Lady Pirates Upend Coppin State In Four Sets

HAMPTON, Va. -Hampton beat Coppin State 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-16, 25-14) at Holland Hall on Wednesday night to remain undefeated in MEAC play.

The Lady Pirates (7-8, 2-0 MEAC) have now won five of their last six matches.

The Lady Pirates hit a season-best .233 as a team, recording 44 kills and just 14 errors in 129 total attacks. Hampton's best set was the third, when the Lady Pirates hit .286 (14 kills, four errors in 25 kills) - while Hampton hit .276 (nine kills, one error in 29 attacks) in the fourth set.

Hampton also held a 12-8 edge in service aces.

Coppin State hit .080 as a team, marking the first time this season the Lady Pirates have held an opponent under .100. The Lady Eagles had 40 kills and 29 errors in 138 total attacks. The Lady Eagles hit a team-best .242 (13 kills, five errors in 33 attacks) in the second set.

Kristina Kraskura recorded her fifth double-double of the season, and her third straight, with a team-high 14 kills and 10 digs on defense. She hit .250 for the match, recording six errors in 32 attacks. Mianna Armstrong added 10 kills, hitting a team-best .556 because of no errors in 18 attacks.

Armstrong also had a team-high three service aces.

Ariel Richard led Coppin State with 12 kills to go along with 12 digs on defense, while Christina Epps added 10 kills. Gabrielle Otero had a team-high 17 digs.

Hawks Top Delaware State 3-0 To Open MEAC Season

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The Hawks started conference play in dominating fashion with a 3-0 shutout win over rival Delaware State, outscoring the Hornets 75-33 in the combined games.  UMES starts their campaign for its fifth straight MEAC Northern Division championship at 1-0, improving to 10-6 overall.  Delaware State falls to 1-1 in the conference and 2-12 on the season.

As a team, UMES hit .365, led by reigning MEAC Player of the Week Saitaua Iosia, who had 13 kills with no errors on 20 attacks for a hitting percentage of .650.   Ndidi Ibe got nine kills to hit .500.  Maline Vaitai got seven kills and as many digs with four total blocks, while Jessica Vicic got 31 assists with four aces and five digs.  The Hawks held the Hornets to a -.025 hitting percentage.

Edarkis Branch led the Hornets with four kills, the only player for Delaware State with more than two kills, adding seven digs.

UNCG RALLIES PASS THE EAGLES, 3-0

GREENSBORO, N.C.- Senior Emanuelle Santos continues to the lead North Carolina Central with her third double-double outing of the season in a three-set (25-14, 25-23, 25-22) loss to the Spartans of UNC Greensboro on Tuesday, Oct. 4 in Fleming Gymnasium.

Santos concluded the night leading in kills and digs, with 10 kills and 13 digs. 

Fellow senior Tasha-Gaye Richards and freshman Dayanna Arrufat collected six kills apiece.  Freshman Alice Genna and sophomore Jzima-Malaki Kalao shared in the setting campaign, Genna circulated 13 assists, while Kalao distributed 12 assists.  Arrufat and Genna served one service ace each, as Richards and Arrufat assisted on block apiece.

The mighty maroon amassed 30 kills, 40 digs and one team block.

The Spartans offense was led by Karrian Chambers, who topped the win with 12 kills.  UNCG also utilized two setters in the win, with Ari Lysacek and Emily McMurtrey fueling the offense.  Lysacek finished with 18 assists, while McMurtrey distributed 13 assists. 

The Eagles drop to 1-18 on the season, while the Spartans advance to 10-10 on the season.

Aggies Fall Short at Radford 

RADFORD, Va. - Sophomore Jeana Daniels recorded seven kills and four blocks, but Radford played a flawless match in a 3-0 (25-12, 8, 13) win over North Carolina A&T in volleyball action on Tuesday night.

Senior Bridgett McCaskill played well defensively with six digs. Radford's offense was even too much for the outstanding senior, however. The Highlanders made just eight attack errors on 71 attempts. Rachel Wiechecki led the way with 13 kills and a .522 hitting percentage.

SC State Falls to Citadel in Non-Conference Volleyball Matchup

Charleston, S.C.- SC State fell to the The Citadel, 3-0, (13-25, 22-25, 22-25) in a non-conference volleyball match in Charleston, S.C.

SC State (9-11) began the game very sluggish as Citadel opened the game with a 9-3 run and forcing the Lady Bulldogs into its first timeout of the set. The Bulldogs used a 6-1 run to increase its lead to 11 (15-4).  SC State managed to go on a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to 17-7 but it was not enough as The Citadel wins Set One 25-13.

The Lady Bulldogs was more aggressive to begin Set Two, jumping ahead 4-1.  The Citadel (7-9) quickly put their offense into motion going on a 5-0 run to jump ahead 6-4.  The Lady Bulldogs regained the momentum taking a 15-13 lead midway through the set.  The teams exchanged points for the remainder before the Citadel managed to put together a 4-0 run to close the set 25-22.

After the 10 minute intermission, SC State once again came out Sluggish as they fell behind in Set Three 12-5 midway through the set.  The Lady Bulldogs used a 10-5 run to cut the deficit to two, 17-15 and force a Citadel timeout. SC State maintained its intensity throughout the set but fell just short, dropping Set Three 25-22, and the match 3-0.

Desire Waller led the way for the Lady Bulldogs with 18 kills.  Paige Webb added eight kills while Brendell Studnicka had 10 digs and Bria Brimmer put up 32 set assists in the loss.

The Citadel was led by Kathryn Johnston nine kills.  Alexa Dahlstrom had 25 set assists in the victory.
