Anais And Melek Take Silver At UMES Cappy Anderson Invite

Maryland Eastern Shore men's and women's cross country teams hosted their second meet of the season Saturday morning with the Cappy Anderson Invitational and finished second and fourth, respectively, in their races.

The men's squad continues to be led by sophomore Basil Melek, who finished second overall with a time of 25:43.76.  As a team, the Hawks scored 88 points, second only to St. Francis University (Pa.), who nearly swept the top ten with eight spots and received 19 points on the day.

Senior Amon Kiprotich finished the day in 12th place with a time of 26:41.80.  Junior Shadrack Maritim came in 16th place in 27:05.30 while senior Peter Sang ran a 27:49.85, good for 20th place.

St. Francis junior Chris Mills took the gold medal in the men's race with a course record time of 24:52.70.  Norfolk State's David Kemboi set the previous record of 24:59.96 on Sept. 3, 2005.

The Lady Hawks finished fourth for Division I schools with a point total of 122.  The St. Francis women's team also took home the gold with 32 points.

Junior Cynthia Anais continues her success for the women's team as she finished the day with a time of 18:45.59, which was good for second place overall.

Senior Eunice Jones crossed in 17th place with a time of 20:08.41. Sophomore Emilie Ducados ran a time of 20:31.97, which was good for 25th place, while senior Jessica Abrantes came in 33rd place with a time of 21:07.82.
