North Carolina A&T Defeats Clemson, 76-66GREENSBORO-North Carolina A&T took on the ACC's Clemson Tigers, and defeated the power conference squad 76-66, powered by a career-high 26 points from King and 18 points by guard Amber Calvin.
Sophomore Forward Tracy King collected two 3-point plays and went 10-for-12 at the free throw line in Monday's win. It was her 12th career game with double figures.
Junior JaQuayla Berry also had 12 points in the game, and junior Nikia Gorham had 13 rebounds in the contest, which was attended by 852 loud and enthusiastic fans. Calvin stayed hot from downtown, nailing four of her five 3-point attempts.
N.C. A&T led by as many as 13 in the second half. But Clemson pulled within three points, three different times in the last three minutes of the game. The final time came at the 1:38 mark when Shaniqua Pauldo hit two free throws to make it 67-64. The Aggies then turned to junior center Nikia Gorham who hit a fade away baseline jumper to put the Aggies ahead by five. Two consecutive Aggie steals led to a free throw and a King layup to put the Aggies in front 72-64 with a minute remaining.
Berry had a strong second half, collecting eight points, while King added 12 to her total. A&T had a strong second half, committing just six turnovers. They had 18 total in the contest, compared to 22 by Clemson.

Spartan Offense Runs Wild in 94-81 Win over USC Upstate
Junior Recca Trice set the Division I record for assists and the Norfolk State women's basketball team tallied its most points in regulation in nearly 13 years in a 94-81 victory over USC Upstate Monday night at the G.B. Hodge Center.
NSU used a big 22-2 run midway through the second half to pull away from USC Upstate, as NSU shot 53.1 percent for the game on 34-of-64 shooting. Sophomore Rachel Gordon had a career-high 25 points with 12 rebounds for the Spartans, the fourth straight game and seventh in the last nine games dating back to last season she has reached double digits in boards. Trice had 14 assists, breaking her own D-I record of 12 set two years ago.
NSU last scored at least 94 points in regulation on Jan. 9, 1999 in a 97-62 win over South Carolina State at home.

Lady Hawks Lose Close Defensive Battle To Canisius
The Lady Hawks continue to fight through growing pains as they fell to Canisius in a two point defensive battle 45-43 at the W.P. Hytche Center. UMES began the game with a 7-2 run blitzing the Griffs with their up-tempo intense defense. The Lady Hawks last lead of the half would come at the 10:02 mark at 14-13. Canisius went on a 12-0 run to gain the lead behind the low post play of sophomore forward Jamie Ruttle. Ruttle, who tallied 16 points and eight rebounds for the game, scored 12 of her points in the first half. The Griffs would build a sizeable lead, but the Lady Hawks used 8-8 free throw shooting to battle back and finish the half trailing 23-38.
The second half began and was a powerful defensive battle. UMES charted a team season high four blocks and six steals. With a basket hard to come by, Chelsea Sanders gave her team a boost offensively finishing with a season high 15 points and 8 rebounds. Junior Kwinnyata Mercer added nine points shooting 3-6 from behind the arc. Canisius would make their presence felt in the frontcourt scoring 30 points in the paint and forcing 19 turnovers.
The Lady Hawks would continue to use free throw shooting and rebounding to cut down the Griffs second half lead. UMES shot 11-14(78.6%) from the free-throw line in the second half and 19-22(86.4%) for the game. They would go on to out-rebound the Griffs 43-41 with the help of Sanders' eight rebounds and senior Amber Cook's six rebounds. Cook's rebounds would also place her over 300 rebounds for her career at UMES.
