UMES Hangs On to Top Florida A&M, 64-62

PRINCESS ANNE, Md.Florida A&M’s Antonia Bennett drove the lane and missed a layup with one second on the clock as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore women’s basketball team dodged a second-half comeback by the Lady Rattlers, holding on for a 64-62 win in its MEAC home opener at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center Saturday.

Kwinnyata Mercer and Chelsea Sanders  had 15 points apiece to help stave off the charge. The win, the Lady Hawks’ second in three games, moves them to 4-11 overall and 1-2 in the MEAC while FAMU falls to 6-9 and 2-2 on the season with the loss. Mercer was 6-for-13 from the floor and added a team-high eight rebounds. Sanders went 6-of-10 in her first game back after a five-game absence from the lineup.

Howard Snap Skid with 69-53 win over N.C. A&T

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Howard University women’s basketball team snapped its seven-game skid with a convincing 69-53 win over North Carolina A&T (6-8, 3-1 MEAC) at Burr Gymnasium on Sat. Jan. 15. HU improves to 4-13 on the year and captured its first conference win by scoring a season-high 69 points.

For the game, the Lady Bison shot 43.1 percent from the floor (25-for-58). “I think we had a great effort from Cheyenne and Saadia,” commented Geckeler. Doyle tallied her eighth double-double of the year with a game-highs of 29 points and 15 boards. Curley-Payne finished with a career-high 21 points and dished out six assists. Adelle Walton chipped in with nine points.

The Lady Bison scored 27 points off 22 Aggies miscues. HU also held a 41-35 lead on the glass over N.C. A&T.

Hampton Holds Off NSU, 75-54, in Battle of the Bay

HAMPTON, Va. – The Norfolk State women’s basketball team could not overcome a big second half run that allowed league-leading Hampton to defeat the Spartans, 75-54, Saturday afternoon at the HU Convocation Center.

Junior Sarah Daily and sophomore Marian Brooks each tallied 12 points in the basketball version of the Battle of the Bay. Freshman Rachel Gordon also had a team-high eight rebounds to go along with 10 points for NSU (6-7, 0-4 MEAC).

Nicole Hamilton was one of four players in double figures for the Pirates with a game-high 16 points, while Melanie Warner posted 15. Quanneisha Perry had a double-double for Hampton (11-5, 4-0) with 10 points and 11 rebounds before leaving in the second half due to apparent cramps.

NSU shot well, hitting 42.1 percent for the game on 24-of-57 shooting, including better than 40 percent in both halves. The Pirates connected on 28-of-58 (48.3 percent) on the afternoon with a 5-of-16 effort from beyond the arc. The Spartans attempted just three 3-pointers and missed on all three attempts.

Both teams also struggled from the free throw line, with NSU shooting just 6-of-15, while Hampton was 14-of-28. The Pirates also owned a 41-34 edge on the boards.

Eagles Post Second Striaght Victory

BALTIMORE, MD -- Jeanine Manley scored 19 points and Crystal Whittington had 15 points and nine rebounds leading Coppin State to a 59-47 non-conference victory over North Carolina Central on Saturday in the Physical Education Complex.

Coppin State notched its second straight victory on the strength of limiting North Carolina Central to just 33.3 percent shooting from the floor and forcing the Eagles into 27 turnovers.

Coppin State (4-10) scored 26 points off of those turnovers and outscored NCCU 44-20 in the paint.

The Eagles took a 36-20 lead at halftime behind a 51.5 percent shooting effort in the first half and 11 points each from Manley and Whittington.

Manley scored inside with 4:03 to play in the first half which gave Coppin State a 21-20 lead and ignited a 17-0 run to close the first half.

Noel and Smith lead Lady Bears to 61-54 win over Lady Bulldogs

BALTIMORE, Md. - Brittany Noel fell shy of a double-double, finishing with a team-high 14 points and pulling down a team-high nine rebounds, while Jamesia Smith came off the bench and added 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting to lead Morgan State to a 61-54 MEAC victory over South Carolina State on Saturday afternoon at Hill Field House.

The Lady Bears improved to 8-7 on the season, 3-1 in the MEAC, while South Carolina State dropped its first conference game, falling 6-7 overall and 2-1 in the MEAC.

Morgan State nearly blew a 19-point second half lead, as the visiting Lady Bulldogs evened the score at 50 all with a three-pointer by Whitney Wiley with 2:35 to play. The Lady Bears, who shot 77 percent (14-of-18) from the free throw line, closed out the game with an 11-4 run, including 5-for-7 from the line.

The Lady Bears took a 35-16 lead after two free throws by Dodson with 18:20 left in the game. The guests used a 10-0 run to cut the Morgan State lead down to 40-34 and then went on an 11-4 spurt to pull within 46-45 after a basket by Goodwin with 4:06 to play. Wiley's three-pointer to even the score at 50 apiece, would be as close as South Carolina State would get.

Bethune-Cookman Defeats Delaware State, 64-56

Delaware State fell to 1-2 in the MEAC after a 64-56 loss to Bethune-Cookman in Memorial Hall Saturday evening.

The Lady Hornets dropped their second straight game to fall to 5-10 on the season. The Wildcats improved to 8-7.

Jasmine Daniels led the Wildcats with a game-high 19 points, while Jasmine Elum added 13.

Freshman Kianna Conner was high scorer for Delaware State with 17 points, while senior Ashley Thompson had 11.
