NSU Wins Round 2 of Battle of the Bay, 3-2

HAMPTON, Va. - What is almost always an intense match was all that and then some as the Norfolk State volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to take down Hampton, 3-2, Friday evening in the Battle of the Bay at Holland Hall.

Aside from having 38 attack errors, NSU led on the stat sheet, including match highs of 15 kills and eight blocks from junior Charlotte Armstead. Freshman Adriana Ramos and junior Beatriz Ferreira added 13 and 12 kills, respectively, while Ramos completed the double-double with 12 digs.

Junior Kristen Burt led the offense with 40 assists, and senior Tracey Copley had a game-high 19 digs. Senior Jasmine Frazier added nine kills, and Frazier, Ferreira and freshman Jasmin Flowers each had five blocks on the night.

The Spartans held a 13-11 advantage in blocks as well as a 53-45 edge in digs. NSU hit .123 for the match, compared to .138 for the Pirates, but Hampton also committed 11 fewer attack errors.

The Pirates were led by Krista Kraskura with 12 kills and 15 digs, while Juliana Chavez and Lihi Elkayam combined for 40 assists. Petra Parros had 10 kills and four blocks, and Ornela Cadavid had a team-high six blocks.

Morgan State Holds Off Coppin State, 3-0; Wins Second Straight Match

BALTIMORE, Md. (Oct. 21, 2011)-Morgan State junior Kierra Outlin  tallied a match-high eight kills and Erin Cox added seven and a  match-high 11 digs to lead Morgan State past crosstown rival Coppin  State, 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-20) in a MEAC North Division match on Friday evening at Hill Field House.

Morgan State (5-17, 3-3 MEAC) which improved to 52-4 all-time against  Coppin State also received five kills from Janelle Wilson, who recorded  a team-high hitting percentage of .500. Ngebui (Natalie) Chafeh  finished with a match-high 25 assists, while Jourdan Lemons chipped in with six digs and a team-high two service aces.

The win marked just the second time this season that the Lady Bears  have won back-to-back matches. It was also their second consecutive home victory, something that hasn't happened since Oct. 16 and Oct. 23, 2009. The last Morgan State won back-to-back home matches (without any road matches in between) was Nov. 3 and Nov. 6, 2007.

Coppin State (4-18, 1-6 MEAC) was led by Ariel Richard, who finished  with seven kills and Salena Weekly added five kills and had a team-high two service aces. Weekly also notched a match-high five blocks, including three solo blocks to help the Eagles to a 6-3 blocking advantage over Morgan State. Kristine Bindule tallied a team-high 16 assists and added three kills on four attempts to finish with a match-high hitting percentage of .750. For the match Coppin State hit for a .049 as a team.

As a team the Lady Bears hit for a .250 with all of their hitters hitting in the positive for the second straight match. Coppin State had three service aces, while Morgan State finished with six. Both teams committed 11 service errors apiece.

UMES Too Much For DSU; Hornets Lose, 3-0

DOVER, Del. -Delaware State felt the lost presence of senior Sonja Banicevic , who's season ended early due to an injury, as they were swept, 3-0, by the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Friday night at Memorial Hall.

The Hawks recorded 13 aces on the night in addition to 40 kills, compared to three aces and 25 kills for the Hornets.  UMES also posted a .272 (40 kills/18 errors/81 total attacks) attack percentage while DSU hit just .197 (25/13/61).

Senior Elisa Herrmann led Del State with eight kills with junior Laisha Davis contributing six of her own.  UMES freshman Saitaua Iosia notched a game-high 12 kills for the Hawks.
