Eagles Survive Scare From DII Wilmington

BALTIMORE -- Michael Harper scored 17 points and Coppin State made 6-of-8 free throw attempts in the final thirty seconds of the game as the Eagles held off an upset bid by Division II Wilmington 78-73 on Monday in the Physical Education Complex.

Herbert Dennis, who led all scorers with 21 points, made one of two free throw attempts to cut the Coppin State lead to 72-70 with 1:49 left in the contest.

Akeem Ellis then made four consecutive free throws the last of which increased the Eagle margin to 76-70 with 12 seconds left in the game.

Marcus Gomes drilled a three-pointer for Wilmington to cut the lead in half with 10 seconds to play, but Ellis and Antonio Williams each made 1-of-2 attempts to seal the victory for the Eagles.

Coppin State, which halted a four-game losing streak with the victory, out-rebounded the Wildcats 43-30 and received 40 points off of its bench.

Ceslovas Kucinskas and Williams each scored 13 points for Coppin State, while Gallo added 12 points. Williams also notched a game-high 12 rebounds for the Eagles.

Corye Payton added 15 points and Gomes scored 14 for the Wildcats.

NCCU's Second-Half Shooting Woes Let Pirates Slip Away With 58-50 Victory

DURHAM, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) - North Carolina Central let an eight-point second-half lead slip away as the host Eagles went ice cold from long range after intermission, allowing the visiting Pirates of East Carolina University to capture a 58-50 road victory inside McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium on Monday night.

The outcome ended streaks for both squads. For NCCU, the loss is its first at home in five outings. The Pirates, meanwhile, snap a four-game losing skid, including three straight setbacks on the road.

ECU (8-6) was topped by Jontae Sherrod with 17 points, while Jamar Abrams added 16 points and a team-best seven rebounds.

NCCU (5-7) was paced by C.J. Wilkerson with a game-high 19 points, followed by Landon Clement with 16 points. Nick Chasten had eight points to go along with a game-high 12 rebounds, marking the eighth time in his three-year Eagle career he has collected double-figure boards.

Poor Second Half Shooting Downs UMES At Oklahoma, 73-49

NORMAN, Okla. - For the fourth straight game, redshirt junior Hillary Haley led the Maryland Eastern Shore in scoring but shooting woes got the best of the Hawks as they fell, 73-49, to the University of Oklahoma Monday night at the Lloyd Noble Center.

UMES (3-10) shot just 27.6 percent 8-of-29 shooting from the floor in the second half and 32.8 percent overall in the game in the loss as they wrapped up their non-conference schedule.

Haley had 17 points on the night and also led the team with nine rebounds. Freshman Joseph Swift (Brooklyn, N.Y.) posted a game-high three steals in addition to his five points and three assists.

Sooner sophomore Steven Pledger posted a game-high 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field (3-of-4 from behind the arc) while senior Cade Davis tallied a double-double for the Sooners with 11 points and 12 rebounds (11 on the defensive end). With the win, OU improves to 8-6 on the season.
