MEAC Volleyball Recap: Sept. 1

Eagles Swept 3-0 By Powerful Spartans 

DURHAM, N.C. - The powerful attack of the Spartans proved to be too much for the North Carolina Central Eagles to stop as North Carolina at Greensboro hammered a .303 clip to overpower NCCU, 3-0, in volleyball action Wednesday night at McDougald-McLendon Gym.

The Spartans continued their winning streak, extending their record to a perfect 5-0 on the season as they defeated the Eagles by scores of 25-17, 25-16 and 25-11. NCCU dropped to 1-5 on the season as they struggled against a powerful Spartan defense that forced 21 Eagle errors and allowed just two service aces.

Senior outside hitter Belinda Behncke-Biney led the Eagles' offensive efforts with a team-high five kills and added seven digs on the defensive end. Junior transfer Emanuelle Santos made her NCCU debut, totaling four kills, while junior Sashalee Wallen collected four digs and added a block to her stat line.

Contributing to the Eagle offense was freshman setter Jzima-Malaki Kalao, who totaled 15 assists and had one of the Eagles' two service aces. She contributed a .333 to the Eagles' offensive game, being one of two NCCU student-athletes to hit above .300 in the match. Alexis John also hit above .300 with a .333 on the day.

American Trips Up Coppin State 3-0

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Ashley Saunders had five kills and Alexandria Malesick and Christina Epps each had four kills, but Coppin State dropped a 25-8, 25-7, 25-17 decision to American in non-conference play on Wednesday at Bender Arena.

Angelina Waterman had 10 kills and Katerina Cinkova posted a .778 hitting percentage to lead American to its third victory in four matches this season. The Eagles hit .359 as a team, while limiting Coppin State to a .011 attack percentage.

Yolanda Reid had three kills and Vanity Massey added two kills as Coppin State dropped its fourth consecutive match to open the season.

 Saunders had a team-high 10 digs and Haley Beechler had 15 assists from her setting position.

Tigers Fall at Home to Wofford

Wofford's Melissa Kearse had game highs of eight kills and eight digs, while Tara Gough dominated with 18 assists, leading them to defeat the Lady Tigers 11-25, 09-25, 07-25.

SSU's Bryana Gadis continued to play strong as she also earned a game high of eight digs and led the team in kills with seven. Setter, Ashlee Butler made 10 assists and freshman Asiha Williams added seven digs to the Tigers defensive force.

Howard Tops Lafayette for First Win of the Season

Howard (1-3) earned its first victory of the season with a 3-1 win over Lafayette.

Tosin Elebute (14 kills) and Taylor Johnson (11) led the Howard offense, while Jiyana Brown landed a match-best six service aces. In total, the teams combined for 18 aces, with the Bison recording 11 aces.
