Lady Pirates Defeat Coppin State 76-56

BALTIMORE- -Hampton won its second conference game of the season on Saturday, beating Coppin State 76-56 at the Physical Education Center.

Freshman guard Nicole Hamilton led three Lady Pirates in double figures with 22 points on 7-for-19 shooting, making five of her nine 3-pointers. Freshman guard Chikilra Goodman scored a career-high 16 points on 6-for-7 shooting, while senior forward Quanneisha Perry added 11 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.

Coppin State (2-10, 0-2) shot 40.7 percent (22-for-54) from the floor, but only made nine of 19 free throw attempts. The Eagles turned the ball over 28 times, resulting in 28 Hampton points.

Jeanine Manley led Coppin State with 15 points, while Larissa Carter added 12 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Morgan State Holds Off Howard, 56-46; Improves to 2-0 In MEAC

BALTIMORE, Md. (Jan. 8, 2011)- Morgan State's Theresa Davis scored a game-high 15 points and Brittany Dodson added 12, to lead  the Lady Bears to a 56-46 victory over visiting Howard in a MEAC contest at Hill Field House on Saturday afternoon.

Moneshia Davis chipped in with nine points, while Erin Hawkins tallied eight to help the Lady Bears improve to 7-6 overall and 2-0 in MEAC play. The win also ended a two-game losing skid at home.

Howard (3-12, 0-2 MEAC) was led by Saadia Doyle, who recorded her seventh double-double of the season with a game-high 20 points and game-high 10 rebounds. Tamoria Holmes added 11 points for the Lady Bison, who are on a six-game losing skid.

SC State Women Win MEAC Opener 73-62 over UMES

ORANGEBURG, SC - Center Fannie Goodwin and guard Trinese Fox tossed in 13 points each to help South Carolina State to a 73-62 win over Maryland Eastern Shore in the MEAC opener for both teams Saturday at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.

SC State, which won its MEAC opener for the first time since the 2005-06 campaign, also got 10 points each from guard Whitney Wiley and forward Cherisha Floyd, an Orangeburg native. Tracey Flowers and Tiana Hemphill had six rebounds each for the Lady Bulldogs in the victory, who won their second in a row to improve to 5-6 on the year and 1-0 in the MEAC.

The visiting Lady Hawks were paced by Kwinnyate Mercer with 15 points and Latoya Buckner with nine. LaKendra Wilkerson chipped in eight points and an equal number of rebounds for UMES, which dipped to 2-10 on the season and 0-1 in the league.

Late Rally Falls Short to B-CU, 52-50

NORFOLK, Va. - A big rally late in the second half fell short as the Norfolk State fell to Bethune-Cookman, 52-50, Saturday afternoon at Joseph Echols Hall.

The Wildcats got the lead up to as much as 17 in the second half before some scrappy defense created offensive opportunities for the Spartans. A last second shot by NSU (6-5, 0-2 MEAC) did not fall as Bethune-Cookman (7-6, 1-1) held on for the victory.

Freshman Rae Corbo led NSU with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting with five steals and four assists, while junior Sarah Daily tallied 13 points with four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Freshman Rachel Gordon led the team with seven rebounds.

The Spartans, though, shot just 38.2 percent for the game, compared to 40.8 percent for the Wildcats. NSU did force 22 turnovers in the game including 17 in the second half alone. NSU committed 18 turnovers, but the Wildcats had a 13-2 advantage in second chance points.

Jasmine Elum led the Wildcats with 22 points and added seven rebounds, while Sarah Bolden tallied 10 points and six boards. Jasmine Daniels posted five assists, with Cleniece Roberts grabbing a game-high eight boards.

The Wildcats also had a 36-30 advantage on the boards, including 11 on the offensive end. The Spartans had 14 steals, 12 of those in the second half.

Lady Rattlers Fall to North Carolina A&T, 75-71

GREENSBORO -North Carolina A&T remained dominant at home against conference foes on Saturday with a 75-71 win over Florida A&M at Corbett Sports Center.

Freshman Mikala Scott led the way with 18 points. Senior Jaleesa Sams added 15 points and 11 rebounds. In the process, Sams became the 12th player in school history to go over 1,000 points in a career.

The Lady Aggies have won 26 straight games at home against conference opponents. N.C. A&T's lead ballooned to 17 in the second half, but the Rattlers went to a smaller, quicker lineup and chopped the Aggies lead to 66-61 on an Antonia Bennett 3-pointer with three minutes remaining in the game.

The Lady Rattlers (5-8, 1-1 MEAC) were led by Tameka McKelton's 17 points. Antonia Bennett had 15.

Lady Eagles Clipped In Series Opener Against Delaware State 

DURHAM, N.C. - North Carolina Central sophomore Chasidy Williams netted a season-high 20 points in the series launch between the Lady Eagles and the Lady Hornets of Delaware State on Saturday, Jan. 8 in McDougald-McLendon Gym.

The evening contest concluded with the Lady Hornets defeating the Lady Eagles, 69-48.

Along with Williams' season-high performance, senior Jori Nwachukwu and Blaire Houston scored nine points apiece.  Nwachukwu paced the rebounding game by grabbing 11 boards.  Shanise Blanks finished with five points for the Lady Eagles.

Delaware State had four student-athletes score in double-figures, including one double-double outing.  Brittany Washington led the offense with 17 points and 15 rebounds, followed by Kianna Conner's 15 points off the bench.  Harmon netted 13 points, as Tasia Bristow rounded out the double-figure performances with 10 points.  Kianna D'Oliveria followed Washington's rebounding effort with 14 boards.
