Spartans Snap 24-Game MEAC Losing Streak, Down S.C. State 73-65

Norfolk, Va. – Norfolk State snapped a 24-game MEAC losing streak Monday evening with a 73-65 win over South Carolina State at Joseph Echols Hall.

The Spartans improved to 8-8 on the year, including 1-5 in conference play, thanks to the play of Whitney Long. The junior guard went 6-of-7 from 3-point range as part of a 9-of-11 overall effort for a game-high 24 points.

NSU erased an eight-point halftime deficit and outscored S.C. State by 16 in the second half.

In a turn over irony, NSU defeated the school it last beat in conference play, that being a 75-52 win over the Bulldogs two years ago on Feb. 21, 2009 in Echols Hall.

Long finished one 3-pointer short of tying the program record of seven set on two different occasions, but did set a career high in the process. The Spartans hit 8-of-18 overall (44.4 percent) from beyond the arc.

Junior Tyisha Bridges posted 13 points and freshman Rae Corbo sank 12, with both players scoring all their points in the second half. Corbo also had a game-high four assists with two steals, while Bridges added three steals. Junior Marian Brooks and sophomore Batavia Owens tied for the team lead with six rebounds.

NSU hit 50 percent from the game for the game, including 57.7 percent in the second half. S.C. State hit under 40 percent in both halves and 38.2 percent (21-of-55) for the game, including 4-of-8 from long range. The Spartans sank 26-of-52 shots for the game.

The Bulldogs’ leading scorer, Whitney Wiley, posted 17 points, while Fannie Goodwin totaled 14 points with a team-high six rebounds. Tracey Flowers joined them in double digits with 11 points and also added four rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Lady Pirates Use Strong Second Half to Defeat Florida A&M

Tallahassee, Fla.Hampton got back into the win column on Monday night, defeating Florida A&M 59-47 at the Lawson Center.

Freshman Chikilra Goodman led four Lady Pirates in double figures with 15 points on 5-for-10 shooting, making three of her five 3-pointers. Senior forward Quanneisha Perry and junior guard Jericka Jenkins each scored 13 points, and Perry added a team-high 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season.

Junior forward Melanie Warner scored 10 points.

The Lady Pirates trailed for much of the first half, as Florida A&M opened the game on an 8-2 run and led by as much as 14; Antonia Bennett hit a jumper with 4:56 left in the first half to give the Rattlers a 26-12 lead.

But Hampton (13-6, 6-1 MEAC) responded with a 19-4 run, taking a 31-30 lead with 44 seconds left in the first half when senior guard Laura Lewis hit a jumper.

FAMU shot 50.0 percent (11-for-22) from the floor in the first half, but Hampton held the Rattlers to just 14.8 percent shooting (4-for-27) in the second half.

Hampton outscored FAMU 28-17 in the second half.

Bennett led all scorers with 20 points to go along with a team-high nine rebounds, while Tameka McKelton added 11 points.

Morton, Sanders Propel UMES Past Morgan State, 65-56

Princess Anne, Md. Casey Morton scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed five steals and Chelsea Sanders added 14 points and three rebounds as Maryland Eastern Shore  won its fourth straight MEAC game and fifth in the seven overall with a 64-56 decision over Morgan State at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center Monday.

Morton was 7-for-15 from the field and 4-of-7 from 3-point range to record her fourth 20-point game of the season and help UMES (7-12, 4-2 MEAC) to its sixth win in the last seven games over MSU. The loss for Morgan State (10-8, 4-2) snapped a three-game winning streak.

The win also marked the first time since the 2008-09 season UMES has won four consecutive MEAC games.

The Lady Hawks now lead the all-time series with the Lady Bears, 36-28.

Coleman Leads Eagles Past Delaware State 64-50

Dover, DE - Freshman Kyra Coleman scored a career-high 18 points leading Coppin State to a 64-50 MEAC victory over Delaware State on Monday at Memorial Hall.

Coleman finished the game 7-of-8 from the floor and made 4-of-6 free throw attempts to lead the Eagles to their fourth victory in the last five games.

Coppin State (6-11, 3-3 MEAC) shot 46.0 percent from the floor, while limiting Delaware State to just 33.3 percent shooting.

The Eagles also received 14 points and 12 rebounds from Jeanine Manley and nine points from freshman Larrisa Carter.

Delaware State (5-13, 1-5 MEAC) was led by Deanna Harmon who scored 11 points.

Howard Women Breeze Past Wildcats

Daytona Beach, FL – Howard defeated Bethune Cookman, 56-42 at the Ocean Center on Mon. Jan. 24. HU improves 6-14 overall and 3-4 in MEAC play.

Bethune-Cookman started the game with a jumper from Amanda Hairston. The Lady Wildcats took the lead with an 8-1 run. HU stopped the run with a jumper by Kara Smith at the 16:14 mark to make it 9-3 in favor of the Lady Bison.

With just under thirteen minutes remaining in the first half, the Lady Bison tied the game at 9-9. From there, the Bison pushed the spread to as many as nine points (24-15) and kept the advantage - taking a slim 30-21 cushion after the first 20 minutes of play.

Howard came out the locker room with defensive intensity, holding the Wildcats scoreless until the 15:45 mark. In that four-plus span, the Lady Bison increased the score by seven points, 38-21.

Saadia Doyle finished the game flawless for the second-straight night with a game-best 27 points and no turnovers in 36 minutes of play.

Tamoria Holmes also scored in double-digits with 16 points and three steals.

For Bethune-Cookman, Jasmine Daniels tallied 12 points, while Cleniece Roberts had eight points.
