SSU Volleyball Team Falls to Stetson at Breast Cancer Dig Pink Game

Savannah, Ga.-Savannah State fell 0-3 to Stetson y on October 25 in Willcox Wiley Gym at its annual Dig Pink game in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness.

The Lady Tigers fell in three straight sets, 15-25, 12-25, and then 15-25.

SSU's veteran player, Chikia Jones led the Lady Tigers offensively, recording a total of four kills out of the teams overall 13. Bridgette Stephens earned a team high of 8 digs, while Bryana Gadis dominated the game in service aces (5).

The Lady Hatters had a total of 43 kills and 40 digs. Kaylee Ream led the game individually with 15 kills, and teammate Monique Russell led in digs with 15.

In honor of breast cancer, SSU and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Coastal Georgia affiliate had an informational booth in the lobby where patrons could collect materials and talk with breast cancer survivors about early detection, and treatment. The Lady Tigers also honored Ms. Almisha Mattox; a four year breast cancer survivor and 1970 graduate of Savannah State College with a pink volleyball, and athletic jacket. Mrs. Mattox conducted the coin toss for the event and supporters received a pink volleyball with Dig Pink for Breast Cancer printed on it.

Hornet Rally Falls Short As Lehigh Prevails, 3-1

DOVER, Del. - Down, 2-0, it looked as though the Delaware State University volleyball team was going to make a comeback after winning set three, but the Hornets hit a -.263 attack percentage en route to a 10-25 set four and eventual 1-3 match loss to Lehigh University Tuesday evening at Memorial Hall.

Junior Bel Fakaosi collected a game-high 12 digs and team-high 18 assists in the loss.  Sophomore Jessica Croucher and freshman Edarkis Branch each tallied six kills on the night.  Senior Elisa Herrmann recorded five kills and a team-leading .267 attack percentage (five kills/one error/15 total attacks).

Paige Kruse contributed a game-high 11 kills while Jessica Kudirka had a game-high 38 assists for Lehigh.

Bethune-Cookman Falls to North Florida, 3-0

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Krysta Gardner had nine kills and broke the Bethune-Cookman University single-season kill record in the Lady Wildcats' 3-0 (25-21,25-23,23-16) loss to North Florida Tuesday night.

The junior from Ashburn Va., now has 353 kills on the year, surpassing the old mark of 347 set by Shakirah Hudson in 2000.

Both Gardner and Janeen Davis (eight kills, nine digs) also surpassed the B-CU single-season record for total attempts of 897 previously held by Terra Wagner. Gardner now has 914 and Davis 911.

Freshman setter Aubrianna Curtis  combined for 24 assists and 10 digs for the Lady Wildcats, now 9-15 after their fifth straight loss. Curtis also had three kills and two services aces. Linda Nwabuko added five kills.

SC State Women's Volleyball Falls to Charleston Southern

Orangeburg, S.C.- SC State saw its five-game win streak come to a halt, as they dropped a non-conference match to Charleston Southern, 3-1 (20-25, 25-14, 20-25, 20-25), in Dukes Gymnasium.  With the loss the Lady Bulldogs fall to 14-12 overall on the season.

Desire Waller continued to be productive for SC State leading all attackers with 16 kills.  Waller also had five digs and two block assists in the contest.  Despite the loss the Lady Bulldogs had three players to record double-digit digs led by E. Paige Webb with 14.  Bria Brimmer picked up 11 and Melissa Robinson had 10 digs as SC State had one of its lowest hitting percentages of the season (.115).  Peri Ligons contributed eight kills while Shabree Roberson and Tiffané Jackson each had seven kills in the loss for the Lady Bulldogs.  Roberson also put down six total blocks (3 solo-3 assists) in the match.

Charleston Southern (5-20) was led in hitting by Wynter Davis with 13 kills.  Morgan Hadden had seven kills and Ashley Higginbothem had 13 digs for the Buccaneers who picked up just its fifth win of the season.
