Hornets Roll Past Rattlers

Dover, Del. (Jan. 17, 2010) --- Casey Walker scored a game-high 24 points, while Jay Threatt recorded  12 points, six assists and five steals to lead Delaware State to a 62-57 MEAC victory over Florida A&M in Memorial Hall Monday evening.

The Hornets won for the third time in four games to improve to 7-9 overall and 3-1 in the MEAC. The Rattlers dropped their seventh straight to fall to 5-12 and 0-5.

Walker was 8-for-12 from the field, including 5-of-8 from three-point territory, to highlight his fourth 20-point game of the season.

Threatt entered the contest as the MEAC leader in assists, steals and assist-to-turnover ratio.

Marques Oliver contributed 10 points and five blocks for the Hornets. He has 19 blocks in the last four games.

Amin Stevens led three Florida A&M players in double figures with 15 points. Avery Moore and Brandon Hosley added 12 points each for the Rattlers.

Delaware State hit eight free throws in the last 58 seconds to secure the win.

The Hornets outscored the Rattlers 38-30 in the second half. DSU was 13-for-24 from the field (54.2%) in the final 20 minutes.

Morgan's Career Night Keys Pirates Victory

HAMPTON, Va. - Hampton junior guard Kwame Morgan scored a career-high 36 points on Monday night against North Carolina A&T, and the Pirates needed every last one of them in a thrilling, 82-77 win at the HU Convocation Center.

Morgan shot 11-for-22 from the floor, hitting six of his 12 3-pointers and made all eight of his free throws - while also dishing out a career-high five assists and grabbing a career-high four steals.

Junior guard Darrion Pellum added 19 points for the Pirates (14-4, 4-1 MEAC), while senior forward Charles Funches added 12 points. Junior forward Danny Agbelese pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds and blocked a team-high three shots in 14 minutes.

The Pirates shot 45.0 percent (27-for-60) from the floor, making 10 of their 28 3-pointers. Hampton also went 18-for-25 (72.0 percent) from the free throw line, while also forcing 16 Aggie turnovers.

Marc Hill and Thomas Coleman led the Aggies (8-10, 3-2 MEAC) with 16 points each, while Nic Simpson added 13 points and R.J. Buck scored 10.

Eagles Use Big Second Half To Rally Past South Carolina State

BALTIMORE - Tony Gallo scored 10 second-half points, including the go-ahead basket with 1:48 to play, leading Coppin State to an 84-80 MEAC victory over visiting South Carolina State on Monday in the Physical Education Complex.

Antonio Williams made one of two free throws giving the Eagles an 82-77 lead with 18 seconds left, but Westley Telfare drained a three-pointer with 13 seconds to play that cut the lead to 82-80.

Branden Doughty and Williams each made one of two free throws for Coppin State in the final 12 seconds sealing the victory for the Eagles.

Coppin State (7-9, 2-2 MEAC) was led by Jordan Lee who scored 14 points to lead five players in double figures. Vince Goldsberry and Harper had 13 points and Akeem Ellis and Gallo each had 12 points.

South Carolina State (5-12, 1-3 MEAC) was led by Tyvon Williams who scored a game-high 16 points. Khalif Toombs and Brandon Riley each scored 15 for the Bulldogs.

UMES Falls Short In 71-64 Loss To League-Leading B-CU

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Maryland Eastern Shore definitely had their opportunities against Bethune-Cookman Monday evening but was unable to get over the proverbial hump as they fell, 71-64, at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center.

Junior Tyler Hines led the way for the Hawks with a game-high 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field, six rebounds and two blocks.

Junior Dishawn Bradshaw and redshirt junior Hillary Haley also scored in double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Haley also contributed six rebounds while Bradshaw came up with three. Freshman Joseph Swift dished out eight assists on the night in addition to five points and four rebounds of his own.

Garris Holloman recorded his second career double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds for B-CU. CJ Reed also contributed 15 points for the Wildcats.

Big 2nd Half Carries Spartans Past Howard, 63-53

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Rob Hampton led all players with 23 points, 18 in Norfolk State's big second half, and added six rebounds to help the Spartans claim a 63-53 victory over Howard in an EPNU televised game on Monday night at Burr Gymnasium.

Hampton was 6-of-9 from the floor, 3-of-5 from 3-point range and a perfect 8-of-8 from the foul line to help the Spartans (3-13, 2-3 MEAC) win for the second time in their last three games. Chris McEachin added 11 points for NSU, which matched its season high by making nine 3-point field goals.

Mike Phillips and Dadrian Collins had 11 points apiece for Howard (2-15, 0-5), which lost its seventh straight game. The Bison shot just 32.7 percent from the floor (17-of-52), a season low by an NSU opponent.

Rodney McCauley added eight points, all coming in the first half, including a pair of 3-pointers that helped stake NSU to the early edge. Kyle O'Quinn was limited to five points, but snared a game-high 10 rebounds and blocked four shots. Pauline had eight assists and Tim Zephyr chipped in with seven points, four rebounds and four assists.
