SC State Defeats Bethune-Cookman in MEAC Women's Volleyball Contest

Daytona Beach, Fla.- SC State picked up its sixth win in the MEACas they defeated Bethune-Cookman, 3-1 (25-19, 25-20, 22-25, 25-23), in a conference match at Moore Gymnasium.  The Lady Bulldogs had one of their best defensive outings as they had four players with double-digit digs and 10 team blocks.

Desire Waller and Tiffané Jackson led the team offensively with 13 and 10 kills respectively.  Waller recorded a double-double as she picked up 15 digs in the contest to go along with three total blocks (1 solo-2 assists).  E. Paige Webb had nine kills and 14 digs with two block assists while Shabree Roberson had nine kills with four total blocks (1 solo-3 assists). Melissa Robinson had a team-high 18 digs and Brendell Studnicka rounded out the quad of double-digit dig recipients with 10.  Jackson also contributed four block assists as SC State improved to 15-13 overall and 6-1 in the MEAC.

Krysta Gardner put down a game-high 22 kills and Jennifer Jimenez picked up a game-high 20 digs as Bethune-Cookman fell to 10-15 overall and 3-3 in the MEAC.  Janeen Davis also had double-kills with 18 kills for the Lady Wildcats in the loss.

Lady Rattlers down Savannah State, 3-0

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Oct. 30) - The Florida A&M Volleyball picked up their sixth conference win of the season as they defeated the MEAC newest member Savannah State, 3-0 (25-8, 25-17, 25-14) Sunday afternoon at the Al Lawson Center.

FAMU (8-12, 6-1 MEAC) had a pair of Lady Rattlers to finish in double-digit kills as Katherine Huanec finished with a team high 12 kills, followed by Maria Ceccarelli with 11 kills.  Diana Gonzales led the Lady Rattlers in assists with 36, while Karol Marquez led the team in digs with 20.

SSU (0-21, 0-6 MEAC) was led by Bryana Gadis with a team high with five kills, followed by Bianca Helton with three kills.  Ashlee Butler led the Lady Tigers in assists with 10, while Bridgette Stephens led the team in digs with 11.

NSU Completes Season Sweep of Coppin State, 3-0

BALTIMORE-Juniors Charlotte Armstead and Beatriz Ferreira combined for 25 kills to lead the Norfolk State volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over Coppin State on Sunday at the Physical Education Complex. The Spartans swept the season series from the Eagles with the win and kept alive their MEAC tournament hopes.

Ferreira led the Spartans with 13 kills, while Armstead added 12, and the duo combined to hit .455 for the match. NSU hit .304 overall, compared to .177 for the Eagles.

Junior Kristen Burt led all players with 30 assists and had a team-high six digs to go along with five kills, while junior Megan Lavo and senior Tracey Copley each added five digs. Armstead posted a match-high four blocks.

Coppin State was led by Ariel Richard with 14 kills and seven digs and Salena Weekly with eight kills. Krisine Bindule posted 27 assists, and Gabrielle Otero had a match-high 10 digs. As a team, Coppin State had a 28-27 edge in digs over the Spartans, while NSU recorded six blocks to just three for the Eagles.

Lady Pirates Fall To Morgan State In Five Sets

HAMPTON, Va. -Hampton staged a furious comeback in Holland Hall on Sunday, but fell short as Morgan State won 3-2 (25-22, 25-17, 19-25, 23-25, 15-13) to take second place in the conference.

The Lady Pirates fell to 10-12 overall on the season, and 5-4 in MEAC play, while Morgan State, with its fifth straight win, improved to 8-17 overall and 6-3 in conference play to jump to second place in the MEAC Northern Division.

Krista Kraskura and  Mianna Armstrong each recorded double-doubles for the Lady Pirates; Kraskura got her eighth of the season, with a team-high 22 kills and 18 digs on defense, while Armstrong recorded her sixth with 21 kills and a career-high 28 digs.

Kraskura also hit a team-best .268 for the match, while Armstrong hit .254.

Elkayam also had a double-double, tallying a team-high 38 assists and 13 digs. Sophomore Sheileen Pagan added 23 digs on defense.

Janelle Wilson led four Lady Bears in double figures in kills with 14, while Erin Cox added 13 kills. Kierra Outlin and Zuri Smith each added 12 kills.

Comeback Halted As Howard Tops Del State, 3-1

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Junior Laisha Davis collected 11 kills Sunday afternoon as the Delaware State was unable to make a comeback and lost, 3-1 (31-29, 19-25, 9-25, 26-28) to Howard at Burr Gymnasium.

The Hornets (3-18, 2-6 MEAC) held a 15-10 lead over the Lady Bison (5-20, 4-4 MEAC) in set one before HU rallied to go up, 23-20.  With Howard up, 25-24, Jasmine King posted a service error to tie things up.  The two teams exchanged points and the lead changed hands five times before consecutive kills from Davis gave DSU a 31-29 win.

In set two, the Bison went up, 11-5 and never looked back.  Del State came within two at 10-12, but Howard went on a 9-1 run to lead, 21-11.  Kills from senior Jessica Barnes and Davis in addition to two attack errors from Tosin Elebute pulled the Hornets within 18-24 to force a HU timeout.  Coming out of the timeout, Elebute recorded another error but countered with a kill to give the Lady Bison a 25-19 victory.

Howard took a 13-1 run and a .650 attack percentage to close out Del State, 25-8, in set three.  The set saw a -.095 attack percentage from the Hornets, including six errors to just one for the Lady Bison.

Set four saw numerous lead changes similar to set one.  A kill from sophomore Jessica Croucher and attack error from Kelley Butler gave DSU their largest lead of the set at 16-11.  Three consecutive kills from Elebute turned the tides for Howard and gave them a 23-21 lead to force a Del State timeout.  Four kills from Davis tied things at 25-25.  An attack error from Elebute gave the Hornets a 26-25 lead but HU responded with a 3-0 run to win, 28-26.

Jessica Croucher collected a game-high 16 digs while junior Bel Fakaosi contributed a team-high 24 assists.

Eagles Claim Bragging Rights In Three-Set Win Over Aggies

GREENSBORO, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) - In their second matchup of the season, the Eagles of North Carolina Central seized another three-set (25-22, 25-13, 25-14) win over the Aggies of North Carolina A&T State University on Sunday, Oct. 30 at the Corbett Sports Center in Greensboro, N.C.

Sunday's contest advances NCCU to 2-0 over N.C. A&T this season, 3-21 overall and 3-3 in MEAC play.

After three-sets of play, freshman and senior duo Dayanna Arrufat and Shantel Moore led the offensive effort with Arrufat tallying 14 kills and Moore gathering 10 kills.  Sophomore Jzima-Malaki Kalao directed the offense with 30 assists in the win.  Senior Emmanuelle Santos continues to pivotal force the mighty maroon, in this match Santos led in digs with nine, while Arrufat gathered one solo block.

Jenae Daniels was the lone Aggie to obtain double-figure kills with 10, while Chelsea Fox circulated 18 assists.  Fox also led the defense with five digs, as Andrea Evans assisted on three blocks and collected two solo blocks.

Despite taking 75 attempts, the Aggies could only gather 25 kills on 15 errors, while amassing 21 assists and 20 digs.  N.C. A&T was able to overpower NCCU in blocks gathering five team blocks to the Eagles' two.
