Volleyball Recap: Sept. 18

FAMU Falls To Georgia Tech, 3-0

CLEMSON, S.C. (Sept 18)  - In their second game of the Clemson University Invitational, Florida A&M dropped a, 3-0 (18-25,18-25, 10-25) to Georgia Tech, Saturday afternoon at Jervey Gymnasium.

FAMU (0-9) was led by both Katherine Huanec and Maria Ceccarelli with seven kills each, followed by Lorin Rucker with six.  Daina Gonzalez led the team in assists with 25, while Susan Egoavil finished with a team high 13 digs.

GT(6-5) was paced by Monique Mead with 12 kills, followed by both Bailey Hunter and Alexis Woodson with seven kills each.  Jurdan McCuller finished with a team high 13 digs, whereas Mary Tippins finished with a game high 33 assists.

Hawks Fall To Hartford In Five At Navy
 
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Four players tallied double-digit kills as freshman Kaveingna Lea'Aetoa had a match-high 17 and junior Zoe Bowens chipped in with 16 but it wasn't enough for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team which fell, 3-2 (14-25, 25-15, 25-16, 23-25, 15-13), at the Kristin Dickmann Memorial Tournament at Navy's Wesley A. Brown Field House Saturday.
Hartford improves to 5-9 with the win and is 2-0 in the tournament after defeating Navy in five games Friday. The loss for UMES (4-8) snaps a three-match win streak and is its fifth in six five-setters this season.

Sophomore Stephanie Sierra had a career-high 47 assists in leading the UMES offense. Freshman Jingquiao Li tied for the match high with 12 digs. Lea'Aetoa led the UMES block with five total blocks (three solo) as the Hawks outblocked Hartford, 8-6.

EAGLES SNAP LOSING SKID WITH 3-2 WIN OVER THE CITADEL

Three Eagles put on career performances as they defeat the Bulldogs in five

ORANGEBURG, S.C. - Three North Carolina Central University (2-12) student-athletes put on career performances in volleyball action Saturday evening to put a sweet finish on the South Carolina State Spikefest as the Eagles snapped their eight-match losing skid with a 3-2 victory over The Citadel Bulldogs (5-10), rebounding from a 3-0 defeat earlier in the day in a non-conference match against Hampton (1-14).

  

The Eagles used their power defense to lay the hammer on The Citadel. Even when they were down two sets to one, NCCU never gave up. They pushed through and relied on their defensive strengths to rally back as they defeated The Citadel by scores of 25-20, 18-25, 13-25, 25-23 and 15-10. NCCU had nine blocks on the match.

NCCU improved to 2-12 on the year following a 1-3 mark in this weekend's action. They snapped an eight-match losing streak and continued their fight as they refused to let down their guard throughout the tournament. The Citadel dropped to 5-10 on the year, while Hampton earned their first win and improved to 1-14 on the season.

Senior outside hitter Belinda Behncke-Biney paced the Eagle offense throughout the weekend and didn't stop in the final game of the tournament. The Hamburg, Germany, native notched double-figure kills in all four matches, topping the weekend off with a career-high 21 kills against the Bulldogs. She also added 15 digs for her second double-double of the year. She finished the weekend with 52 kills, five service aces, 26 digs and seven blocks.

Maritsann Sinclair, who has been quiet most of the year, stepped up to the challenge and notched her first career double-double with a career-high 17 kills and 15 digs. She also added three blocks on the defensive end. Sinclair and Behncke-Biney combined for 38 of NCCU's 57 kills and 30 of the Eagles' 61 digs.

The Eagle defense got help from junior Raven King, who collected a match-high 20 digs, just five shy of her career high. On the net, where the Eagles remain consistent day in and day out, Kalin Russell and Alexis John recorded four blocks apiece to contribute to the pesty Eagle blocking game.

Freshman setter Jzima-Malaki Kalao earned her second career All-Tournament Team selection after an outstanding offensive performance for the Eagles. She capped the weekend off with a season-high 45 assists against The Citadel. The Bubendorf, Switzerland, native totaled 122 assists over the two-day weekend.

  

Earlier in the day, the Eagles faced-off with the Hampton Pirates, struggling to find a rhythm as they kept each set close, but were unable to deliver as they fell by scores of 25-23, 26-24 and 26-24. The Pirates earned their first win of the season as they battled their conference foe in the Eagles.

Behncke-Biney recorded 10 kills, while Emanuelle Santos added eight kills and two service aces to pace the Eagle offense. Kalao contributed to the Eagle offense with 26 assists and two service aces. On the defensive end, NCCU was anchored by King with 11 digs and Sashalee Wallen with a career-high seven blocks.

Hampton was led by Aaryn Harrison with 10 blocks, followed by Lina Cordoba with seven. Contributing to the offense was Juliana Chavez with 24 assists. On the defensive end, Ivana Suput paced the Pirates with 11 digs, while Mariah Baylor added four blocks. Cordoba and Chavez combined for six blocks.

HORNETS PERFECT AT LAFAYETTE TOURNAMENT

Dover, Del. (Sep. 18, 2010) --- Delaware State posted a 3-0 record at the Lafayette College Volleyball Invitational after wins over La Salle and Lafayette today.

The Hornets were 3-0 winners over La Salle in their first match of the day. The scores were 25-20, 25-22 and 25-15. Delaware State's Elisa Hermann led all players with 10 kills, while Erica Tajchman and Sarah Wheatcroft topped the Hornets with 10 digs each. DSU's Martina Ferrari had a game-high 29 assists.

In the Lafayette match, Delaware State dropped the first game 25-21. The Hornets bounced back to win the next three games 25-12, 25-17 and 25-23.

Hermann recorded a "double-double" in the match, collecting 11 kills and 12 digs. Wheatcroft topped the Hornets with 13 kills, while Sonja Banicevic led all players with 27 digs.

Delaware State dominated the individual statistics during the tournament. Hermann led all tournament players with 38 kills (3.17 pg), while Tajchman was the tourney leader with a .269 hitting percentage (26 kills/67 attempts). Ferrari was the leader in assists (9.08 pg), while, Banicevic averaged 5.42 digs per game to lead all tournament players.

The Hornets have won their last three matches to improve to 5-8 this season.

Hawks Edge Navy, 3-2 In Kristin Dickmann Tournament Finale

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Junior Zoe Bowens registered a match-high 18 kills and freshman Maline Vaitai tallied her second double-double of the season as the Maryland Eastern Shore outlasted Kristin Dickmann Memorial Tournament host Navy, 3-2 (25-21, 25-18, 22-25, 20-25, 15-7) at Wesley A. Brown Field House Saturday.

The win moved the UMES record in the tournament to 2-1 and pushed its overall mark to 5-8. The win is also the Hawks' fourth in the all-time series against the Midshipmen and second in five-set matches. Navy fell to 4-10 in the losing effort.

Lea'Aetoa and Chukwura grabbed the Hawks two all-tournament team honors. The freshman from Salt Lake City, Utah, finished the weekend with a .315 hitting percentage, 3.31 kills per game and 1.08 blocks per game. Chukwura, a redshirt senior Brooklyn, N.Y. native, countered with a .368 efficiency and 2.31 kills per game.

Against Navy, UMES hit .215 (67 kills, 33 errors, 158 total attacks) to the Midshipmen's .169 (43-21-130).

Lea'Aetoa and Chukwura finshed the match with 16 and 13 kills, respectively, while Vaitai had 17 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore Stepahnie Sierra collected her third double-double of the year and second of the tournament with 58 assists and match-high-tying 13 digs.

Spartans Can't Hold Early Lead, Fall to UNCG, 3-1

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Despite nearly taking a 2-0 lead, the Norfolk State volleyball team was unable to hold down UNC Greensboro in a 3-1 loss Saturday morning to the host team in the Spartan Spiketacular at Fleming Gymnasium.

The loss dropped NSU to 4-9 on the season, while UNCG improved to 11-3.

Sophomore Ellica Morris again led the Spartans on offense with a match-high 15 kills and eight digs, a day after breaking her previous career high with 21 kills against Gardner-Webb on Friday. Sophomore Charlotte Armstead also reached double digits in kills with 11, while freshman Arielle Knafel and redshirt sophomore Paige Gary-Canty each tallied 13 digs.

Junior Nicole Kessner posted 28 assists as NSU hit just .125 for the match compared to a .283 clip for the host UNCG Spartans. UNCG also had a sizeable edge in blocks, 12-1, and had more digs (57-54) and service aces (8-5).

Ariel Newman and Caley Redden each had 13 kills to lead UNCG, while Newman and Kellie Orewiler had 12 digs each. Olivia Humphries added nine kills and a match-high five blocks.


Spartans Overpower Morgan State, 3-0

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Norfolk State volleyball team rebounded from a tough loss earlier in the day as the Spartans downed Morgan State, 3-0, in a non-conference match on Saturday afternoon in the UNC Greensboro Spiketacular at Fleming Gymnasium.

The win improved NSU's record to 5-9 on the year, while Morgan State dropped to 2-12.

Sophomore Charlotte Armstead totaled a match-high nine kills and had three blocks, as did junior Jasmine Frazier, who also added seven kills to the team effort. Freshman Noelle Eagles posted 10 digs, and junior Nicole Kessner had 17 assists.

Dominique Bozier led the Bears with eight kills and three blocks, while Dina Beamon had a match-high 14 digs. Ngebui Chafeh added 14 assists.

Morgan State helped out NSU's cause with 22 attack errors and eight service errors, as the Bears hit .022 for the match. NSU attacked at a .172 clip and also held an advantage in blocks (6-3), digs (41-31), kills (33-24) and service aces (9-4).

Sophomore Ellica Morris was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 3.73 kills and 2.27 digs per set, including a career-high 21 kills in the 3-1 win over Gardner-Webb Friday.
