber-Scotia College in 25 minutes of play. 

Tahj Tate (G, 6-4, 200, Fr., Easley, S.C.) recorded back-to-back double digit outings with 18 points against Philadelphia Biblical College and 17 points against Wagner last week.  He shot 58-percent (14-of-24) from the field and 75-percent (3-of-4) from behind the arc in the two games.  He also recorded four rebounds, four assists, two steals and one blocked shot to lead the Hornets to a 1-1 finish last week.

Kyle O'Quinn (C, 6-10, 240, Sr., Jamaica, N.Y) recorded back-to-back double doubles averaging 12.0 rebounds to go along with 16.5 points per game.  He grabbed 13 boards against #16 Marquette along with two blocks and one steal.  He added 11 rebounds and five blocked shots in a 70-63 win over Eastern Kentucky. 

Other Top Performances

David Bruce (Hampton) averaged 11.3 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 1.0 blocks to help the Pirates finish 1-2 at the 2011 Cancun Challenge.

Ian Chiles (MSU) totaled 34 points, 11 rebounds, seven blocks and four assists in three games last week for the Bears.

Landon Clement (NCCU) scored 30 points against Barber Scotia College and became the seventh player in school history to hit 130 career 3-pointers hitting 7-of-13 shots from long range.

Yannick Crowder (FAMU) recorded back-to-back double doubles with 12 points and 10 boards against Southern and 11 points and 11 rebounds against Western Illinois for the Rattlers.

Rashad Hasaan (SSU) was named to the Hoosier Classic All-Tournament Team after tallying 40 points, 21 boards, three assists, two blocks and one steal to help the Tigers finish 1-2 for the week.

Kendall Gray (DSU) averaged 4.5 blocks in two games and helped DSU set a team record of 15 blocks against Wagner. 

Tony Gallo (CSU) finished with 21 points and six assists versus Connecticut and 17 points and eight assists against Purdue in two non-conference games for the Eagles. 

Avery Moore (FAMU) scored a combined 45 points, with two rebounds, three assists and three steals in three non-conference games last week for the Rattlers.

Prince Okoroh (Howard) recorded a career-high 15 points with three rebounds, four steals, two assists and one block against Rider. 

Darrion Pellum (Hampton) averaged 24.3 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists and was named to the 2011 Mayan Division Cancun Challenge All-Tournament Team last week. 

Ishaq Pitt (UMES) scored 16 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals in 29 minutes of play against Portland State.

Mike Phillips (Howard) recorded a total of 15 points and 15 rebounds off the bench in two non-conference games last week for the Bison.

Brandon Riley (SCSU) scored 25 points, with four rebounds, three assists and three steals in a 104-98 overtime win against Kennesaw State.

Omar Sanders (SCSU) collected two double-doubles last week with 10 points and 10 rebounds against Baylor and 28 points and 13 rebounds against Kennesaw State. 

Kam Shepherd (NCAT) posted a double-double performance of 11 points and 10 rebounds with three blocks, two assists and one steal in 16 minutes of play against Johnson & Wales.

Nic Simpson (NCAT) recorded two double digit performances of 12 and 14 points in two non-conference wins last week for the Aggies.

Dominique Sutton (NCCU) averaged 16.5 points and 9.0 rebounds in two wins last week for the Eagles.

Calvin Thompson (Howard) connected on 86 percent (18-of-21) of his free-throws as he averaged 19.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals in a loss to Rider and a win over William & Mary. 

Kevin Thompson (MSU) became the third player in school history to post 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds as he capped a three-game non-conference week averaging 18.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.0 blocks.

Jay Threatt (DSU) totaled 18 points, seven rebounds, 11 assists and seven steals in two non-conference games last week for the Hornets.  He set the school record for career steals in a game against Philadelphia Biblical College.

Percy Woods (UMES) shot 51-percent from the field (22-of-43) and averaged 14.5 points and 3.3 rebounds in four non-conference games for the Hawks last week.
