Bethune-Cookman Snaps Losing Streak With Win Over Savannah State

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Krysta Gardner had 14 kills and Linda Nwabuko had 10 kills and five service aces as Bethune-Cookman snapped a five-match losing streak with a 3-0 (25-6,25-15,25-10) Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over Savannah State Friday in historic Moore Gymnasium.

Gardner registered her 700th career kill in the second set as B-CU (10-15 overall, 4-2 MEAC South) hit .423 as a team. Janeen Davis added nine kills while Aubrianna Curtis had 28 assists and Jennifer Jimenez 14 digs.

Savannah State fell to 0-21 and 0-6.

Lady Pirates Beat Coppin State In Five Sets

BALTIMORE-Hampton got back into the win column Friday night, beating Coppin State 3-2 (25-23, 25-14, 23-25, 18-25, 16-14) at the Physical Education Complex.

The Lady Pirates improved to 10-11 overall on the season and 5-3 in conference play to remain in a tie for second place with Morgan State in the MEAC Northern Division. Coppin State fell to 5-19 overall and 1-7 in conference play.

Hampton hit .052 as a team, with 42 kills and 33 errors in 173 total attacks. The Lady Pirates hit a team-best .208 (10 kills, five errors in 24 attacks) in the fifth set, while also hitting .207 in the second set, thanks to nine kills and three errors in 29 attacks

Coppin State hit just .021 as a team, recording 52 kills and 48 errors in 194 total attacks. The Lady Eagles hit a team-best .154 (13 kills, seven errors in 39 attacks) in the fourth set.

Ariel Richard and Christina Epps each had 15 kills for Coppin State, while Vanity Massey added 10 kills.

Lady Rattlers blanks South Carolina State, 3-0 

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Oct. 28) - Florida A&M avenged their Sept. 30 lost to South Carolina State as they defeated the Lady Bulldogs, 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 27-25) Friday evening at the Al Lawson Center.

FAMU (7-12, 5-1 MEAC) was paced by Maria Ceccarelli with a team high 14 kills, followed by Marija Jovanovic with 13.  Diana Gonzalez led the Lady Rattlers in assists with 37, while Karol Marquez led the team in digs with 17.

SCSU (14-13, 5-1 MEAC) was led by Desire Waller with a team high kills.    Brimmer led the Lady Bulldogs in assists with 37, while Melissa Robinson finished with a team nine digs.

Morgan State Wins Intense Match over NSU, 3-2

NORFOLK, Va. - Despite a career night from junior Beatriz Ferreira, Morgan State won an intense back-and-forth match over Norfolk State, 3-2, Friday evening at Gill Gymnasium. The Bears rallied back from a 2-1 deficit and overcame several NSU leads for the big victory.

NSU fell to 7-13 overall but also 3-5 in MEAC play with just four conference matches left in the season. Morgan State continued to solidify its position in the league with its fourth-straight win, improving the Bears to 7-17, 5-3.

Ferreira had 24 kills on the night, just two away from tying the school record, and hit .396, but NSU as a team hit just .171, done in by 34 attack errors. Morgan State, meanwhile, attacked at a .268 clip with just 18 attack errors in the five-set match.

Junior Charlotte Armstead and freshman Adriana Ramos added 12 and 11 kills, respectively, while Ramos was one of three Spartans in double figures in digs with 13. Senior Tracey Copley had 14 digs, with junior Paige Gary-Canty adding 10. Junior Kristen Burt had 46 assists with six digs, while Armstead also tallied four blocks.

As a team, NSU had a 60-48 edge in digs, while Morgan State doubled up the Spartans in blocks, 12-6. NSU also posted 11 service aces on the night.

Morgan State was led by Kierra Outlin with 15 kills and Erin Cox with nine kills and 12 digs. Natalie Chafeh added 42 assists, eight digs, seven kills and four blocks, while Zurie Smith totaled seven kills and a match-high seven blocks. The Bears hit better than .200 in all five sets.
