DON METIL EARNS WIN #100 AT UMES AS HAWKS SHUT OUT ALABAMA STATE
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The Maroon and Grey opened up at home for the UMES Hawk Invitational with a dominating 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-12) victory over Alabama State, giving Don Metil his 100th victory as head coach of the Hawks.
UMES improves to 7-6 on the season and 1-0 in the Invitational while Alabama State falls to 7-15.
The Hawks started with a 4-1 lead in set one, led by a pair of blocks by Ndidi Ibe. Alabama State took an advantage, but the Hawks took seven of eight points to take a 14-12, and did not look back, winning set one 25-19.
UMES began the second game on a 4-0 run. After the Hornets got to within one 5-4, the Hawks got a 6-0 run capped by a pair of kills from Maline Vaitai to go up 11-4. The Hawks never looked back and won the game 25-13 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Game three saw the Hawks win another strong outing, winning 25-12 to take the match.
UMES improves their home winning streak to 16 matches, going 48-0 in set in that span.
As a team, the Hawks hit .448. Kaveinga Lea'Aetoa (Salt Lake City, Utah) led the Hawks with 11 kills with just one error in 13 attacks for a hitting percentage of .769. Saitaua Iosia (Long Beach, Calif.) got 11 kills to hit at .471, while Vaitai got eight kills at .400.
Friday saw Emily Shannon and Raquel Rogers play their first match in a Hawks uniform.
Maya Bell led the Hornets with 10 kills and six digs.
Earlier in the day, CSU Bakersfield defeated Alabama State 3-1 to begin the UMES Hawk Invitational, followed by a 3-0 victory by Hampton over North Carolina Central. CSU Bakersfield defeated North Carolina Central 3-0 in the late match.

Lady Pirates Beat NCCU In Straight Sets
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -Hampton won its first match of the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawk Invitational on Friday defeated North Carolina Central 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-22) at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center.
The Lady Pirates (5-7) extended their winning streak to three matches with their fifth straight win over NCCU. The Eagles dropped to 1-14 on the season.
NCCU hit just .167 for the match, recording 41 kills and 22 errors in 114 attacks. The Eagles hit a team-best .188 (17 kills, eight errors in 48 attacks) in the second set.
NCCU had eight service errors.
Sonja Maksimovic and Mianna Armstrong led the Lady Pirates with 10 kills each; Maksimovic also hit a team-best .643 - thanks to just one error in 14 attacks - while Armstrong added 10 digs on defense for a double-double.
Kraskura and junior Brittany Hill each had 10 digs, while Kraskura also had seven kills and hit .238 (two errors in 21 attacks).
Chavez came off the bench to record a team-high 16 assists, while senior Lihi Elkayam added 14 assists - leaving her 43 assists shy of tying the school record for career assists.
Dayanna Arrufat led NCCU with 13 kills, while Emanuelle Santos had 12 kills and a team-high 10 digs on defense.

DSU Fights Back To Win 3-2 Over Howard In MEAC Opener
DOVER, Del. - Delaware State got out to a quick start, winning the first two sets against Howard University Friday night, but the Bison rallied back to force game five before the Hornets won their home and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener, 25-17, 15-28, 14-25, 16-25, 15-11.
Howard posted a .538 attack percentage, including 17 kills, and just three errors in set three compared to just six kills and a .158 attack percentage for the Hornets.
The Hornets held HU to a .038 attack percentage in the fifth set (seven kills/six errors) while hitting .250 (five kills/one error) themselves.
Jessica Croucher posted a season-high 14 kills on the night while Christobel Fakaosi recorded a season-high 35 assists. Sonja Banicevic contributed a team-high 15 digs.
The win puts DSU at 2-11 on the season and 1-0 in the MEAC while the Bison fall to 1-16 and 0-1.
