Women's Basketball Recap: January 3

 SC State Women Defeat Southern Wesleyan 82-64

ORANGEBURG, SC --  Sophomore guard Trinese Fox led four South Carolina State players in double figures with 17 points and added eight rebounds to spark the Lady Bulldogs to an 82-64 win over visiting Southern Wesleyan Monday night at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.

Also scoring double digits for Coach Doug Robertson's team were senior Whitney Wiley who had 13 points, and junior Tracey Flowers and sophomore Tiana Hemphill with 12 each.

SC State snapped a three-game losing streak with the win and climbed to 4-6 on the season.

The Warriors, who dropped to 7-4 on the season, were led by Janaye Gilliard with a game-high 24 points. Ashley Cooper chipped in 12 and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds in the loss.

Houston's Season-High 17 Points Not Enough Against #10 North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - With North Carolina Central junior Blaire Houston's season-high 17 points and a first-half 12-0 run in their favor, the Lady Eagles loss their offensive edge on Monday, Jan. 3 as #10 North Carolina cruised to a 97-40 victory in Carmichael Arena on the Chapel Hill, N.C. based campus.

Houston's season-high 17 points began within the first 20 minutes of play, as she led the maroon and grey with 15 points. Her offensive surge, along with senior Jori Nwachukwu's four points paced the Lady Eagles on a 12-0 run at the 11:43 mark, snapping an eleven-point deficit.

Nwachukwu ended the contest with six points, as sophomore Chasidy Williams scored nine points and grabbed eight rebounds.  While Winston-Salem, N.C. native J'Mia Pollock seized eight rebounds.

Collectively, NCCU obtained 37 rebounds, hit 77 percent from the charity stripe, stole eight #10 North Carolina possessions and forced 13 Tar Heel turnovers.

Four North Carolina student-athletes scored in double-figures.  Waltiea Rolle and Krista Gross topped the offense by tying at 16 points apiece.  Jessica Breland and Tierra Ruffin-Pratt scored 10 points, respectively.  Laura Broomfield paced the rebounding game with 12 boards, while Gross contributed with 11 rebounds.  Cetera DeGraffenreid directed the offense with seven assists.

Clemson Edges Lady Aggies


CLEMSON, S.C. - Coming off of a week in which she was named the MEAC Defensive Player of the Week, Jaleesa Sams recorded eight steals Monday night against Clemson, but the North Carolina A&T women's basketball team fell just short of an upset with a 77-71 loss to the Tigers at Littlejohn Coliseum.

Sams also scored 22 points and collected eight rebounds for the Aggies (4-7). Jaquayla Berry added 15 points.

The lead stood at 68-61 with 3:14 remaining. Sams pulled the Aggies to within four with a three. Two free throws by Clemson's Kirstyn Wright put the Tigers ahead by four. Sams responded with another 3-pointer that put the Aggies down 70-67 with 1:44 to play.

Clemson ran the clock down to 24 seconds before scoring on a Lindsey Mason layup to put the Tigers up by six.

Wright led Clemson with 24 points, five steals and four assists. Pauldo added 22 points on 9-for-14 shooting.
