Lady Pirates Open Season With Rout Of Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Hampton opened the 2011-12 season in style on Saturday, upending the University of Pittsburgh 60-37 at the Petersen Events Center.

Dating back to last season, the Lady Pirates (1-0) have won 15 of their last 16 games.

Senior guard Choicetta McMillian led the Lady Pirates with 22 points, thanks in large part to a 6-for-15 effort from behind the arc. Senior forward Melanie Warner poured in 12 points and was two rebounds shy of a double-double.

Junior forward Ariel Phelps added 10 points to go along with a team-high nine rebounds.

The Lady Pirates shot 31.3 percent (20-for-64) from the floor, but also made 10 of their 25 3-pointers (40.0 percent) and 10 of 14 free throws (71.4 percent). Hampton also held a decisive 46-35 edge in rebounding.

Pitt, despite shooting just 21.4 percent in the first half, wound up shooting 31.4 (16-for-51) percent for the game. The Panthers (0-1) turned the ball over 22 times and made just four of their 12 free throws (33.3 percent).

Logan led Pitt with 12 points.

Bethune-Cookman's Isaac Back In Full Effect As B-CU Silences Ave Maria

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Jalisa Isaac's first official shot in over a year, and her second, and then her third, made for a promising start to Bethune-Cookman's 2011-12 season as the Lady Wildcats downed Ave Maria, 74-52, Saturday in Richard V. Moore Gymnasium.

Making her return to the court after missing last season to a knee injury, Isaac scored a game-high 19 points. The senior from New Smyrna Beach hit her first three, and then bookended the afternoon by sinking her last shot, a jumper with 1:52 remaining.

Jasmine Elum, emerging more and more as another go-to scorer, came on strong down stretch as B-CU pulled away from a 55-49 lead over the final 7:13. The junior scored 12 of her 18 points in the second half.

Khalilah Quigley was 4-4 from the field, including three from three-point range for the forward, and finished with 15 points. Sharnese Neal and Amber Antoine each had seven points and seven rebounds.

B-CU outrebounded Ave Maria 51-31, but 25 turnovers and foul trouble hampered the Lady Wildcats.

Robert Morris Beats Coppin State

 MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Josetta Campbell scored 15 points leading four players in double figures as Robert Morris defeated Coppin State 67-42 on Saturday in the Eagles season opener in the Sewall Center.

The Eagles trailed only 31-29 at halftime, but were limited to 19.2 percent shooting in the second half and were outscored 31-18.

Kyra Coleman led Coppin State with 11 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the floor, while Crystal Whittington and Bria Harris each had seven points.

Campbell was 6-of-10 from the field and made 3-of-6 from the three-point line to lead the Patriots. Artemis Spanou had 12 points and 13 rebounds, while April Williams scored 12 points and Mary Durojaye added 11 points.

A jumper by Jaleah Holsey and three free throws by Larrisa Carter brought the Eagles to within 45-43 with 8:26 to play in the game, but Robert Morris responded with an 8-0 run that increased the lead to 53-43 with 3:49 remaining.

Jeanine Manley made two free throws to cut the lead to 53-45, but Robert Morris closed the game by outscoring the Eagles 9-2.

Hawkins Dominates As DSU Crushes Wilmington, 80-32, In Season-Opener

DOVER, Del. - In her first game wearing a Delaware State uniform, redshirt freshman Tierra Hawkins recorded a double double of 21 points and 10 rebounds as the Lady Hornets cruised by Wilmington University, 80-32, in their season-opener Saturday afternoon at Memorial Hall.

Hawkins finished the day on 9-of-20 shooting and 3-for-6 from the charity stripe in addition to three blocks, two assists and two steals in 28 minutes of play.

Joining Hawkins in double digits were sophomore Deanna Harmon, with 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting and 2-for-3 from behind the arc, and redshirt sophomore Uchechi Ahaiwe with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Sophomore Tasia Bristow chipped in eight points, seven steals and five assists in the victory.

All 10 players on DSU's active roster saw playing time and scored at least two points.

The Lady Hornets rewrote numerous historical statistical categories as they collected over 50 rebounds (51) for the first time since 2008 when they tallied 56 against Cheyney.  Additionally, they recorded 22 steals, their most since Jan. 8, 2011 when they had 17 against North Carolina Central.  The last time Del State won by more than 40 points was in 2009 when they posted a score of 84-28 over Lincoln (Pa.) and the last time they allowed less than 40 points was on Jan. 9, 2010 in a 57-39 win over Winston-Salem State.

The Wildcats were lead in scoring by Cari Callaway and Erin Moore, each contributing five points.  Courtney Coleman and Amanda Walters each added three rebounds in the effort.

Del State held Wilmington to just 19 percent shooting on the night (8-for-42) while shooting 44.1 percent themselves (30-for-68).
