Volleyball Recap: Sept. 14

Mercer Downs Lady Rattlers, 3-0

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Sept. 14- Mercer extended the Florida A&M's losing streak as the Lady Bears defeated the Lady Rattlers, 3-0 (22-25,19-25,14-25), Tuesday evening at the Alfred Lawson, Jr., Multipurpose Center and Teaching Gymnasium.

FAMU (0-7) was led by Katherine Huanec with 10 kills, followed by Maria Ceccarelli with seven.  Diana Gonzalez led the Lady Rattlers in assists with a game high 25 assists.

In the first set, the Lady Rattlers jumped out to a 13-5 lead, capped off by a Mercer error.

The Lady Bears would then knot the score at 18-18 apiece as they out scored the Lady Rattlers 13-5, capped off by a FAMU attack error.

Mercer would then tie the score at 20-20 on an FAMU attack error.  The Lady Bears would then rattle off three points on a Charlotte Harris kill, followed by a FAMU attack error and a Bridget Sheerin service ace, giving the Lady Bears a 23-21 lead.

A Krista Hurley kill would give the Lady Bears a 25-22, to win the first set.

FAMU would then drop the second and third as Mercer won the second set 25-19 and the third set 25-14.

Erica Vrvilo was the only Lady Bear to finish in double-digit kills with 12, followed by Libby Hansch with nine.  Bridget Sheerin led Mercer in assists with 25, whereas Charlotte Harris finished with a game high 20 digs.

Mercer (3-10) finished with a total of 44 kills, whereas FAMU only tallied 31.

Eagle Volleyball Falls In Three To Davidson

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Junior middle hitter Sashalee Wallen notched seven kills and collected three blocks for North Carolina Central (1-9) Tuesday night, but it wasn't enough to stop the scrappy Wildcats of Davidson College (6-4) as they swept the Eagles, 3-0, in their home-opener at Belk Arena.

Wallen hit a .545 with just one error on 11 attempts to pace the Eagle offense, while Kalin Russell added four kills on 10 attempts and two blocks. Jzima-Malaki Kalao finished with 13 assists and Raven King paced the NCCU defense with 10 digs. Assisting on the defensive effort was Alexis John with eight digs and two blocks.

Davidson hit .268 on the match with just 13 errors, using a 35-kill performance to sweep the Eagles by scores of 25-18, 25-12 and 25-17, improving their record to 6-4 on the season. NCCU totaled 16 kills and 17 errors on 67 attempts in the loss, dropping to 1-9 on the season. The Eagles extend their losing streak to five.

The Wildcats' Erin Lupfer and Sarabeth Peele each recorded nine kills to pace the Davidson offense. Peele also contributed on defense with four blocks, while a quartet of Wildcats combined for 12 blocks as Hayley Lawson, Madison Benedict, Jorden Benedict and Lupfer each collected three.
