Hamilton Leads Hampton Past Lady Aggies

Hampton, Va. Hampton had little trouble against rival North Carolina A&T on Monday night, cruising past the Lady Aggies 71-36 at the HU Convocation Center.

With the win, Hampton’s fourth in a row, the Lady Pirates established a season-low for points allowed and recorded the largest margin of victory so far this season. It was also Hampton’s second straight win over the Lady Aggies.

Freshman guard Nicole Hamilton  led the Lady Pirates with a career-high 23 points–18 of which came in the first half –while junior guard Jericka Jenkins added nine points and a team-high eight assists.

Senior forward Quanneisha Perry pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds to go along with eight points.

Hampton (12-5, 5-0 MEAC) opened the second half on a 21-6 run, taking a 62-22 lead with 4:14 to play after a breakaway layup by freshman guard Chikilra Goodman. The Lady Pirates, already up by 25 at the half, used their stingy defense to hold the Lady Aggies to just 25.0 percent shooting (14-for-56).

North Carolina A&T (6-9, 3-2 MEAC) made just one of its 11 3-point attempts and turned the ball over 20 times.

The Lady Pirates shot 49.1 percent (28-for-57) from the floor, while also out-rebounding North Carolina A&T 46-36. Hampton recorded 10 steals, compared to just six for the Lady Aggies.

UMES Downs Bethune-Cookman, 69-52, For Third Win in Last Four

Princess Anne, Md. - Casey Morton tied her career high with 24 points on 7-for-13 shooting  to lead three players in double figures as the Maryland Eastern Shore rolled to a 69-52 win over Bethune-Cookman at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center Monday.

Morton added four rebounds, four steals and three assists to help UMES (5-11, 2-2 MEAC) to its third win in four games. B-CU, which received 17 points from Jasmine Elum and 16 from Jasmine Daniels, fell to 8-8 overall and 2-3 in the conference with the loss.

The win marked the first two-game sweep of Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman since the 2008-09 season when the Lady Hawks defeated FAMU (45-38) and B-CU (72-65) in succession on Feb. 21-23, 2009 in the Sunshine State.

It is also the second time this season Morton has tied her career high. The senior also had 24 points in a 64-60 loss to American at the Hytche Center on Jan. 2. Kwinnyata Mercer and Chelsea Sanders  recorded 11 points apiece. Both Morton and Mercer were a 3-for-3 from 3-point range and UMES finished 7-of-10 from distance.

A choppy game, it featured a combined 51 personal fouls, four technical fouls and 40 turnovers.

Lady Rattlers Rally to a 66-56 Win Over Delaware State

Dover, Del. - Florida A&M (FAMU) scored 43-second half points in route to 66-56 win over Delaware State Monday evening at Memorial Hall.

FAMU (7-9, 3-2 MEAC) had three Lady Rattlers to finish in double-figures as Tameka McKelton scored a game high 19 points to lead all scorers.  Antonia Bennett finished with a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, Jasmine Grice scored 16 points from off the bench.

DSU (5-11, 1-3 MEAC) was paced by Brittany Washington with 14 points, followed by Kianna Conner with 11.  Kianna D’Oliveira rounded out the cast of Lady Hornets that scored in double-figures with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Eagles Run Win Streak to Three Straight with Victory Over South Carolina State

Baltimore-Junior Jeanine Manley scored a season-high 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds leading Coppin State to an 84-51 victory over South Carolina State in a MEAC game in the Physical Education Complex.

Manley was 8-of-10 from the floor and made 8-of-9 free throws to lead the Eagles to their third consecutive victory.

Coppin State (5-10, 2-2 MEAC) shot 54.4 percent from the floor and dominated the paint outscoring the Bulldogs 42-22. The Eagles shot 58.3 percent in the second half, while limiting South Carolina State to 31.0 percent shooting for the game.

The Eagles also received 17 points and eight rebounds from Crystal Whittington and 14 points and nine rebounds from Shawntae Payne.

South Carolina State (6-8, 2-2 MEAC) was led by Whitney Wiley who scored 13 points.

Howard Drops NSU in Conference Road Tilt, 65-43

Washington, D.C. – A pair of strong scoring efforts by Saadia Doyle and Tamoria Holmes and poor shooting by the Spartans gave Howard a 65-43 win over the Norfolk State Monday evening at Burr Gymnasium.

Holmes scored a career-high 22 and Doyle added 17 points, including 13 in the second half as Howard improved to 5-13 overall and 2-3 in the MEAC with the win. Sophomore Batavia Owens posted a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds, with eight offensive boards, as NSU fell to 6-8 overall, 0-5 in conference play.

The story of the game, though, was NSU’s 21.7 percent shooting clip for the game. The Spartans connected on just 13-of-60 from the floor, including 2-of-16 from 3-point land. Owens had five of those 13 baskets.

NSU got the better of Howard on the boards, 42-33. The Spartans tallied 23 offensive boards, which led to a 21-7 edge in second chance points over the Bison. NSU was on fire from the free throw line early on in the game, hitting 12 of its first 13 before eventually cooling off and hitting 15-of-23 overall.

Cheyenne Curley-Payne posted 13 points with eight assists, six rebounds and two steals for Howard, which shot 48.9 percent for the evening. The Bison also connected on 4-of-9 from 3-point range and 15-of-21 (71.4 percent) from the charity stripe.
