Norfolk State University Athletics and the NSU Athletics Foundation will recognize past inductees of the Hampton Roads African-American Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, Feb. 12 when NSU plays Hampton in the Battle of the Bay basketball doubleheader.
The women play at 4 p.m. and the men at 6 p.m. at Joseph Echols Hall. HRAASHF inductees will be introduced during halftime of the men's game.
The HRAASHF is a non-profit organization established in 1995 to recognize and honor African Americans who have excelled in athletics in the Hampton Roads region.
Current NSU Athletics Director Marty Miller was a member of the HRAASHF class of 2010. Miller, who was a standout as NSU baseball coach and player, joined an impressive list of former NSU coaches that are HRAASHF inductees. Included are William "Dick" Price (football/athletics director), LaVerne Sweat (women's track), James Sweat (women's basketball) and Robert Smith, Charles Christian and Ernie Fears (men's basketball).
NSU athletes enshrined in the HRAASHF include men's basketball players Bob Dandridge, Richard "Pop" Pitts and Johnny Morris; women's basketball player Vivian Greene; track athletes Joseph Thornton and Steve Riddick; and football players Andrew Heidelberg, Joseph Langston and Larry Stepney.
