Men's Basketball Recap: January 4

Hot Shooting Virginia Downs Howard

Charlottesville, VA-Virginia used a blistering three-point shooting barrage that included a blistering 64 percent from beyond the arc to shoot down Howard, 84-63 in a non-conference men's game at John Paul Jones Arena.

Most of the damage was inflicted by Mustapha Farrakhan, who poured in a career-high 31 points on 8 of 9 shooting from long range.  Joe Harris also got into the frenzy, coming off the bench to tally 16 points on 5 of 6 from the three-point line.

The Bison (2-11) had their best shooting performance of the season, connecting on 53 percent from the field overall, and a better than respectable 47 percent from the beyond the arc.

Mike Phillips led four Howard players with double figures with 21 points while Dadrian Collins contributed 15 of 5 of 8 from the outside and Anton Dickerson and Kyle Riley each tallied 11.

Aggies Defeat Hiwassee 76-53

GREENSBORO, N.C. -North Carolina A&T returned home Tuesday night after a month of road trips and earned a 76-53 win over Hiwassee College at Corbett Sports Center.

Junior guard Marc Hill led the Aggies with 18 points. Sophomore forward Adrian Powell added 16 points and four assists. Thomas Coleman earned his ninth double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds. The Aggies (6-8) snapped a five-game losing streak by shooting 59 percent in the second half.

N.C. A&T was a more spirited group in the second half although it took eight minutes before the Aggies truly pulled away. Powell accounted for 14 points during a 16-0 Aggies run by scoring 10 points and dishing out two assists during the hot streak.

Adrian McLaurin led the Tigers with 22 points and 12 rebounds.

Jackson, Bears Drop at Baylor, 89-72

WACO, Texas -- LaceDarius Dunn set career highs with 43 points and 10 3-pointers as Baylor broke out of a shooting slump in the second half and raced past Morgan State 89-72 on Tuesday night.

Dunn hit three 3-pointers within 58 seconds during a 19-4 run midway through the second half as the Bears (10-3) broke open a tight game. McDonald's All-American Perry Jones III, who was held scoreless Monday in a win over Texas Southern, bounced back with 17 points, and Quincy Acy added 11 points and eight rebounds.

DeWayne Jackson, who matched Dunn almost shot for shot down the stretch, had 29 to lead Morgan State (5-7), while Justin Black added 13 and Aric Brooks 10.

South Carolina Hands SC State 91-56 Setback

COLUMBIA, SC-Lakeem Jackson and Brain Richardson tossed in 17 each to power SEC foe South Carolina to a 91-56 victory over South Carolina State Tuesday in non-conference action at the Colonial Life Arena.

The loss was the fifth in a row for the Bulldogs, who dropped to 4-9 on the season before entering conference play this weekend against Maryland Eastern Shore.

Guard Darnell Porter had 16 points and five rebounds to lead SC State in the loss. JUCO transfer      Presano Bell grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and scored eight points.

South Carolina, despite having 16 turnovers won the defensive battle with 15 blocks as a team. Senior Sam Muldrow finished with a double-double 15 points and 11 rebounds, while freshman guard Bruce Ellington chipped in 13.

Wildcats Cut Up Carver 87-66 To Head Into MEAC Play

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Put a new point guard in the starting line-up and CJ Reed has one of his best floor nights of his career. Of course it makes sense.

Reed led four Bethune-Cookman players in double-figures with 18 points and matched his career-high of nine assists as the Wildcats snapped a three-game losing streak by thumping Carver Bible 87-66 Tuesday in historic Moore Gymnasium.

Garrius Holloman and Alexander Starling each scored 17 points and Kevin Dukes 16 as the Wildcats (6-8) concluded their non-conference slate. B-CU opens MEAC play Saturday at Norfolk State then have a nationally televised game (ESPNU) Monday at North Carolina A&T.

B-CU coach Clifford Reed put Dukes in the starting line-up at point guard, taking the ball handling chores away from CJ Reed and to also free up the coach's son to create more opportunities.

Bernard Parks led Carver Bible (0-15) with 20.
