Lady Pirates Win UMES Lid-Lifter
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -Hampton women's cross country team opened the 2010 season Saturday morning by winning the Maryland Eastern Shore Lid-Lifter Invitational at the UMES Driving Range and Cross Country Course.
The Lady Pirates finished the meet with 22 points, 20 points fewer than second-place Norfolk State. The men's cross country team finished fourth with 93 points. The U.S. Naval Academy tallied 28 points to win the men's team title.
Senior Jasmin Branch finished second overall after completing the 5K course in 19:44.32. Freshman Nichelle Harris ran a 20:11.49 to finish third, while sophomore Teshika Rivers came in fourth after running a 20:24.00.
A 20:32.69 from freshman Devyn Thompson helped her finish sixth, while sophomore Shaquanda Gainey came in seventh with a 20:51.28. Freshman Cydney Robinson ran a 21:14.61 to finish ninth.

Hawks Wrap Up Lid-Lifter With Third Place Finishes
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Maryland Eastern Shore men's and women's cross country teams kicked off the 2010 season with third place finishes as they hosted the Lid-Lifter Invitational Saturday at the UMES Cross Country Course/Golf Driving Range.
On the men's side, the Hawks scored 87 points and were led by sophomore Basil Melek. Melek finished 10th overall with a time of 26:12.44.
Norfolk State's Vincent Ruto finished first overall with a time of 25:30.19 while Navy won the event as a team with 28 points.
Senior Amon Kiprotich was the next finisher for the Hawks with a 28:19.94, which was good for 25th place. Fellow senior Peter Sang finished 30th overall with a time of 28:52.80 while junior Shadrack Maritim was 31st with a time of 28:55.19.
Junior Jermol Dix, freshman Alonzo Jarmon and senior Thomas Keane-Dawes rounded out the meet with respective times of 37:46.02, 38:00.12 and 39:26.73.
In the women's race, junior Cynthia Anais finished eighth overall with a time of 20:56.72. The Lady Hawks scored a total of 64 points on the day.
Norfolk State's Kellen Rutto took home the gold medal with her finish of 19:31.75. Hampton
University won the women's race with a total of 22 points.

NSU Takes Pair of Individual Titles at UMES Lid-Lifter XC Opener
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Norfolk State's Vincent Rono and Kellen Rutto won their respective individual titles as the Spartan men and women earned second-place finishes at their season-opening event, the Maryland Eastern Shore Lid-Lifter on Saturday morning.
Rono finished the 8,000-meter course in 25 minutes, 30.19 seconds. He was one of three Spartan men to finish in the top four as NSU amassed 33 points, second only to Navy's 28. Host UMES placed third with 87 points, and Hampton was fourth with 93.
Rounding out the top five for the Spartans was junior Josef Tessema in 11th place (26:14.31) and sophomore Kameron George in 24th (28:04.50).
On the women's side, Rutto finished first in 19:31.75 to take the individual crown to lead four NSU women placing in the top 11. Jennifer Chichester was fifth in 20:27.86, Syeeda Gee was 10th in 21:33.87 and Mercy Koech was 11th in 21:51.73.

TWO RATTLERS FINISH IN THE TOP TEN AT TROY INVITATIONAL
TROY, Ala. (Sept. 4) - Shuaib Winter finished second, while Lamere Buchanan finished eight as the Florida A&M University Cross Country Team finished fourth in the Troy University Invitational, held Saturday morning at the Troy Oaks Golf Course.
Winters finished the meet with a time of 16:04.50 scoring two points, while Buchanan ran a time of 17:02.68 scoring eight points.

LADY RATTLERS HAS THREE TO FINISH IN THE TOP 15 AT TROY
TROY, Ala.- The Florida A&M University Women's Cross Country Team participated in the Troy University Invitational, this past weekend at the Troy Oaks Golf Course.
The Lady Rattlers tallied 84 points for a fourth place finish in the invitational.
FAMU had three Lady Rattlers to finish in the top 15 as Chandelic Jackson led the way with a time of 12:57.68 for a 11th place finish. Rounding out the cast of top 15 performers for FAMU is Shanay Mayes and Clarricia Golden. Mayes finished 14th with a time of 13:02.93, while Golden grabbed 15th place with a time of 13:04.84.
