Navy Uses Balanced Attack to Defeat Howard, 58-45
ANNAPOLIS, MD - Kara Smith scored a season-best 13 points as the Howard dropped its first game of 2011 at Navy, 58-45, on Jan. 4. With the loss, HU finishes non-conference play with a 3-10 mark and 3-11 overall.
Saadia Doyle was the only other Howard player in double figures tallying 12 points and eight boards. Tomaria Holmes chipped in with nine points.
The Lady Bison started the game slow - allowing the Midshipmen to score 12 straight unanswered points within the opening six-plus minutes. Curley-Payne scored off a drive to the basket to give HU its first points of the game at the 13:39 mark.
Navy took a comfortable 30-19 cushion at the half behind an impressive 5-for-11 mark from three-point land. Smith paced Howard at the half with six points in 12 minutes.
In the second period, the Midshipmen continued to build the advantage - leading by as many as 23 points with just over two minutes remaining in regulation. The Lady Bison ended the game with a 10-0 run, but it was not enough to close the gap.
Navy used a balanced attack as no players reached in double figures. Cassie Consendine and Angela Myers paced the Midshipmen with nine points. Jade Geif and Audrey Bauer finished with eight points a piece.
Navy shot 8-for-17 from behind the arc and was 21-for-50 from the floor.
The Lady Bison committed 11 turnovers and converted 15 Navy turnovers into 23 points. The Midshipmen held a commanding 41-27 advantage on the glass.
