SC State Women Capture 3rd Straight Win

ORANGEBURG, SC - Center  Fannie Goodwin tossed in 10 points and grabbed an equal number of rebounds Monday to lead South Carolina State to a 47-35 victory over visiting Delaware State in a MEAC contest at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.

Goodwin, playing in only her fourth contest, was the only player in double figures for the Lady Bulldogs who won for the third straight time to improve to 6-6 overall and 2-0 in the MEAC. Guards Trinese Fox and Whitney Wiley added eight points each in the victory.

No player reached double digits in the contest for the Lady Hornets who were paced by Deanna Harmon and Tasia Bristow with nine points each. Brittany Washington had 10 rebounds to spearhead Delaware State on the boards.

The two teams combined for only 33 first-half points as the host Lady Bulldogs led 18-15 at the break in the low-scoring affair.

Lady Pirates Blow Out Morgan State

BALTIMORE, Md. -Hampton cruised to its second straight win Monday night, defeating Morgan State 68-37 at the Hill Field House.

This was Hampton's largest margin of victory on the season.

Freshman Nicole Hamilton, the MEAC Rookie of the Week, led the Lady Pirates with 17 points on 7-for-15 shooting, while junior guard Choicetta McMillian poured in 16 points. Junior forward Melanie Warner added 14 points and seven rebounds.

Senior forward Quanneisha Perry pulled down a team-high 15 rebounds, while junior guard Jericka Jenkins dished out 11 assists.

The Lady Pirates (10-5, 3-0 MEAC) shot 39.7 percent (23-for-58) from the floor, while also holding a sizeable 51-30 rebounding edge over the Bears. Hampton forced Morgan State into 14 turnovers, turning them into 17 points.

Morgan State (7-7, 2-1 MEAC) shot just 29.4 percent (15-for-51) from the floor, making just four of 21 3-point attempts. The Bears also went just 3-for-11 from the free throw line. It was the second-lowest shooting percentage Hampton has allowed this season, and the Bears' 37 points are a season low for points allowed by the Lady Pirates.

Brittany Dodson led Morgan State with 12 points.

Comeback Falls Short; Lady Bison Drop Seventh Straight

 BALTIMORE-Howard finished its weekend MEAC slate with a 48-39 loss at Coppin State on Mon. Jan. 10.

Cheyenne Curley-Payne paced the Lady Bison with 14 points - including 11 in the second half. Tomoria Holmes tallied 10 points for her second-straight double-digit scoring game.

In the second stint, Howard was trailing 36-22 midway through half. Highlighted by a Curley-Payne three-pointer, the Lady Bison rattled off 14 unanswered in a three-plus span to tie it at 36 all at the 7:23 mark.

The Lady Eagles answered three minutes later by going on a 9-0 run to push the spread to 45-36 with just over a minute left in regulation. HU was unable to recover from the deficit, however.

For Coppin State, Crystal Whittington finished with a team-high 13 points off the bench. Jeanine Manley tallied 11 points - including eight in the last 20 minutes of play.

Spartans Come Up Short Against FAMU, 81-72

NORFOLK, Va. -Norfolk State could not find the late game magic for the second contest in a row, as Florida A&M defeated the Spartans, 81-72, Monday evening at Joseph Echols Hall.

Despite a career-high 23 points from junior Sarah Daily, NSU (6-6, 0-3 MEAC) was not able to get any closer than 72-70 as the game waned into the last few minutes of play. Florida A&M (6-8, 2-1 MEAC) got another solid night from the MEAC's leading scorer, Tameka McKelton, who tallied 25 points.

Along with Daily's night, junior Whitney Long and freshman Rae Corbo reached double digits with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Sophomore Recca Trice had a solid game with seven assists and four steals, while sophomore Marian Brooks grabbed nine rebounds.

Jasmine Grice added 13 points for the Rattlers, and Antonia Bennett posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Qiana Donald led all players with 11 rebounds.

The Rattlers also had a 38-35 edge in rebounds, and despite committing one less turnover than the Spartans, FAMU led NSU in points off turnovers, 26-17.

UMES Escapes North Carolina Central With 48-47 Win

DURHAM, N.C. - Maryland Eastern Shore broke its seven-game winless streak, topping North Carolina Central, 48-47, at McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium on Monday.

Down by one with five seconds left, a runner by NCCU's Blair Houston drew iron and UMES (3-10) escaped with the win, its first in 12 games out of league play on the road, dating back to Jan. 21, 2009 at Longwood.

Chena Parker led the way for UMES with 10 points and nine rebounds and Kwinnyata Mercer also tallied 10 points and seven rebounds.

Jori Nwachukwu paced NCCU (2-13) with a double-double of 17 points and 14 rebounds in the loss.

NCCU shot 33.3 percent (16-for-48) for the game and UMES went 29.2 percent 21-of-72) from the floor in the game. UMES had eight less turnovers (29-21) and its bench outscored the Lady Eagles, 25-5.

UMES also won the battled of the boards, 50-46.

Mercer and Cook (seven points) added five steals each for UMES. Williams and Pollock chipped in with 12 and 10 points, respectively for NCCU.

Lady Aggies Defeat Lady Wildcats

GREENSBORO - Jaleesa Sams scored 17 points and had seven rebounds as North Carolina A&T defeated Bethune-Cookman 69-50 in women's basketball action at Corbett Sports Center on Monday.

Freshman Mikala Scott added 13 points for the Aggies who improved to 6-7 overall and 3-0 in the MEAC. The Aggies won their 27th straight game at home against a conference opponent, a streak that is  four years old.

The Wildcats went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to nine at 55-46. The Aggies returned the favor by going on an 11-2 run that included three fastbreak layups.
