Lady Hawks Fall In Season Opener To Mount St. Mary's

Chelsea Sanders finished with 13 points and 7 rebounds to lead Maryland Eastern Shore Lady Hawks as they fell to Mount St. Mary's 63-44, Tuesday night in the season opener here at W.P. Hytche Athletic Center. The Lady Hawks opened the game with a 10-7 run sparked by a three-pointer from Chelsea Sanders. The Mount began an 18-2 run of their own behind the play of sophomore Jessie Kaufman.

Mount St. Mary's finished the first half with a 33-19 lead, shooting 41.2% (14-34) from the field and 40% (4-10) from behind the arc. The Lady Hawks were held to just 29.6% shooting going 8-27 from the field in the first half.

Kaufman continued to lead the Mount to a 63-44 finish with 19 points and 6 rebounds.

The Lady Hawks continued to fight with help from the bench play of sophomore Shanyce Stewart who tallied 11 rebounds. Senior Adobi Agbasi showed her aggressiveness defensively recording 2 blocks but the Mount shot 44.8% (26-58) from the field and 46.7% (7-15) from three-point range to close out the game.

Aggie Cruise to Win Over Virginia Union

Breakdown:  The Aggies (1-2) collected their first win of the season in striking fashion, defeating Virginia Union 103-61 at Corbett Sports Center on Tuesday. It was the first time the Aggies scored in triple figures since Feb. 16, 2008, when they defeated UMES, 105-79. 

N.C. A&T had five players collect double-digit points in the contest, led by sophomore guard Mikala Scott, who had 20 points.

The Aggies shot a season-high 54.5 percent from the field, and made a season-high 36 percent of their 3-point attempts.  The Panthers shot just 30 percent from the field and 16.7 percent from beyond the arc.  The Aggies also did well from the free throw line, hitting 27 of their 34 attempts.  The Panthers had 38 turnovers in the game, off which the Aggies had 51 points.  N.C. A&T also scored 52 of their 103 points in the paint.   N.C. A&T also did a tremendous job of pressuring the Panthers, collecting a season-high 22 steals in the contest.  The Aggies also had a season-high 48 rebounds in the game, 19 of which were offensive. 

Sophomore Mikala Scott had a tremendous game for the Aggies, leading the team with 20 points, going 8-for-12 from the field.  She also ended the game with three steals and three assists, all in just 18 minutes of work.  It was her 14th career double-digit scoring game, and the sixth time in her career that she led the team in scoring.

Delaware State Cruises By Wesley, 85-53

DOVER, Del. - Four Lady Hornets scored in double figures and were once again led by redshirt freshman Tierra Hawkins as the Delaware State defeated in-town rival, Wesley College, 85-53, Tuesday evening at Memorial Hall.

The Lady Hornets (2-0), who averaged 53.1 points during the 2010-11 season, had career nights from Hawkins and redshirt sophomore Uchechi Ahaiwe, who each posted double doubles in the victory. 

Hawkins, who recorded 21 points and 11 rebounds against Wilmington on Saturday, finished the night with 22 points and 12 rebounds while Ahaiwe contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds.  Ahaiwe, who averaged 0.8 points in 21 games last season, previously had a career-high of 10 points and eight rebounds, set in Saturday's win over the Wildcats.  Prior to this season, her career-high was five points, set on Nov. 24, 2010.

Also joining Ahaiwe and Hawkins in double figures were freshman Chelsea Dukes (Baltimore, Md.) with 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting and 3-for-5 from behind the three-point arc and sophomore Deanna Harmon (Owings Mills, Md.) with 12 points and five assists.

The Wolverines (0-1) were led in scoring by Jazmine Miller's 17 points.  Heather Fuller and Rachelle Allen added five rebounds for Wesley.
