Lady Hornets Run Past Wolverines, 90-58

Dover, Del. (Jan. 1, 2011) --- Freshman Kianna Conner led five players in double figures with 18 points in Delaware State's 90-58 win over cross town rival Wesley in a New Year's matinee at Memorial Hall this afternoon.

The Lady Hornets won for the second time in three games to improve to 3-8 on the season. The Division III Wolverines fell to 6-5.

Conner was 7-for-11 from the field, including 3-of-4 from three-point territory. She also led all players with four steals. Brittany Washington added a season-high 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds for DSU. Deanna Harmon (12), Kianna D'Olveira (11) and Alexis Johnson (10) also reached double figures for the Lady Hornets. Harmon also had a team-high six assists.

Jazmine Miller and Angie Owens were high scorers for Wesley with 15 points each. Cory Boyd added 10 for the Wolves, including her 1000th career point. Boyd also led all players with seven assists. Miller's performance was highlighted by 3-of-4 shooting from three-point territory.

Delaware State used a 12-2 run to take control early in the contest. Conner capped off the spurt with a three-pointer to give the Lady Hornets a 14-4 lead with 15:36 left in the first half.

DSU opened up a 45-25 lead on a three-point play by Tonya Clark with 4:27 left in the half. The Lady Hornets led 51-31 at the break.

Delaware State was 20-for-32 from the field (62.5%) in the first 20 minutes.

The Lady Hornets outscored Wesley 13-2 to start the second half, and stretched their lead to 64-33 on a three-point play by Washington with 15:16 left to play.

Delaware State held its biggest lead, 83-50, on a free throw by Crystal Pitt to with 4:38 remaining.

The Lady Hornets hit 33 of their 64 shots from the field (62.5%), including 5-of-11 from three-point territory. Wesley was 21-of-49 from the floor (42.9%), including 10-of-22 from beyond the arc.

Delaware State held a 40-28 rebounding edge and also forced the Wolverines to commit 28 turnovers.
